Jean stood by the window of her little boathouse and
stared up at the mansion. There was so much sadness
there. Ro was still sitting beside the still body of
her brother. Her thoughts felt like one of her own
whirl-winds. Remy was recovering, that was good, Scott
was the supposed cause of his current state, that was
bad. Logan... Logan loved her brother, truly loved and
accepted him, that was a very good thing.
Logan broke his all too fragile heart.
She couldn't get past that.
Jean shook her head and broke contact with her best
friend, it was only adding to the migraine her OWN
thoughts brought on. She searched for Hank and found
him in his darkened office. He was so tired.
Hank felt responsible for every member of the team, it
was a responsibility no ONE person should have to
bear. The X-men weren't exactly Boy Scouts and Hank
alone, with some little bit of help from Jean and Ro,
was responsible for caring for and treating all the
broken bones, the gunshots and knife wounds, the burns
and sprains... it all fell on his wide shoulders.
He did a remarkable job.
This however, this had Hank wanting to sink to his
knees and weep. He knew more about Remy than anyone,
except MAYBE Storm and possibly Logan. He understood
Remy, he was his confidant and big brother. He had a
soft spot for the boy that started the moment they
met. It HURT Hank to see his young friend like this.
He would recover, Hank was almost certain, but the
emotional scars, added to all of the other emotional
scars, might be too much for the boy to bear.
Then there was Scott.
Hank wasn't sure which emotion would win that battle.
Was he to be pitied? Despised? Would all this be
ignored, chalked up to the stress of the job?
He was obviously sick, or possessed...but these
feelings for Logan had to have already been there.
There was no where to lay the blame for this mess but
at his feet!
Hank suddenly sat up straight in his over sized desk
chair when he sensed the gentle touch on his mind,
~ Jean? Are you all right?~
Back at the boathouse, Jean touched the window and
smiled a tiny smile, ~ I'm fine Hank. You need to
sleep.~
~ Remy's vitals are still off. I will sleep when I am
sure he is safe. It is you who should be sleeping.~
She loved Hank, she loved the rest of the team... but
their concern and attempts at conveying sympathy about
this touchy situation were driving her to new heights
of insane. That was why she retreated to the
boathouse, to be alone, to think... ~ Stop worrying
about me! I knew there was something wrong I just... I
never sensed...~
Hank nodded and she sensed that too... ~ Sleep young
lady, that's an order from your Physician.~
~ Good night Hank.~
She broke contact and sighed, she should sleep, but
there was one other victim of this bizarre situation.
She searched the hall outside the med lab and gasped.
With little more than a thought Jean Grey-Summers took
flight.
She had to stop him before it was too late!
*****
Logan struggled for a moment before he finally found
his feet. He had to get moving, but there was one last
gift he had to give the young Cajun before he left and
was out of his life forever. He had to pay a little
visit to Cyclops.
It was payback time...
Logan's step faltered when Jean touched his mind,
~Logan stop!~
He was tired, he hadn't slept since this all started
seventy-two hours before, but he has a single minded
goal now and nothing would stop him from achieving it.
He had to make sure this ended! He owed it to Remy to
make sure he wouldn't be hurt again! " Get the fuck
out o' my head Jeannie! The bastard is gonna pay!"
Jean closed in and threw open the door that led from
the gardens to the back of the mansion. She only
needed to get to the lower levels! ~ Logan, listen to
me! You can't kill him!~
" Why the hell not!" He stopped in the middle of the
wide hallway, he was shaking with rage, and other
emotions he refused to acknowledge. All he knew for
sure was that the bastard had to pay!
" He ruined my life!" He was screaming at the
invisible woman talking to him as she raced to stop
him, at the Gods up in Heaven, at anyone who would
fucking listen to him!
" He took everything I care for away!" His throat felt
raw from the force of the confession.
It was a confession, he needed to scream it to the
sky, " I love Remy, and he... he took him away from
me!"
" Logan!" Jean finally stepped from the elevator and
saw him, he felt alone, he was mad, he was tired, he
was confused...
He was scared.
