The Legend of Unicorn Valley
Plot
- Starts in the Gemstone Mountains at a Dwarf High Counsel meeting in the Onyx Caves.
- All the leaders of the dwarves are speaking on the matter of Unicorn Valley and the goblins in the area of the Gemstone Mountains. Goblins were not known to live on the west side of the Mountains of Mist.
- They decide to have a young dwarf take the Sword of Merryweather back to the valley to its owner, Milo Merryweather.
- Since the sword was entrusted to Jasper Stone fifty years prior and now he was too old to make the trek, his discontented son, Morganite, was to take the sword back to the valley.
- Morganite leaves soon after he has his provisions for the weeklong journey happy for the respite of the everyday humdrum of his life.
- As he was passing the Whiton Swamp, just barely ten miles from his home in the Emerald Caves, he was toppled over by his friend Toad. He’s a Swamp Elf.
- Toad quickly shoves three loafs of bread, a small bag of swamp apples, and two large bottles of swamp whiskey into Morganite’s arms and runs off into the woods opposite the way he came.
- Morganite looks down at all that’s been piled in his arms and when he hears angry voices coming from the swamp the way Toad had come, he realizes what Toad has done and drops the food and runs after Toad into the woods.
- When Morganite catches up to Toad he proceeds to tell him off. Toad complains that Morganite left all that food behind and then goes on the whining about how that food was owed to him for work he had done for the Willows, another family of Swamp Elves.
- Morganite tells Toad that he is going to Unicorn Valley and has no time to argue his friends case to the Willows.
- Morganite sets off for the second time and finds that Toad has decided to come with him, complaining all the way.
- The mountain pass was fair and when the two friends reached the end it was past midnight so they made a small campfire and two centaurs, Dar and Ambrose, join them.
- The centaurs know of many things happening in the Forest of Light and outside the forest. Centaurs are skilled in battle tactical, medicinal herbs, and what’s edible from the Firedrake Forest to the Gryffin Mountains and beyond.
- When Toad and Morganite wake the next morning their two new friends are gone. They break their fast and continue the two-day trek through the forest.
- They journey until mid-day when they happen upon the hidden Elven village of Gimória, when they stopped for their mid-day meal.
- They were welcomed, if somewhat coldly, into Gimória because Toad was an Elf even though he was about three feet shorter than the elves of Gimória.
- While in Gimória they met a very kind elf named Forest who took an immediate liking to Toad. By the end of their four-hour lunch Toad and Forest were friends even though Toad refused to even admit it to himself.
- Toad and Morganite decide to take a scenic road off the main beaten path and they run into a giant named Acorn. He wasn’t very smart except when it came to words and rhyming. He somehow talked Morganite and Toad into staying for a dinner of frog legs stew and fresh herb bread and then the night.
- They left late the next morning with their packs full of food and a few gifts of beautifully whittled wood of a Unicorn and a Centaur.
- When they reach Unicorn Valley, Morganite is relieved to see wheat and rye in the fields and animals in the pastures. But when they reach the first small village of Wheatland, they are astounded at what they see.
- The villagers, a mix of humans and Forest Elves, are dressed in rags and so thin that their bones protrude through their clothing and around every one of their necks was hung a sign with their name and the word slave. The huts are falling in and there was waste and trash scattered everywhere.
- What disturbed Morganite most was the control the Goblins had over the slaves. From the stories and tails he had heard from the traders that came into the Gemstone Mountains, Unicorn Valley was a place free of all dark creatures including goblins.
- Instead of going into the decaying village, they skirted the fields and headed to the north. Morganite’s father, Jasper Stone, said that Milo Merryweather lived in Richefield, north of Wheatland.
- Their walk was hard because of the large amount of goblins infesting the fields and road to Richefield. Toad and Morganite decided that the road and fields were too dangerous and took a short cut through a field left to fallow for the season, back to the forest.
