Mallory

Asteroid 6824 Mallory was discovered on September 8, 1988 at Klet Observatory in the Czech Republic by Antonin Mrkos. It has a period of 5 years, 183 days. Mrkos named it for British adventurer and mountaineer George Mallory(1886-1924), who perished along with a fellow mountain-climber Andrew Irvine while climbing Mount Everest, probably as the result of a fall off the mountain. Their corpses were discovered high on the mountain in 1999. Asteroid 6825 was named Irvine in Andrew Irvine's honor. Mallory is credited with a famous response to the question of why he climbed mountains: "Because it's there."

George Mallory

Astrologically, Mallory signifies the lust for adventure or accomplishment or conquest, wanderlust, extensive travel, recklessness, going off half-cocked or ill-prepared, experiencing pure misfortune, falls from high places, being a missing person or presumed dead or destroyed.

"Because it's there."

Legendary stunt artist Evel Knievel, who has several domestic-violence arrests to his credit, has Mallory in the first house, conjunct Jupiter(expansion, philosophy, prosperity), Damocles(risk-taking, danger, to challenge), Philosophia, and the East Point(the way the world sees you); undecimal McAuliffe(liabilities) and the Part of Fortune(the life's development); sextile Vesta(dedication); quintile Juno(relationships); square Ceres(family); trine the Sun and Mercury; sesquiquadrate Chiron(the maverick, to teach or learn something); quincunx Mars(ruggedness, cars, violence) and Volta(to electrify); triseptile Neptune(ideality); opposite Fisher(looking for something); parallel Pinocchio(stupid lies); and contraparallel Lacrimosa(tragedy).

John F. Kennedy, Jr., who lived his entire life in the shadow of his assassinated father, who notably succeeded in virtually every line of work he put his hand to and whose mild recklessness in flying his light plane cost him, his wife and his sister-in-law their lives, had Mallory conjunct Ceres(family) and the Vertex(significant relationships); quintile the Part of Fortune; square Mercury(writing), Varuna(grandness) and Perseverantia; tredecile Venus(values); trine Simpson(to escape accountability); quincunx Mars(aggression); triseptile the Black Moon(wildness); quadnonagon Pluto(the unforgettable); parallel Ramirez(invasion by evil); and contraparallel Hylonome(popularity).

Marion Zioncheck, a U.S. representative who killed himself by jumping to his death from a Seattle hotel window in 1936, had Mallory in the sixth house, conjunct Philosophia; nonile Pluto; septile Neptune; square Pittsburghia(serious business); biseptile Vesta; tredecile Juno; trine Mars, Saturn and Simpson; quadraundecimal Chiron; sesquiquadrate Jupiter; biquintile the Sun and Uranus; triseptile the North Node(to rise above the past); quintundecimal Mercury; opposite Venus; parallel Fisher.

Diane Linkletter, daughter of TV personality Art Linkletter, jumped to her death from a sixth-floor balcony while on LSD on October 4, 1969. She had Mallory in the fifth house, on the cusp, semisquare the Sun; sextile Mercury; binonile the Black Moon; tredecile Saturn; trine the Ascendant(the physical body); sesquiquadrate the Part of Fortune; and parallel Mars.

George Mallory himself, who was born June 18, 1886 in Mobberley, Cheshire, England, had the following Mallory aspects: conjunct Uranus and Volta(to electrify); semisextile 1999 XX143(an eccentric); undecimal Lacrimosa; decile Gorky(bitterness); sextile Odysseus(cleverness), Tithonus(to outlive one's usefulness, to be unable to function), and 1998 BU48(a reality check); square Juno, Thule(too good for something), Rousseau(elemental challenges), and Panacea(problem-solving); trine Sootiyo(faith in something higher), Bologna(scoffing), Marathon(endurance), Quetzalcoatl(fallen heroes, teaching) and Cuitlahuac(coming to the end of the line); quincunx Thalia(life's a breeze); parallel Athanasia(immortal name); and contraparallel Flora(the flower of something).

In a March 9, 2002 accident in which scaffolding fell off the John Hancock Center in Chicago onto cars in the street, Mallory trined 1998 RG33(contentiousness); opposed Proserpina(death, other transitions, separation fears) and 1996 RX33(contentiousness); and quindeciled the Sun.

The glyph for Mallory is my own invention and was inspired by "snake eyes," two, a traditionally unlucky number in dice.