Logan saw her from the corner of his eye and took
another shaky step forward. He thought of Bishop
standing at attention outside the small cell. He felt
a momentary twinge of guilt, Bishop would not move
from his post without force. He was sorry that the
time traveling soldier would get hurt.
" Logan stop!" Her hand shot out and the Wolverine
howled as his body was frozen in place by the
telepath.
" Leave me the Hell alone!"
She finally reached him and placed a hand on his arm,
" I need to talk to you... please Logan?" She looked
away from his furious face, " Logan, he hurt me too."
Logan's eyes cleared a bit, but he was still shaking
with the need to make the man pay. " He needs to pay
Jeannie. I can't see Remy, I'm goin' crazy here!
Nobody will let me near him," he dropped his head and
ran shaky hands through his hair, " For Christ's sake
Jeannie nobody ... nobody will even tell me how he is.
" His eyes told her how badly he was hurting. " I
don't even know how he is..."
" Oh God Logan, I didn't know." She pulled him into a
hug and without thinking linked him to Remy. She was
silent for the moment it took Logan to realize what
was going on. " His shields are down, he's not strong
enough right now to keep them up. That will probably
take awhile," she whispered.
Logan hardly hear a word she said, he was so caught up
in the familiar touch of his lover's mind. Soft like
cotton, warm and sweet. He was resting, totally
relaxed, whether it was natural or drugs Logan didn't
care. At the moment Remy was okay. The terrible pain
and fear that he witnessed was gone. Logan's arms
jerked up a little as if he was going to reach out and
hold the young man he could now sense with his mind.
" He's okay, right? He's only sleeping...right?"
Logan's eyes were closed and he whispered the question
as if speaking it out loud would wake the injured boy.
It was like he was afraid to hope, and Jean smiled to
reassure him. Her voice was quiet and calm, as if she
was afraid to interrupt their private moment. " He's
very weak. His vitals haven't evened out yet so Hank
and Ro are still guarding him, but he seems okay to
me." She smiled as she joined the linked men, Remy
felt safe for the moment and Logan... Logan was beyond
relieved. " You haven't lost him Logan, I don't think
you ever could."
She waited a few minutes before she eased Logan away
from the Cajun, his eyes flew open showing the
distress he felt now that he was separated from his
lover again.
" Please Jeannie, just a little longer..."
"I promise I will help you see him again, none of this
was really your fault." Her hand against his cheek
calmed him a little more. " Can we please talk now?"
Logan looked back down the hall at where he'd spent
all his time the last three days. The touch of Remy's
mind only reinforced the love he felt for the kid, but
he forced himself to turn away and look at Jean, "
Where do ya want to go?"
*****
Snikt.
"I don't get it," Logan was pacing back and forth
across the tiny kitchen of the boathouse, " Why?"
Jean sighed, why indeed. She should be furious. She
should have been the one who needed to be restrained,
not Logan. She had every RIGHT to want him dead but...
" I still love him." It came out as barely more than a
whisper.
" He used you!"
" I know that," a stubborn tear tracked down her face,
" You're absolutely right." She held her head high,
she wasn't about to let this beat her down.
" He nearly KILLED Remy!"
" Could you hate Remy? Could you honestly want him
dead? Even if he did something like this?"
" No never." There wasn't a moment of hesitation
before his answer.
Jean stood and looked out the perfect little window of
her perfect little house, " Logan..." How was she
supposed to explain this to Logan if she didn't
understand it herself. " I've been in love with Scott
since I was fifteen years old. The first time we
met... it was just like the first time you saw Remy.
Remember that feeling? Remember how you knew INSTANTLY
that you had to be with him or you would never be
complete?"
She knew he remembered, he still felt that way. " We
used to HAVE that, it used to be magic..."
She trailed off and Logan erupted, " He's fuckin'
crazy Jeannie!"
Jean searched her feelings and her heart, " I wanted
him dead. I wanted him to hurt as badly as I did... I
wanted him to suffer."
Logan nodded, " Then we agree."
"NO! No... I can't kill him."
