This is insane. Rebeka was overwhelmed, and, as often happened when she was overwhelmed, sought a way to explain this entire mess logically. Unfortunately, insanity was the only logical answer that presented itself. Magic is a myth. Dragons don’t exist. She repeated this mantra to herself many times while the humming around her grew louder and louder and the crowd began to get restless. While her friends began to get nervous and excited all at the same time, Rebeka was calm. In her mind, none of this could really be happening, as none of it made any sense. It wasn’t until Candy ran to meet the beautiful Akarath that the full reality of the situation began to close in on her.
"Great god." She murmured quietly, and consequently couldn’t be heard over the din of the crowd. "I’m really here."
A normally smart and logical person, Rebeka began to freak as she realized that this was all not only true, but amazing. "How am I going to live here? How does one find food, or shelter, especially if one has a dragon. I’ve got to talk to A’diar..." She turned towards the exit, and actually thought of leaving, when she saw the face of another girl. She’d met the girl, Ciara was her name, briefly and knew that she was also from Earth, supposedly. The look on her face told Rebeka that she was obviously a little nervous as well. She was responsible for the younger ones and now they were all here, off getting themselves into trouble. Rebeka couldn’t help but find that a little amusing, after all, none of the dragons were going to hurt them or anything. Rebeka smiled at her, realizing she must look just as panicked and realizing her fears must seem just as futile. Ciara, perhaps seeing in Rebeka exactly what Rebeka saw in her, smiled back. She turned back to the hatching, ready for whatever was going to come her way.
And what was coming her way was definitely ready for her. A cream/black dragoness sat on the sands and fanned her wings. Seeing that she finally had Rebeka’s full attention, the hatchling approached and gently stuck her head under Rebeka’s arm.
The girl who had always prided herself on her mental capacities was just about knocked off her feet when the dragon bespoke her. The two minds were one, now and forever. The feeling left Rebeka a little weak at the knees, but her confidence soared with her lifemate’s. I hope that you and I will be able to do everything right. I know you will. I know I already chose right. I am Genetaskath.
"Genetaskath..." Rebeka said the name carefully and with wonder. She laughed, happiness overwhelming her. "I feel like I could take on the whole world!"
Genetaskath bugled. Then I will do it with you!
As she rubbed her lifemate’s neck and took her towards the feeding grounds, Rebeka couldn’t help remembering an off comment Sammy had once made after she’d creamed him at a game of chess. We’ve got to watch her. It’s always the smart ones who try world domination.
Genetaskath’s voice, sounding small, and afraid, interrupted her memory. Her multi-faceted eyes were whirling yellow. We’re not really going to take over the world, are we rider-mine?
Rebeka, surprised the dragon could read her thoughts, wondered why she was getting such feelings of dread from her lifemate. "What?"
The cream/black nudged her lifemate with her nose. You were thinking of someone...someone you defeated in battle...someone who said you were planning world domination...
Rebeka laughed. "There’s so much I have to teach you. First off, chess is not a real battle, it’s a game of logic. Second, I’m not planning on taking over the world, my opponent was just joking around. Third, the man was just Sammy, and no one ever takes him seriously."
Genetaskath’s eyes turned deep blue very quickly. Oh. Good. I was worried for a second.
"Why?"
The dragoness began her first meal. Because I’m not big enough to take on the -whole- world yet. Just give me a little time to grow before you put your plan in motion.
Rebeka rolled her eyes, realizing that she was the receiving end of some very well planned sarcasm. "Genetaskath..." She was startled to discover how much she sounded like her mother.
The dragon’s eyes whirled faster in amusement. It’s always the quiet ones...
Rebeka stifled a yawn as the Weyrling Master continued his lecture on proper care of her lifemate. She sat, straight backed, listening carefully to every word the older man said, for the sole reason that the second she relaxed she knew she was going to fall asleep. The fact that every tidbit of information the man gave them was already things that Rebeka knew, did not help much at all. The man seemed to think they’d never seen a dragon before...
