THE LAST ROLL CALL | |||||||||||
On the map below, one site with a U.D.C. marker stating "40 soldiers were buried here", is located just north of 6th street on the west end where the number 223 is located on the map. Another and larger site is located south of 8th street "or the last street". The marker is also a U.D.C. stone like the 6th street marker. It will be 70 feet south of 8th and approximately where the word street is on the map. The stone says 75 were buried there but another accout in 1937 by cemetery copyist Ingram James, said there were 100 buried there. A photograph in the book "Life, Lectures and Poetry" by Egbert Osborne in 1898 seems to show 2 more rows of markers to the east of the present final row, with 14 and 15 graves in each row that gives a total above 100. The earlier picture carries more weight according to Riverside Cemetery historian Jonathan Smith and Jack Wood. Most of the soldiers were brought from Shiloh after first being buried in mass graves there. |
