Sydney 2000: A cold and the French Dechy KO Magüi

(Translation from La Provincia (20/09/00))

The Olympic debut of Magüi Serna was very short. The Canarian lost in two fast sets (6-1, 6-2) to the French Nathalie Dechy at the Tennis Centre of the Olympic Park in Sydney. Magüi was always behind in the score against a Dechy that pushed her and didn’t let her be in the match that lasted less than an hour, 59 minutes (the first set only 25 minutes)

The cold almost transmuted into flu that Magüi has had since her arrival in Sydney from new York, where she played the US Open, is an extenuation of her performance, although she refused to look for excuses.

The French, champion in her junior period of the Orange Bowl (unofficial world championship of the category) had a better first serve percentage, got 67 winners (Magüi only got 47) and made 21 unforced errors (Magüi made 36). Dechy broke six times the Spaniard’s serve, who could only break back once, in the second set.

Magüi said after the match that her rival’s game didn’t surprise her: “ She has done what she usually does, nothing special. I couldn’t play my game, I had no time. She has pushed me, but it was easy with a favorable score. If the match is close, the people don’t hit the ball so easily, but this wasn’t the case “.

The tennis player will stay some more days in Sydney “ to watch other sports, but without forgetting that I have more competitions soon, such as some indoor tournaments in Europe and in November we’ll go to the final four of the Fed Cup in Las Vegas with the Spanish team”.