Rebeka felt Genetaskath’s amusement at that thought. Of all the people in the class, she should be one of the least knowledgeable about dragon-kin. Her friends were certainly clueless, but Rebeka could probably have given the days lecture.
That’s because you’ve read just about everything ever written on us. The black/cream was not supposed to talk to her rider while she was in class, but she just couldn’t pass up the opportunity to remind her rider that she was human. Rebeka was only the best because she’d booked more hours of study than anyone else on the planet.
I don’t like not knowing things. It makes me feel stupid. Rebeka was glad for the distraction, Genetaskath could keep her awake.
The dragon was amused by this as well. Rider-mine, you’d have to try to be stupid, and even then you’d fail. The black/cream stretched, happily basking in the sun while her rider got lectured. And the only reason you’re tired is because you kept both of us up half the night practising.
Rebeka didn’t answer for the simple reason that she couldn’t think of anything to say. Every word her lifemate spoke was true. Only yesterday, they’d finally been given permission to try flying on their own, the Weyrling Master told them that he expected at least fourteen hours of solo airtime before their next flying lesson. Genetaskath had spent many hours convincing Rebeka that he meant fourteen hours total, not fourteen hours a night. I just want you to be the best.
You just want to be the best. The dragon wasn’t accusing her rider of anything, or even sulking. Genetaskath was happy with her chosen bond, after all, Rebeka’s desire to obtain perfection was one of things that drew the dragon to her, but the fact was, perfection was hard to obtain and sleep was a requirement of living.
Rebeka sighed, knowing this, as well, to be true. I can’t help it.
You just need to be perfect, or as close to perfect as humanly, or dragonly, possible. The dragon was amused, but realized that she might have hurt her rider’s pride. She silently reminded Rebeka of how much she loved her. I understand rider-mine. Completely.
Rebeka smiled. Thanks.
"Rebeka?" The Weyrling Master was looking at her expectantly. She had obviously just been asked a question. Panic began to flood her senses, she couldn’t answer this question wrong, it would make her look stupid. What had the man asked? What could he have possibly asked? What was this damn lecture even on? The Weyrling Master was growing impatient.
Rebeka swallowed deeply and looked around the room for help. Her friends, who spent a lot of their time giving each other the answers, were too shocked that Rebeka didn’t know the answer to be of any help. I need a way out of here! NOW!
Her dragon responded quickly. Your flit egg is hatching. She got up and flew towards Rebeka’s dragonledge.
I can’t lie! Rebeka rubbed her sweaty palms together. "Sir..." Her voice cracked as she spoke the syllable. She searched for the words to tell him that she hadn’t been paying attention. It would have been an easy task for most anybody else, but Rebeka had honestly never done this before.
Have I ever lied to you? Genetaskath sent Rebeka a nice picture of the rocking firelizard egg.
Thank god! Rebeka cleared her throat again and held her head high. "Sir, my firelizard egg is hatching. Genetaskath has just informed me. May I please be excused?"
The Weyrling Master, wondering if this was just some trick to get out of answering the question, examined her closely. "Are you sure?"
Rebeka smiled smugly. "Have I ever lied to you sir?"
The man dismissed her with a wave of his hand and she hurried towards the kitchens. Rebeka beamed as she ran quickly down the halls.
What are you so happy about? Genetaskath sensed the happiness and excitement that came from the impending hatching, but there was also a sense of pride that shone over everything else.
Rebeka entered the weyr, carrying a bowl of meat, positively aglow. "I love being right."
Rebeka fought back sleep as she watched her new, beautiful, silver hatchling eat. He was so much smaller than any other flit Rebeka had seen, but her research told her that that was normal for rare baby flits.
Is there anything you don’t know? Genetaskath was exhausted as well. The dragoness welcomed the presence of the little flit, it meant no midnight training.
"Yes." Rebeka stifled a yawn. "I have no idea what I’m going to call him."
The cream/black got a mischievous grin. Can I name him?
