The Imperial Palace, popularly known as the Forbidden City, used to be
the permanent residence of the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties,
Built during the period of Emperor Yongle of 1406-1420 AD, it has a
history of over 570 years, Measuring some 753 metres from east to west,
and 961 metres from north to south, it covers an areaof 720,000 square
metres with nearly 9,000 rooms, Surrounded by walls of about
10 Metres high, and a city moat of some 52 metres wide, it has a
gate on each side and a corner tower of ingenious style and structure
at each of the four cormers.  The buildings of the Imperial Palace consist
of two parts.  The front part includes mainly the three grand halls;
Tai He Dian (Hall of Great Harmony), Zhong He Dian (Hall of Middle
Harmony), and Bao He Dian (Hall of Preserving Harmony) with the
Hall of Literary Glory in the east and the Hall of Military Eminences in
the west.  Called the "Outer Court", it is the place where the emperor
used to hold important ceremonies: the rear part of the "Inner
Palace" consists of Qian Qing Gong (Palace of Heavenly Purity),
Jiao Tai dian (Hall of Union) and Kun Ning Gong (Palace of Earthly
Tranquility) -- Yang Xin Dian (Hall of Mental Cultivation) as well as the
six palaces in the east and those six in the west, and Yu Hua Yuan
(Imperial Garden), where the empress and concubines lived and
spent their leisure hours.  The Imperisl Palace is the most intact group of
ancient architecture, the largest of its kind that China has well preserved
to this day. It epitomizes the acme of traditional style and art of the nation
in architecrure of China's ancient times.