- They walked for a time just far enough in the forest where they couldn’t be seen. By the time they reached the end of the forest covering they could see Richefield. Morganite thought it better if they entered the village under the cover of the night.
- The centaur Ambrose said that there would be only half a moon that night and to use it well. When the moon rose high over their heads they sneaked past the goblin guards and into the largest hut. Morganite had been told that Milo Merryweather would have the largest and grandest of homes in the village. The hut looked to have been grand at some point in its long-standing life.
- When they entered the hut they were deeply discouraged to find only women and children. A fair young woman was pouring water into dirty bowls and talking kindly and quietly to the frightened women, giving them what comfort she could.
- Morganite pulled the girl aside and asked her the whereabouts of old Milo Merryweather. She told him the sad tail of Milo Merryweather’s untimely death and the death of his wife. She told them that she was Cloe, old Merryweather’s daughter; she also told that she was her parents’ only living child.
- Morganite felt sure that he was suppose to give the sword to Cloe and did so. She was very grateful and asked only one favor of him. He said he would do whatever he could.
- Cloe asks him to go back into the Forest of Light and ask any and all creature of the light to come to the aid of the Unicorn Valley.
- Morganite wasn’t sure how he could get anyone to come. Cloe tells him to tell all that he comes across that if they don’t unite now under the Sword of Merryweather, Lord Touron will spill into the forests and mountains and take every last free creature of light as his slaves. He wants power and control. His only weakness is the Merryweather family and the magic that they wield.
- Morganite and Toad leave quickly and quietly the way they had come and flee back into the woods. When they stop Morganite tells Toad to go back through the Forest of Light and through the Mountains of Mist to call upon the Dwarves and the Swamp Elves. Morganite would stay in the forest and try to find the Forest Elves and the Centaurs again and some of the other creatures and ask for their help.
- Before they can set off, little, round, colourful lights start to swirl around their heads. The forest faeries had eavesdropped and giggle as they fly away.
- Morganite hopes that they aren’t on Lord Touron’s side.
- After Toad runs into the night Morganite starts to head back to the road that he and Toad had used to come to the valley and thinks better of it. If there were goblins in the field and in the villages then there were surely going to be goblins on the roads, even at night.
- He follows the forest’s edge until he reaches the place where he and Toad had come out of the forest and follows it, staying close to the path but not on it.
- He reaches Acorn the Giants hut shortly after sunrise and falls asleep in exhaustion. When he awakes, Acorn has a hot meal ready for him. While Morganite eats he tells Acorn of all that he has seen in Unicorn Valley.
- Acorn listens quietly, absorbing all that his new friend is saying. He will tell the other Giants of the forests to come to the aid of the Merryweather girl.
- Morganite sees to it that all the right message is written on the notes that Acorn’s specially trained pigeons will be taking to the other Giants in all the forests of Elamordia and departs to find the Forest Elves.
- In his rush and hast Morganite can’t find where he and Toad had seen the Elves. When he sits down in discouragement he finds himself in Gimória.
- Morganite is surprised to learn that those who would do the Elves no harm are always able to find the villages of the Elves. When he finds Forest he tells him of all that he had seen and asks for the Forest Elves help.
- Forest is unable to give the go ahead that the Elves will help. He tells Morganite that he will have to appeal to the high counsel of Gimória.
- Morganite goes to the high counsel only to be turned away. They feel that they are above all magic except the Unicorns. They feel that Lord Touron would never be able to find them in their hidden villages.
- He pleads his case and then tells them of what he had seen in Unicorn Valley. The servitude and desolation. The Forest Elves reluctantly agree.
- That night he is lodged very well and finds that the Elves are not the only creatures of light to be living in Gimória. Gnomes and Wood Nymphs live in the protection of the Elves.
- Morganite willingly gets the help of the Gnomes and the Wood Nymphs. They want to live freely in the Forests again and not in hiding.
- When he leaves the next morning Forest and a few Gnomes join him to travel back to the valley.
