Summer BooksWe Were The Mulvaneys by: Joyce Carol Oates Page Turner Thoroughly enjoyable diddy about an all american family and the horrible incident that started a chain of events that would eventually break the family apart. Excellent writing and very believable. I liked it a lot! Bag Of Bones by: Stephen King Page Turner I haven't read a Stephen King book in years. Not since the Dark Tower series, anyways. HAH! I really liked this one, though. A haunted love story, the main character is a writer who has recently lost his wife due to a tragic anurism. He develops writers block and moves to 'Sarah Laughs'.Let the haunting begin. The House Of Sand And Fog by: Andre Dubus III Good Read Story of a man who just can't seem to do anything right. Colonel Behrani, once a wealthy man in Iran, buys a house at a foreclosure auction. The previous owner, a raging alcoholic american woman, drives him over the brink, insisting the house is still hers! Interesting read. Daughter Of Fortune by: Isabel Allende Page Turner Heartfelt saga of the life and times of the chile boy. I won't tell you that chile boy is a woman. So you didn't hear it from me. Translated from Spanish~ this intriguing tale of life as it was traveling from Chile (or anywhere?) to San Francisco during the gold rush of 1849. The Naked Ape by: Desmond Morris PAGE TURNER Fascinating book about the study of the human species as told thru by a zoologist. After reading this book, I immediately found someone to have a 'stare down' contest with. I recommend this book to anyone who wonders about the evolution of the human race. While I Was Gone by: Sue Miller CRAPPER This was an Oprah pick. How do I keep getting sucked into Oprah picks? I was waiting for this book to start and it never did. I was hoping that the character in the book would have a full blown nervous breakdown and go berserk. Unfortunately none of the happened. I promise this is the last Oprah pick I will ever read. What We Keep by: Elizabeth Berg CRAPPER Easy to read,Boring as hell, this story is about a woman who recalls her past on a long flight..267 pages worth, to visit a mother she hasn't seen in 35 years. Predictable. Geek Love by: Katherine Dunn PAGE TURNER hehe This story is crazy! It's about a guy that inherits a circus, but he doesn't have any GEEKS , and needs to create his own. Dr, Phyllis is my 'fave'. Her concept of 'fixing' a beautiful young woman's life is to deform her in a fashion that ensures a young man will never look twice at her. and thus, further her self, her life, her education, and her pocketbook. (She pays cash.) Widow For A Year by:John Irving GOOD READ ~ John writes this one from a womans point of view. Intriguing tale about a woman novelist who goes a little too far in the name of 'research'. Also, some good driving tips never, NEVER turn your wheels in anticipation of the turn! The Seat Of The Soul: by: Gary Zukav ENLIGHTENING ~This book is about the evolution of the human species and how we are evolving into multi-sensory humans. The theory is that we are using more than the basic 5 senses in this day and age. The book also explains a really inspirational theory of how we are all living out our own Kharma. I read it twice. Very good book. I can even hear Gary talking in that monotone lobotomized voice of his. Life Stratagies:by: Phil McGraw ENLIGHTENING ~I know, I know, that's two enlightening books in a row but I need good self-help book once in a while. This book is about learning how to get off your dead ass and start making things happen. Phil really gets down to the nitty gritty and pulls no punches as he explains that if you don't do it for yourself, no one will. One thing I liked about it was he gives you some assignments to figure out why it is your life is so screwed up and how to change it. A definite read if you are not happy with your current situation and want some advice on how to change your life. I think Phil is kewl, too. The Cider House Rules:by: John Irving GOOD READ ~I always read the book before seeing the movie. I read this book about a year ago and still haven't seen the movie. Homer Wells is an orphan who was taken in by a loving abortion doctor at St. Clouds Orphanage... and grows up to be an abortionist himself. "Here at St. Clouds, there will always be one problem. There will always be orphans" says Dr. Larch. Very good read about the controversial subject of abortion. Full of thought provoking dilemmas. A Prayer For Owen Meany:by: John Irving PAGE TURNER ~ A wonderful story about best friends. Owen Meany, the kid with the raspy voice shows one man the meaning of spirituality through truth. Antics galore in this book and I love Owen Meany for being honest. Very refreshing. HILARIOUS! Atlas Shrugged by: Ayn Rand ENLIGHTENING ~ Even though this book was written in 1957, I really see a lot of similarities with the corporate world as we know it today.. For instance, if you think about the Bill Gates thing, and Microsoft. This book is precisely about how the big guy can be BIG, but not too big that he screws with the govt. Ayn Rand has her own philosophy. Altruism=*TO THINE OWN SELF BE TRUE*. This book illustrates "Do what you love and the rest will follow". High 5!, Ayn Rand! The Bridges of Madison Countyby: Robert James Waller GOOD READ ~ A heartbreaking romance novel. This one sucked my right in. I re-read it last year, and saw the movie, twice. Is a better book after you see the movie. (Or could it be a better movie after you read the book?) ? Meryln Streep?Clint Eastwood? Ahhh, romance. The Poisonwood Bible by: Barbara Kingsolver PAGE TURNER ~ Wonderfully written novel about a family that follows it's crazy minister father into the jungles of the Congo. The story is told by each member of the family, except the crazy whacked out minister. A marvelous story of survival told in a most delicious style. I loved it! I read this one in four days it was so good. Library updated on the Machine O~ Schemes. May 18, 2001 by: Madame Webmeister™ |