Rebeka was too tired to notice the draconic smirk. "Go for it."
Then his name is Saggio. The dragoness laid her head down on her forelegs. Now let’s go to sleep.
Rebeka’s curiosity was triggered. "Saggio? Why Saggio?" The silver flit yawned and crawled into Rebeka’s lap for a nap.
I thought you knew everything rider-mine. Genetaskath smiled as she drifted off to sleep.
Rebeka sighed. "Saggio." The flit didn’t respond. Rebeka, carefully cradling the little flit, climbed into her own bed. "What does it mean?"
The dragon, who was obviously not as asleep as expected, rumbled her amusement. I do believe there are some things humans were not meant to know.
Sammy, Sammy, Sammy... Rebeka shook her head sadly as she watched Enzeruth break away from his wing and twirled magnificently through the air, barely missing another rider who was flying in their proper formation. He can’t control that beast at all.
I wouldn’t go so far as to call Enzeruth a beast. Genetaskath, outwardly, seemed completely composed, but Rebeka knew exactly was her lifemate was thinking about. He’s cute.
He’s Sammy’s, and an idiot. Rebeka shook her head at the less than startling performance that had obviously been staged for Genetaskath’s benefit.
He’s daring. Not every dragon is as perfect as me. Genetaskath flipped her tail back and forth, the biggest defiance to the wing structure the cream/black had ever tried.
We’ve been over this Genetaskath. Rebeka was sounding like her mother again. She couldn’t help it. She needed to be in control of the situation. Genetaskath understood that and dutifully obeyed her rider’s commands. Saggio seemed to understand this and remained one of the best obeyed flit in the entire Weyr. Rebeka sighed as she caught sight of her silver and a light orange she was going to assume was Sammy’s Mafla attacking each other.
Genetaskath found the entire fight amusing and exciting. I suppose even the best behaved flit still fights with it’s companions every now and then.
As the cream/black descended from the sky, Rebeka took an instant to wonder why the dragon was finding this so amazingly wonderful. It was almost like she was waiting for something to happen, or waiting for Rebeka to leave. Genetaskath...
Deal with your flitter rider-mine. The black/cream flicked her tail back and forth, she was overflowing with energy.
Rebeka wanted to pry farther, but she could see that Sammy was having no luck extracting Mafla from the fight. She snapped her fingers. "Saggio. Come."
The silver flitter, knowing better than to disobey his master, broke off the argument instantaneously and returned to Rebeka’s shoulder. The rider had never hurt her pet, but Saggio never wanted to sit through one of Rebeka’s lectures again.
Mafla, who got to pretty much do whatever she wanted, didn’t think her master’s command worth listening to and, while she did return to Sammy’s shoulder, she kept scratching at the air and Sammy.
Rebeka fought back a smile as she tapped Saggio on the nose for hissing. Sammy was one of her best friends, but she wanted to end this meeting as quickly as possible. The multitude of emotions Genetaskath was sending her threw her off balance and she didn’t trust herself to talk to her friend without giggling like a school-girl.
Sammy winced in pain, fighting for control against his flit, and offered her a half smile. "Sorry ‘bout that. Don’t know what gets into her sometimes."
Rebeka smiled back. "No problem. If I know Saggio, he probably started it."
Sammy opened his mouth to reply to Rebeka’s comment, but both of their attentions were grabbed by their lifemates. Genetaskath and Enzeruth seemed to continue the flitters argument on a larger scale.
What are you doing?!? Rebeka couldn’t believe her dragon would behave in such a manner. Stop now! Behave!
Rider-mine, I am behaving in exactly the correct manner for a dragon in my situation. Genetaskath wasn’t making fun of Enzeruth, she was taunting him, daring him to come and get her.
Rebeka felt light headed as the full force of the situation was revealed to her. No... She reached out to Sammy, hoping he could stop her from passing out. As it turned out, he caught her half-way to the ground.
"Hey." He obviously didn’t know what was going on. "You okay?"