- They travel off the main road through the Forest of Light to the place where Morganite and Toad parted paths.
- It takes four days for the Forest Elves, Giants, Centaurs, Gnomes and Nymphs to arrive at the edge of the Forest of Light. When Toad still isn’t there after all the creatures’ of light have arrived, Morganite becomes worried.
- He wonders if maybe the Goblins got him on his way through the pass?
- He has no time to worry further because Cloe arrives at the Rebel Creatures of Light camp. She feels that Lord Touron has been gaining more power and needs to be stopped, handicapped, before he can get control of the Mountains of Mist.
- She tells them that he is sending a large troop of Goblins to the eastside of Unicorn Valley across the Salazar River, to Greenhill, a small village to collect his tribute.
- A small troop of Elves, Centaurs, Giants, and Dwarves travel east through the Forest of Light to Greenhill and wait for the cover of dark to ambush the Goblins.
- During the battle the small village was set aflame. The Goblins and Creatures of Light fight fiercely. They loose a few Creatures of Light and all he Goblins are destroyed in the short battle.
- Because the village of Greenhill is in flames the poor villagers have no place to go. Morganite insists that they go to Gimória; Forest isn’t so sure that it would be such a great idea for the humans to know where a Forest Elf village is.
- Morganite says that the Elves are the only ones who can heal the Humans fast enough so they can join in the war against Lord Touron.
- Forest finally agrees with Morganite and takes the sickly Humans back to Gimória.
- Morganite knows that Lord Touron will quickly learn of the destruction of Greenhill and of his Goblins.
- Before they can disappear back into the Forest a beautiful, middle-aged woman comes out of the smoke. She tells them that she is a witch and greatly feared by Lord Touron.
- Morganite later asks the witch, Serendipity, why Lord Touron is so afraid of her. She tells him that Touron is afraid of magic itself that’s why he is enslaving not only the Creature of Light but also the Creatures of the Dark.
- Acorn tells Morganite, through a mouth full of rhymes, that a witch can’t be trusted. Morganite says that they don’t have a choice, they need all the help that they can get.
- Serendipity comes with them back to the Rebel Creatures of Light camp. Morganite asks Serendipity why she has such a hate for Lord Touron other than making her and the rest of her village starve to death, while he sits happy up in his castle in the west. Morganite believes her and welcomes her gladly.
- When Forest returns a few days later he tells Morganite that he has seen their friend Toad. He has been captured by Goblins and is probably in Lord Touron’s castle by now.
- Morganite is saddened; he’s heard that anyone going into the castle, other than Goblins, Trolls, or Lord Touron, never comes out again.
- Morganite goes off on his own to think about when Toad and he were growing up as children (forty years ago).
- The next day Morganite is angered beyond reckoning and wants to end the war so he can take his friend’s body back to his family and get on with his life.
- Cloe thinks it would be wise for them to spread out along the Forest of Light. Lord Touron will have known that it was someone from the Forest of Light or beyond.
- Serendipity says that she would use herself as bait. She knew that Lord Touron would send out great hoards of Goblins and Trolls to capture her.
- Cloe agreed upon the plan and three days later Serendipity walked into a field in Wheatland, spreads her arms and begins to cast a bogus spell.
- The Goblins and Trolls are attracted to the magical aura she emits and just before they close around her a great battle cry arises from the Forest of Light.
- All along the ten-mile edge of the Forest the Rebel Creatures of Light erupt from the Forest and begin to attack the Goblins and Trolls around the villages of Unicorn Valley.
- Morganite made his way to Lord Touron’s castle with the help of his ax and Acorn, but just as he is about to cross the drawbridge and into the courtyard, they is captured by a troop of Trolls.
- He is taken directly to Lord Touron who is “cowering” in his castle and watching the fighting from his quarters in the highest tower in the castle.
- Lord Touron is surprised to see that a Dwarf is responsible for all the problems that have been happening in his valley.
