Aj was talking on the phone when he heard a car screech down the road. He heard the tires squeal to a stop in front of his house.
“I’ll call you back,” he mumbled into the phone, making his way to the window to see what was going on. He dropped the phone onto the couch and opened up the curtains. Aj watched Melody step out of the car and ran to the door. He quickly opened the door before she had got there.
“Melody, baby, what’s wrong?” He asked as she collapsed into his arms. Melody took a minute to try to catch her breath.
“My…parents were…going to…” she stammered in between breaths. Aj took her hand and led her to the living room. She sunk into the oversized plush zebra print chair and rested for another minute before she was calm. “They were going to take me to the doctors Aj. I couldn’t let them, if I went they would find out and everything I wanted would be ruined. It isn’t Thursday, they can’t find out already.”
“Wasn’t the point of telling them later that they would treat you normal?”
“Yes.”
“It doesn’t matter now, they already know something is wrong. Taking off and running from they won’t help the situation at all.”
“But…”
“But you still don’t want them to know, do you?” Melody looked down at Aj who was kneeling by the chair. She shook her head no.
“Could I stay here for a while?” She said, tears forming in the corners off her eyes. She had worked so hard to keep her last few days normal. It was impossible now, she knew Aj was right. She shouldn’t have run, but she did, and she didn’t want to go back.
“Of course,” he said, taking her hand in his. “You can stay here as long as you need.”
“Thanks you Aj,” she whispered, tears rolling down her cheeks. Aj lifted his free hand to wipe them away.
“Anything for my angel,” he whispered back. They sat in silence for a long time, just comforted in each other’s presence. Melody treasured every minute, every second she sat there, by Aj, her hand in his. She soon began to drift off to sleep.
“Aj?” she said sleepily.
“Yeah?”
“I just wanted to say thank you, you have been wonderful to me. I’m think I am going to sleep now, I love you,” she whispered.
“I love you too Mel,” he replied, smiling warmly as he looked over her. He kissed her on the forehead and grabbed a blanket off the couch to cover her with. Aj looked up at the clock, it was getting late. He decided to sleep on the couch, that way if melody needed him he would be right there.
The next morning Melody woke up to someone gently shaking her. She opened her eyes to find Howie standing over her. She sat up, a little surprised.
“How you feelin’?” he asked.
“Not to good,” she replied, her head pounding.
“Think you’re up to eating some breakfast?”
“Yeah, I think so.” Melody got up and followed Howie into the kitchen. Aj was sitting McDonalds out on the table.
“Mmm, healthy breakfast,” Melody joked.
“I didn’t get a chance to tell you that Howie was coming over this morning to work on a new song,” Aj told her.
“I won’t get in the way, will I?”
“No, not at all.”
“You could help us out if you want,” Howie offered. Melody smiled and sat down at the table, grabbing an Egg Mcmuffin.
“So what is the song called?” Melody asked once they had all finished.
“It’s called ‘If I Ever’, wanna hear what we got so far?”
“Aj, go get the keyboard,” Howie ordered him. Aj made a weird face, but left the room to find it. When he came back he found Melody and Howie in the living room. Melody was sitting in the chair she had slept in.
“Ok, impress me,” she told them. They played and sang the song for her, at least, what they had of it. Melody listened to Aj sing, she loved the sound of her voice. Just another thing she was sad that she would have to leave behind.
“What do you think?” Aj asked.
“Wow, that’s all I can say. That was just beautiful,” she said in amazement.
All of the sudden there was loud pounding on Aj’s door. Melody jumped out of her seat, startled. Melody watched as Aj walked over to answer the door.
