Asteroid 1582, Martir, was discovered on June 15, 1950 by Miguel Itzigsohn at La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Martir has a period of 5 years, 219 days and is about 27 ½ miles in diameter.
Martir means "martyr" in Spanish; like Abanderada and Descamisada, Martir's name honors Eva Perón (1919-1952), the first wife of legendary Argentinian president Juan Domingo Perón.

Cassie Bernall
Cassie Bernall, one of the 12 students killed by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold in the Columbine High massacre in 1999, has been widely, persistently and willfully misrepresented by the Religious Right as being killed by Klebold for her evangelical Christian beliefs in a story too well-known (and too egregious a falsehood) to repeat. It was based on initial eyewitness accounts by terrified people in an emergency situation whose lives hung on the whims of two armed lunatics and did not stand up to scrutiny, but it suits the self-pity, paranoia, delusions of persecution and dreams of hegemony of the Christian Right. Cassie had Martir conjunct 1999 DE9 (lust for power), square 2002 VQ94 (to be exceptional, to shatter), trine 2002 VE95 (qualified benefit), and quincunx Neptune (lies, delusions) and Damocles (pushing the envelope).
David Koresh and his followers in the Branch Davidian sect burned themselves up in the Mount Carmel compound near Waco in 1993, after a siege by law enforcement following a failed raid in which several ATF agents—peace officers, it should be noted carefully—who were attempting to arrest the Branch Davidians on illegal-firearms charges were ambushed and shot dead. There were allegations that children were sexually abused by Koresh, who turned the sect into something twisted and cultlike, reserving all sexual favors for himself. Yet some persist in believing, and spreading the story, that Koresh and the rest of the Branch Davidians who slaughtered themselves and one another, including their innocent children, in a way they took pains to make as grand a spectacle as possible were innocent Christian believers slaughtered by the government for their religious beliefs. Timothy McVeigh has said he was motivated (in part) to commit the bombing massacre that got him executed by this incident. Koresh had Martir in the tenth house, cusping the eleventh, sextile the Ascendant (personal matters), square Pandora (making a splash, having an impact, unintended consequences, gifts), quincunx Saturn (work) and opposite Chariklo (to popularize or glamorize).
Mohammed Atta, the ringleader of the 9-11 attacks, believed he would go to Heaven as a warrior for Islam by doing what he did. No one but those as sick as he shares this belief. Atta had Martir conjunct Chiron (a maverick, a self-destroyer), sextile Okyrhoe (loyalty to personal needs), square Lilith (repressed rage erupting, having to deal), trine Memnon (trying to bring about something new) and Astyanax (seen as a necessary sacrifice), and sesquiquadrate Mars (violence).
