The hotel room was finally quiet. He was asleep on the plush couch with his Gameboy dangling from his fingers. His chin was down to his chest and when she stopped typing, she could hear his breathing across the room. She hated moments like this. The soft city lights bled gently through the sheers to cast warm light on him, creating an imagined halo around his angelic face. Shit. Kelly knew it wasn’t true. Only she could see this halo and had been seeing it for months now. She lifted her fingers from the laptop and quietly moved across the room to be closer to him. Kelly sat on the coffee table where his socked feet were propped up. She couldn’t help but sit and watch him. Although, what she really wanted to do was touch him. She’s had him in her arms before, numerous times, but not how she really wanted him. She wanted to press her body against him and share her most inner soul with him. She wanted to know that what she had felt that first time she saw him was real and not some girlish fantasy. Together, Kelly and Nick moved in an easy grace. He often spent several nights in her hotel suite when she was in either Orlando or Lexington. She wasn’t sure how this began. He was a hip-hop, sloppy kid in a room full of suited fundraising professionals all telling him how to distribute his money to worthy charities. When she approached Nick about working with Kevin’s Just Within Reach Foundation to blend their resources and make his Ocean’s Campaign a reality, he listened. They had gravitated toward each other and they had become “friends”. He told her more than she wanted to know at times and when he first touched her…she would always remember that moment. Thank, Kels. We couldn’t have done this without you. The feel of his young body against hers had undone her and she never looked at his carefree smile and sparkling eyes the same again. She knew beneath all of that boyish charm and baggy clothes was the body of a man. Her childish, immature girlish fantasies took over and all she wanted was to spend time with him. Nick was always there, drawing them closer and closer, until they even shared some physical intimacies. The feel of his lips on her cheek or a quick brush against her lips was pure heaven. He had found her true tender spot on the back of her neck and he would nip at it to drive her crazy. He was just playing with her and their newfound friendship, but it ignited something inside of her she had never known before. So, she continued this playful relationship with this young pop singer, although she knew she was playing with fire. The descent-sized diamond on her left hand reminded her of that. She was going to be married. Emotion gripped her heart. She knew letting him go was the best thing. There came a soft knock at the hotel door. Kelly scrambled quietly to answer it, knowing at this late hour it had to be the hotel staff. She peeked out the security eyehole and then opened the door quietly. The uniformed clerk handed her a sealed white envelope. “Sorry to disturb you ma’am. This was just delivered and it’s marked, “urgent”.” He said quietly. “Thank you.” She took the envelope and reaching into her skirt pocket to hand him a bill for a tip. “Thank you, ma’am.” He said with a nod and a smile. Kelly closed the door and secured it. She looked at the face of the envelope and recognized the handwriting immediately. It was from her fiancé. “What is this?” she asked herself softly. She turned it over and began to walk toward the bedroom, opening it as she went, trying not to wake Nick as the paper crinkled beneath her fingers. Dear Kelly, I know this may come as a shock, but I’m calling off our engagement. I’ve come to realize that I don’t love you as much as I should or as much as you deserve. I’ve accepted a new position in my company that will take me to LA. I’ll be gone from our Chicago townhouse by the time you return. Please keep the ring. I’m sorry, Steve “Oh my god!” she gasped. “No!” She sank onto the hotel bed, sitting on the edge. With trembling hands, she reached for the phone and frantically dialed Chicago, but there was no answer. She dialed his answering service, his pager and then his cell phone. It rang. Several times. “Hello?” A woman’s voice answered. “I’m sorry. I must have the wrong number.” Kelly stammered. “No, Kelly, you don’t.” Steve’s voice came across the line. “Steve? Who was that? Where are you? What are you doing?” She demanded. Her voice was shaking and she forgot about Nick in the other room. “You must have gotten the note.” “Yes, I got the note. What is going on!?!” She demanded again. “I didn’t want to tell you this, but I’ve met someone else…” “How can you meet someone else?! You’re engaged to me! You aren’t supposed to “meet” anyone else?!” “I’m sorry, Kels…” “You son-of-a-bitch! You’re not sorry at all!” She screamed. “I know you’ve met someone, too.” Steve said quietly. “What?!” She gasped. Steve didn’t know about Nick. “I know you’re seeing that singer, Nick Carter…” “I’m not seeing Nick! He’s my client and I work for him!” “Explain why he’s been in your hotel room since 5 o’clock. It’s after midnight in Orlando right now.” Steve demanded. Kelly