"No." Rebeka didn’t know how to fix this situation and it was making her nervous. "I’m definitely wrong. Genetaskath’s definitely wrong."
"What?" Sammy was nervous because he was confused. Rebeka was nervous because she wasn’t.
"She’s flying...like -flying-." Rebeka was still white and leaning on her friend.
"Flying?" Sammy’s eyes quickly darted to Enzeruth, probably telling the blue to behave himself..
Rebeka almost found that funny. If Genetaskath wasn’t listening to her, the chances of Enzeruth listening to Sammy were next to infinitesimal.
Somewhere along the line someone who was not totally shocked by the news alerted the Weyrwoman and Wingleaders and the skies were cleared. Other males began to bugle their intent to chase, but Genetaskath refused to acknowledge them. Her eyes were fixed on Enzeruth. Without blooding a kill or anything the gracefully, elusive black/cream leapt into the air.
With a bugle of disappointment, all the other dragons stayed on the ground. They understood that this was a private flight.
Magika breathed a sigh of relief. "Never mind getting the sands ready. This is just a show of affection I think." Magika smiled. "Genetaskath’s not ready to clutch."
The Weyrwoman was right. No blooding, no other chasers, Genetaskath and Enzeruth were just showing that they liked each other. Sammy and Rebeka had quickly separated and were now looking as if they didn’t even know each other.
"Why would they do something like this?" Mik’len was only mildly annoyed by the fact they’d ruined a whole day of training for a false alarm.
Magika pointed to Rebeka and Sammy. "Go figure."
I am -never- talking to you again! Rebeka was more upset about Genetaskath causing such a disturbance in the Weyr than the fact that she was flying.
All dragons begin having flight desires around my age. You should be happy that I’m normal. Even if it was just for fun, Genetaskath was putting up quite a fight. The two dragons soon decided to take it out of Adanuk Weyr and the prying eyes of the entire Weyrbowl. Sammy and Rebeka followed them. They were the only ones.
Normal would involve more chasers, blooding a kill and an actual intent to clutch. Rebeka found this entire experience amazing. She felt drunk or something, her normal carefulness and reserve fading as Genetaskath twirled and whirled.
Practice flight. The cream/black’s replies were getting shorter and shorter as Enzeruth got closer and closer. Genetaskath was just a little slow on the turn, and Enzeruth grabbed a hold of her. She roared in protest, but after two turns growing up beside the cream/black, and two turns of wanting her, he wasn’t letting go.
Sammy quickly turned around and found that somehow he’d ended up beside Rebeka. He gave her a half-smile. "Hey."
She returned it. "Hey." Saggio and Mafla were sitting beside each other watching their riders with interest.
He was obviously uncomfortable and trying to ignore Enzeruth. "Nice day."
Rebeka giggled. She had never bothered learning how to repress emotions sent to her by her lifemate as Genetaskath had never been prone to big shows of emotions. The force of Genetaskath’s will was completely overwhelming the rider. She felt giddy and unable to control herself. Sammy never looked so good. She saw the look of surprise on his face, realized this was amazingly out of character, and giggled again. "What else do you expect me to do when our dragons are happily...happy behind us and you’re trying to talk about the weather."
Sammy shrugged. "Give me a hand. Unless you like the alternative."
Rebeka discovered, with a little bit of shock that was quickly covered over by the happy giggling, that she did like the alternative. Without another word of warning she kissed him. She was relieved to note that he was kissing back.
He smiled as his fingers when to untie her shirt. "I take it we’re going with the alternative."
She blushed and kissed him harder. "I guess so." I can’t believe I’m doing this...this is all your fault.
I know. Genetaskath let Rebeka know exactly what was in store for her.
"Would you believe me if I told you your surprising?"
"I guess you don’t know me as well as you thought you did." What do you have to say for yourself?
"Yeah." He smirked as he finally gave in to what he was feeling.. "Fifteen years and you think you know a person..."
You’re welcome.
