Przewalski's Horse / Wild Horse | ||||||||||
Equus przewalskii | ||||||||||
The wild horse was once found in central European woodland. Other grassland living forms were distributed across central Asia. Wild Horses have a yellow-brown coat colour, and dark black mane and tails. The belly is whiter in colour. The lower legs and muzzle can also be black. They weigh between 210 and 350kg, and have a height 2-3m. The wild horse is now extinct in the wild having hung on for longest in Asia. Luckily many specimens were captured and bred in zoos, and there is a thriving zoo population. In the late 1990s attempts were made to introduce Wild Horses onto nature reserves on the Hungarian Steppes, with some success. In the future it is hoped to start further wild groups in Mongolia, one of the places they survived longest before becoming extinct. The Wild Horse is the ancestor of the domesticated horse. In the wild they live in small groups of females, led by a single male. Other males are excluded from the groups. Mating occurs in the spring and pregnancy lasts nearly a year. Wild Horses eat grass and herbs. The Woodland European form was smaller than the other grassland types of Wild Horse. It became extinct in Europe in the early 19th century. |
