ERICSSON OPEN 2001

    Magüi had a good performance in Miami (Ericsson Open) in 2001, where she reached the fourth round, losing to the world number one, Martina Hingis. Here a small report about that match.

    The Swiss Martina Hingis, first-seeded, defeated the Spaniard Magüi Serna, 20th-seeded, in the fourth round of the women’s tournament in Miami, in two sets by 6-3 and 6-4 in 75 minutes. It was their first meeting.

    Hingis had to do her utmost to win the first set. The Spaniard started dominating leading by 2-0, and later by 3-1, but the Swiss forced the rhythm from the fifth game, in which she broke back and drew the match, 3-3. The world number one didn’t ceded the initiative and won the set by 6-3.

    The second set was marked by the equality till the ninth game, when Hingis broke Magüi Serna’s serve, who was developing her best game. In the tenth and definitive game the Swiss, who has to win two more tournamets to get 40 as professional, held, with problems, her serve and she reached the quarterfinals in the fifth match point.