was struck silent. She had no real rationalization for it. Nick had shown up and “hung out” while she worked. They had ordered room service and talked a bit, but he had just played one of his Gameboys until he had fallen asleep. She had a grant to write for The Sierra Club. “We…I haven’t done anything wrong…” she stammered. “I’m trying to be kind here, Kels.” Steve said. “Keep the ring. Sell it and …well, he has enough money…” “You can’t do this, Steve. There is nothing between me and Nick.” Kelly began to cry. “There is no other way. I don’t want to be with you anymore, Kelly and you don’t want to be with me. Be happy, okay?” Click. His hang up left Kelly staring at the phone until the dial tone began to blare at her. She hung it up slowly and quietly as the tears ran down her face. Kelly was going to be sick. She stood and blindly turned toward the bathroom, sobbing as she went. She couldn’t see Nick standing in the doorway through her tears. He had been watching her the entire time. She just pulled at her finger, trying to get that impossible diamond off. Nick was afraid this was going to happen, but he hadn’t been able to stop himself. He should have never flirted with her, never should have pushed the envelope with her. Now she was paying the price for his stupidity. “Kels?” He asked, knocking softly on the bathroom door. “Kelly?” “What, Nick?” She asked, trying to sound okay, but he knew she wasn’t. “I heard what happened.” He said plainly. The bathroom door opened and she threw herself into his arms. She buried her face into his tee-shirted chest and sobbed. “Oh, please, baby. Please don’t cry. I’m sorry, Kelly, this is all my fault.” He muttered as he buried his face into her hair. “No, no!” She cried, muffled against his shirt. “It’s not your fault! It’s his fault! He’s the one sleeping with someone else!” Kelly pushed past him and headed to sit on the bed. “I didn’t do anything.” “Maybe not with your body…” Nick began softly. She looked up at him with those incredible blue eyes. The pain there almost killed him. “About us, Kel…” “There is no ‘us’, Nick.” She said with a sad shake of her head. “In our hearts there is. There always has been. I felt it the moment I met you.” He said, standing in front of her in the dark bedroom. “No, Nick…don’t say it…” She groaned. Kelly rose to her feet and moved to get away from him. That was her mistake as he instantly took her in his arms. “I’m going to say it, because it’s true. I’m not sorry this happened, Kelly.” He said, pulling her into his arms. “I’ve wanted you from the moment I first saw you, but I knew I couldn’t have you. I tried not to do anything, but…Kelly, we have so much in common. We care about the same things, we think the same, we…we belong together, Kelly. I can’t tell you how much I love you.” “Love me?! Nick, you don’t even know me?!” She laughed bitterly. “I don’t? I know the woman who went to that marine rehab center with me and cried over the fate of that one harbor seal. You remember the little guy who got all cut up by the fishing nets? What about the time when you started cussing at that oil guy in Texas, hmm? What about what you feel when I do this?” Nick reached across the distance between them and snatched up her hand. He pulled her harshly against his chest and stared down into her tear-streaked face. His left hand tightened on her wrist, keeping her pressed to him, and his right hand began to rake through her hair. “You know we have something. You feel it when I touch you.” He murmured, bowing his head to meet her lips with his own. His kiss was deliberate. He stroked her and tasted her, teased her until she could feel even more hot tears damming behind her tightly closed eyes. Her heart hurt so badly, but nothing could deny the thrill and joy his touch brought her. Her sobs escaped her and she pushed him away. “You don’t know what you’re saying. What you’re doing!” She cried. “I know exactly what I’m doing!” “I was supposed to get married!” She yelled. “Then marry me!” He yelled back. “What?” She sniffled quietly. “Marry me.” He whispered, covering the distance between them. “I love you, Kelly. I have always loved you and I think I always will. No matter what.” He ran his hands up her arms, gently pulling her closer and closer and closer…until his forehead rested on the top of her head. “Trust me, I know how insane it sounds.” He began quietly. He stopped for a brief moment and breathed her clean scent in. “All I can think about is figuring out ways to be around you or get near you.” Fresh sobs threatened to break her again. She could remember all of those times. In the beginning, she wondered what he was doing, but in time she quit wondering and hoped he would never stop coming around. She thrived on the public displays of affection, the chaste kisses and tender touches. But I was going to marry Steve… “I think you’d better go.” She said, straightening herself up and stepping out of his reach. Her arms wrapped around herself to compensate for his absence. “Is that really what you want?” He asked. “Is it, Kelly? I wasn’t one-sided in this. You let me stay with you constantly.” “I was going to be married…” She