Magüi
Serna: "They had ignored us a little bit"
Magüi hadn’t enjoyed a day off in almost
a month, without taking the racket, and yesterday she spent part of this wished
day off at the Godó Open, which is dedicated this year to Arantxa Sánchez
Vicario. The Canarian, 24 years old, received many kisses and congratulations on
her wins in Budapest and Estoril.
Question: Two consecutive titles. It’s spoken again about the Spanish
women’s tennis thanks to you.
Answer: Yes, I’m glad that thanks
to my titles they talk again about the Spanish women’s tennis. With the
retirement of Arantxa and since Conchi hasn't had such good results it seems
there was nothing behind and they had ignored us a little, but I’m glad that
the people realise that there are more players.
Question: Is it hard or does it motivate that people try to compare you
with Arantxa or Conchita?
Answer: What you get seems to be nothing compared to what they have done, so at first it was hard and you even worry about it, and now it’s the other way, it’s a praise and a pride.
Question: What do these two consecutive
titles mean to you?
Answer: I’m very happy. I defended
the title in Estoril and it was very tough to repeat it, it was a surprise for
me. I’m very satisfied about the way I’m playing, although I’m not playing
my best tennis.
Question: Aren’t you?
Answer: No, I have played better,
but the difference is that I’m more constant now, more regular and I’m much
more sure. I notice this confidence on the court, and also my rivals do. I think
I have more maturity now, I play without so many nerves.
Question: Have your ten consecutive
wins given you this confidence?
Answer: Sure. If you win matches you
see the result of your efforts.
Question: You’re top 40. What’s
your goal?
