The agonizing shrieks of the wounded, the throaty coughs of the dying and the barking guns drowned out the panting and cursing of the hard-working executioners, repeating that left-to right right-to-left sweep of destruction as they glutted their murderous appetites upon the feast of blood. Bullets ripped into soft, yielding flesh, some tearing off bits and burying themselves with the ribbons of flesh in the wall ahead. Others tore into the fresh wounds and made gaping holes. A shotgun roared above the din, its charge obliterating a man's face, stenching the air with the acrid smell of powder fumes and loosing the steam of warm flesh and blood. The withering blast kept up until the last man was down. Satisfied with the havoc wrought, the leader ordered a halt. The four right-faced and marched out, two in front with their hands up, the two in uniform behind them, prodding them with their smoking guns.

For the definitive account read The St. Valentine's Day Massacre by William J. Helmer and Arthur Bilek. And watch for Rose Keefe's comprehensive biography The Man That Got Away: The Bugs Moran Story. Rose also authored Guns and Roses, the compelling life story of Dean O'Banion, Chicago's legendary florist-gangster whose "handshake murder" touched off the five years of "Beer Wars" culminating in the carnage at the S.M.C. Cartage Co. garage. All may be ordered from CUMBERLAND HOUSE or at any bookstore.