quietly sobbed. “Marry me, Kels, be with me…always.” He murmured, coming close to her and pulling her into his arms. She offered no resistance, letting him hold her until she could gain control of her senses. Kelly stopped for a moment, stepped back a half step and wiped her eyes. His hands fell on hers before reaching up to clean the salt tracks from her cheeks. She looked up into his endless blue eyes as they questioned her. She didn’t want him to leave. Ever. Pure emotion drove her as her delicate fingers lifted to rest on his lips. They traced the bottom lip, until her hand fell down to her side. “Kelly?” He whispered. She looked up again and his eyes were closed. She could have sworn he was holding his breath. She rose up on her toes, slipped her fingers into his hair and drew his face down to hers, kissing him. She kissed him the way she had always wanted to, but had never been allowed. Her tongue slipped past his lips and danced with his, until her knees nearly buckled from excitement. Nick could feel her grip tightening on him and the urgency racing through her body began to race through his. She pulled away, her breath panting against his cheek and she rose on her toes to whisper in his ears. “Don’t go, Nick. Please don’t go.” “I’m not, I swear.” He groaned, looking into her eyes as she settled back on her heels and looked up at him. “Don’t go tonight.” She said, her voice dripping with untold emotion. She took his hand in hers and turned to lead him toward the bedroom. Nick wasn’t sure how his wobbly legs got him that far. At the edge of the bed with her back toward him, she began to unbutton her blouse. He watched as the silky material shimmered slightly in the filtered city light. She drew it back, exposing her creamy white shoulders and letting it drop gently at his feet. Her hands came back around, unzipping her skirt and it too joined the pool of fabric at his feet. Nick’s heart was racing and he swore he could see it jumping against his chest. She turned to face him, letting the straps of her bra slide down her arms. “No, please, wait.” He moaned. “I am doing something wrong?” She asked quietly. “No, no. God, no.” He groaned. “Nick, please, I want you here.” Her voice was barely a whisper. Her hand came out and slid under the hem of his shirt, hooking into the front of his jeans. She wasn’t looking at him and Nick could tell her hands were shaking. “Stay here and make love to me, Nick.” “Oh God, yes!” He gasped as his body shuddered at her touch against his stomach. Butterflies lurched and threatened to burst from him as one by one each button on his fly came undone. “I can’t pretend I don’t want you.” She moaned, sliding his jeans to the floor and standing to take hold of the hem of his jersey. In one full yank, she had it up and over his head and as his arms came back down to his side, her tongue lapped teasingly at his hardened nipples. His fingers dove into her hair and forced her face up to meet his hungry lips. He stepped from the fabric of his jeans, leaving only his boxer-briefs covering him. He pushed her back against the bed, until she gave under his weight and they tumbled onto it together. His mouth devoured hers and his hands tugged at the straps of her bra, wanting to free her from its confines. The delicate clasp up front gave way in his large hands and as his lightly calloused hand skimmed across her inflamed nipples she arched up against him, causing him to slip effortlessly between her legs. No amount of fabric could protect her from his straining erection. It was hard against her delicate center, rubbing against her causing flicks of pleasure and pain. She didn’t want that kind of protection. Not from him. Not from Nick. Her hand skimmed down his back and into the rear of his underwear. She pushed it down, digging her nails into his fleshy bottom. He reared up, driving himself against her and letting out an animalistic moan. “Kelly, please, please, wait…” He stammered as she pulled the fabric down, trying to unhitch it from between them. “I don’t want to wait any more.” She said, slipping her hand between him and wrapping her fingers around his length. “Oh, god, wait, no…” He continued to stammer, finally pushing himself off of her and rolling to one side. He lay there heaving, trying to catch his breath. “Nick?” She whispered. “Wait. Any more and I’m gonna lose it.” He smiled sheepishly between breaths. He picked up his legs and removed his underwear the rest of the way, tossing them to the floor. Kelly was amazed by him and how surreal it all felt, being here with him like this. “I think someone else should do the same.” He smiled wickedly. He rolled toward her and propped his head on one hand. He reached across, hooked one side of her panties with his finger and tugged gently. Not content with that, he finally stood above her and boldly reached with both hands to pull them off. They were discarded with his own. Nick moved toward Kelly, laying across her with his body until he was the only thing in her senses. He stared at her for the longest time, finally dipping his head to kiss her already swollen lips. Kelly giggled against his lips and he