“Melody?” Aj said as he walked into the room. He glanced over at the bed, Melody was sleeping. Sighing, he walked over to wake her up.
“Mel, hun, wake up, I need to talk to you,” he whispered as he shook her gently. She stirred, then soon after opened her eyes.
“Hi,” she said quietly, a wide smile crossing her face. Seeing the smile made Aj feel even worse.
“How are you feeling?”
“Like a million bucks, how about you?”
“Worthless.”
“Aj, what’s wrong?”
“Melody, I have some bad news.”
“What?”
“I got a call from Kevin today, we have to go out of town for business. The Germany tour was pushed up; there is no way I can miss it. I leave tonight, actually, only in a few hours.” Aj watched Melody’s face as he slowly spoke the words. As pale as she already was, even more color seemed to drain from her face. There was a long silence, neither one knowing what to say.
“Are you okay?” Aj asked finally.
“I understand,” she spoke each word slowly and clearly.
“Huh?”
“I understand, and I know you have to go. It is your job, your life, your everything. When I am gone, you will still have your career, and I am not going to take away your life for one day of mine.”
“But you are my everything.”
“No, Aj, please listen. I do love you with all my heart, but I know what is right and wrong here, it would be wrong to miss the tour to spend one more day with me. These past days you have already done anything you could have to make my life special, and it was. I thank you for that, but you have done everything you could have, and you need to move on. Here, I have something for you,” Melody said and reached over to the desk next to her. She picked up a small letter, folded neatly. She handed it to AJ. “Don’t read it now, wait until you are on the plane, okay?”
“Promise,” he said, kissing her forehead. A tear slid down his cheek, as he softly began to sing.
