Howell was named for astrophysicist Steve B. Howell (born 1955), a specialist in cataclysmic variable stars and the novae known as TOADs (tremendous outburst amplitude dwarf novae), astronomical objects which throw out vast quantities of glowing hot plasma and energy and increase their brightness at a geometric rate very quickly.