opened his eyes. “Yes?” He smiled. Her hands came up and ran through his hair. “I’m sorry.” She giggled again. “What?” He chuckled, insisting she answer him. “You have any idea how surreal this is? Do you?” “Yeah, I do. Trust me.” He nodded. “I have always wanted you, too, but with Steve and…” “Shhhh, it doesn’t matter.” He said, shaking his head. “Are you ready for us to do this?” “Yes, oh yes.” She agreed. “I want you to make love to me, Nick.” Nick dropped his head, until she could feel his hot breath in her ear, “There is nothing I want more than to hear you call my name. Tell me what you want, tell me what you like, tell me everything, Kelly.” Kelly’s body began to arch and twist under his touch. His mouth traced every line of her breasts, touching and teasing her until she was panting his name. Nick would ask her permission and ask for her blessings as he played her like a fine instrument. When the time came and she could no longer contain herself, she screamed his name as he lapped at her center. Kelly calmed to find Nick above her and watching her. “I can’t wait this time.” He breathed. “Don’t.” She whispered. “Come to me.” She held open her arms and he nestled himself on top of her. His arm reached down and hooked beneath one of her knees and she opened to him like a flower in bloom. The intimate feel of him nearly made her weep, as he threw back his head and danced at her entrance with an unearthly patience. “Nick, please, Nick, please…” she begged him. “I don’t want this moment to end, Kels.” He groaned. “You feel like Heaven, Kels, Heaven.” Nick’s body would go where his heart wanted, faster than he would have wanted. She arched up to meet him and took more of him in each time until she finally covered him. He finally relented to his passion and plunged deeply into her. Nick had never felt such peace and urgency at the same time. He found their perfect rhythm. It was like the tide ebbing from the shore at the bidding of the moon’s pull on the earth. It was a perfect design made by God himself. His vision tunneled, and all that was there, was her. Kelly’s body locked around his and when he realized what he had, he lost himself. Nick cried out Kelly’s name and pleaded for her love. When he finally came to rest, endless shudders continued to tremble through his body. Nick rested his head on the pillow next to her. “No one will love you as I do. Ever, Nick.” She whispered. The next hours they shared were filled with one revelation after another. New lessons learned and taught between new lovers, but old soul mates. It didn’t surprise Nick one bit during their quiet times that she would begin to talk about an environmental program in the Gulf of Mexico she was going to work on getting funded, then there was that one for the Mississippi…her passions were her own and they had nothing to do with his fame. When the sun began to break, they gently woke to the sounds of the city waking with them. Cabs honked in the distance and guests moved about the halls. Nick gave out a great yawn and a stretch; Kelly watched his body move under the sheets. “I’m starved.” He announced. “Well, I guess we could order up some breakfast.” She laughed, reaching over to ruffle his hair. “Why do you always do that? Mess up my hair?” He asked her. “I’m sorry, am I messing up your hair, Angel?” She laughed loudly, throwing back the covers and getting out of bed. “Yes, you are!” He said with fake indignation. “I pay good money to have people make me look good.” “Well, I may have found my new calling.” She joked. “I can make you looked ‘just fucked’, too.” “No, your look is different.” He insisted, following her into the bathroom. “You make me look well loved.” Breakfast was ordered and they ate through their choices laid out on the bed. Kelly finally retired to the shower as Nick picked around the suite and eventually settled down to one of his Gameboys. “Nick! The shower is all yours!” He heard her call from the bedroom. “Okay, Kels!” He answered her, setting down the game and taking himself into the bedroom. “You look good!” “I’m wet.” She chuckled as she sat her towel wrapped body on the edge of the bed. He kneeled before her and settled his hands on her knees. “Let me check.” He quirked a grin at her. The phone rang and without thinking, Nick reached over and answered it. “Yeah?” He grunted. He listened for a few seconds, and then looked up at Kelly. He took the phone away from his ear. “It’s Steve. You want to talk to him?” She nodded ‘yes’ as her mouth went bone dry. He handed her the phone and he waited a few seconds to make sure she was okay before he got to his feet. Kelly reached out and locked her fingers around his wrist, holding him so he wouldn’t leave her. “Yes, that was Nick…No, you know, Steve, that just isn’t going to work. You were right, I am seeing Nick…I just took your advice from last night when you said to ‘be happy’.” Kelly let go of Nick, stood up and hung up the phone. “I’m sorry.” He muttered. “I’m not.” She said, facing him with the biggest smile he had ever seen. “You’re beautiful when you smile, Kelly.” He said, returning the bright grin. “You’re the reason I do smile, Nick.” |
