Cult TV? What in heavens name is that? Well I'm not sure I'm the best person to ask exactly what it is as I
mainly just appreciate it instead of research the cause. There are quite a few good sites on cult tv - much better than I think this one will ever be
- and I will try to provide some links for you to explore it's nature as defined by the experts. As far as I'm concerned, Cult TV are the shows
that attract a large fan base and attract almost a sub culture around it as far as fan fiction or 'convention' type events are concerned. I suppose the first
real show that I was attracted to ( in Cult Tv terms ) was Star Trek the Next Generation. For years it was my favorite show and I even *gasp* attended a
convention at the Albert Hall in London where I was lucky enough to see Micheal Dorn, Gates McFadden and Patrick Stewart.
Over the years I have come to love many Cult shows, my favorite for the last few years being Xena Warrior Princess followed by Buffy the Vampire Slayer
and, recently, Angel. The last three shows mentioned are still in production with STNG still having movies produced but the magic of Cult Tv is that the
legacy of the show last way beyond the last aired episode. Shows such as Blake 7, Space 1999 and Logan's run - all firm favorites of mine - still live on
in cyberspace and in convention halls and clubs. In fact rumour has it that Blake 7 will return soon to the silver screen. Such is the power of Cult Tv :-)
On this page I will provide some information on my favorite shows with links to help you on your way to fandom. I doubt it will ever reach the 'Cult' status of some
sites but at least I will be contributing to the cause. Long live Cult TV!
Screengrabs!!!
(the good stuff first!)
- Xena Warrior Princess
This show, pretty much my current absolute favorite, depicts Lucy Lawless as Xena with Renee O'Conner as Gabrielle. Now at the end of it's 5th season, it has constantly
entertained me with the stories becoming more complex and intriging as time has progressed. Lucy Lawless is one of my favorite actresses and she constantly
impresses me with her depiction of a 'mass murderer' redeemed.
- Cleopatra 2525
This show, another offspring from Studio USA, is fairly new and is one of the two shows produced to replace Hercules. I place it in my list as it
seems I am partial to shows produced by this company. It depicts the adventures of one woman from the past doing battle with two women of the future to free Earth
from an alien influence.
- Jack of All Trades
This is the second half of the 'Back to Back' Action hour and stars Bruce Campbell as Jack Stiles in the lead role. Another new show, this one has taken to my
fancy more than I originally thought. It seemed at first it would be too childish a concept ( yes I know all the shows I like seem childish to a lot of people)
but I now find myself a firm fan of the show. I think it is due mostly to Mr Campbell's excellent character acting - and the fact that I could never resist a swashbuckler ;-)
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer
This is one show I came to very late in it's career. To be totally honest, and perhaps shallow, the very name 'Buffy' seemed to put me off. The idea of a high
school student named Buffy slaying vampires seemed beyond all ridicule. However, I did come to watch the show and was happy, and dismayed, to find it was indeed quite good and,
in true Xena fashion, kicked butt :-) I made it my mission to catch up on past sins and watch the first three series and became an ardent fan of the vampire slaying female.
A show with many good characters - Willow and Faith being only two of them - I now have another female lead to follow.
- Angel
Obviously the spin off show from Buffy, this again hits the top of my favorite programming list. The tale of a cursed vampire trying to do good in Los Angeles while get over
losing the love of his life and come to terms with evil deeds done past is far too romantic a story line for me to pass up :-)
- Star Trek the Next Generation
What can I say that already hasn't been said? Possibly the greatest show ever made with the most talented actor ( Patrick Stewart, of course ) at it's helm. Nuff said!
- Voyager
The best part of this show is Seven of Nine - definetly. Although a long term STNG fan I find that only the stories with Seven seem to hold my interest. A good show though, following
in the footsteps of good shows gone by.
- Babylon 5
Another show I did not get to grips with when it first aired. Although I liked Sinclair the change of lead to John Sheridan leading the helm seemed to suit me better and got me hooked on the
show. A great soap opera of a story with fantastic story lines and great characters. Five years just wasn't enough!
- Blakes 7
Now this is going back a few years and can really claim fame to being Cult TV! I watched this show when it first aired in England in the late '70's early '80's and watched
it again on video when it was released. Paul Darrow is my absolute favorite character as Avon - the unwilling leader of a bunch of rebels being a pain in the Federation back side.
His loyalty to Blake and his cool hard style of command made for constant viewing - even if the days of huge special effects budgets were'nt here yet.
- South Park
Ok - whoever doesn't think that Cartman isn't king would have a hard time around my house. Although not Science Fiction or fantasy these four little 'darlings' have
made me laugh so much that they have cult status in my heart!
- And more to come.....
