Asteroid 8813 Leviathan was discovered on November 29, 1983 by Edward Bowell at the Anderson Mesa unit of Lowell Observatory near Flagstaff, Arizona. It is about 10 1/8 miles in diameter and has a period of 5 years, 230 days.
Asteroid Leviathan was named for The Leviathan of Parsonstown, which was what the great reflecting telescope built by the third Earl of Rosse in 1845 at Birr Castle, County Offaly, Ireland was called. For 75 years this telescope was the world's largest.