Logan snorted and slowly let his claws show again.
" You can't kill him either Logan, think of Remy!"
He spun until he was facing the lovely red-head, "
Think of Remy? All I can DO is think of Remy! I think
of him standing in that doorway, his eyes bleeding
hurt and betrayal! I think of him so deep in shock
from witnessing..." His voice trailed off as he
thought of how it must have looked to his lover... "
He was lost inside himself for a full twenty-four
hours, afraid to face reality, afraid... afraid to
face me." His voice trailed off to a whisper, then he
became focused again. " I think of him seizing so bad
that he stopped breathing." He took a deep breath and
tried to calm down, " So you see Jeannie, I AM
thinking of Remy... Cyke HAS TO PAY!"
" He's sick Logan!" She hated defending him this way,
but the rage was gone now, replaced by an almost
maternal need to make Scott all right again.
Logan sank into a chair and dropped his face into his
hands, who was he to judge other people after what
he'd done? " All right Jeannie. You're right anyway...
Remy wouldn't want me to hurt the bastard."
Jean bent and kissed his cheek. " Thank you Logan, I
know how hard this has been on you. Thank you for
giving him this chance," She looked out the window
again, " He doesn't really deserve it... but I have to
let Charles try. Why don't you try to get some sleep,
you're exhausted. Remy may need your help for a
while."
Logan looked up at her, his eyes felt grainy and raw.
He couldn't recall the last time that had happened,
the healing factor took care of all that stuff. He was
weary now, all the worrying about his lover had worn
him down worse than fighting the likes of Magneto ever
could.
" Yer right, I'm just gonna stop by the lab one more
time, maybe..."
" Maybe Ro and Hank have finally had a change of
heart?"
" Yeah... somethin' like that. If I could just SEE
him..."
Jean glanced at the stairs that led to her bed and
then looked at Logan... the choice was easy. " Come
on, as the wife of the crazy man I think I have some
pull..."
*****
"He just wants to SEE him Hank, what harm could it
do?" Jean sat in the office across the desk from
Henry.
"I suppose it would be all right. I think it may
actually help, Remy really loves Logan. Ro will not
like it though." He tilted his huge head toward the
small ICU.
" I'll take care of Ro."
" Then you have my blessing." He sighed, and stood
when Jean stood, " I can't stand to see him like this.
I can't stand that it happened... I hope this helps
because frankly, I am out of options and I'm scared to
death. He did nothing to deserve this."
Jean walked out of the office and smiled at Logan who
was waiting just inside the main lab doors. She
entered the tiny ICU and stopped, there were so many
sounds in the tiny room. Beeps and hisses and hums...
in the middle of it all was the young man who was
suffering the most. He looked uncomfortable with the
tube down his throat and nose and the needles in his
arms. No normal sleep ever looked like this and Jean
was nearly overcome with guilt when she saw the
results of Scott's madness. " Hi Ro, how's he doing?"
Storm was startled out of a near sleep trance, " Oh
Jean, you startled me. He is resting as far as we can
tell. There has been no change, but Remy is strong...
he will survive this... he will get well." She said it
like an order, like Remy had no other choice. Being
careful of the wires and tubes she lifted his
unresponsive hand to her lips and kissed it. Her eyes
watched his face, hoping for some tiny sign that he
knew she was still there.
" Ro... Logan needs to see Remy. He needs to know that
he's okay."
Storm's eyes snapped to her friend and the blue washed
out to a cloud like white for a second before
clearing, " He is partially responsible for my
brother's condition, I do not think he has any RIGHT
to see him or know that he is okay." She heard Jean
take a breath to respond and raised a hand to silence
her. " No, I have changed my mind... go get him! Go
get Logan and let him see with his own eyes what his
betrayal has caused!"
A monitor changed and Hank was immediately in the
room, " Watch the emotions Ro... he's still sensitive
even if he's not responsive," he pet back his friend's
hair as he spoke.
" I apologize Henry, I will be more careful."
Hank checked the monitors again and left the room,
Jean continued,
" Ro... I know this is hard to understand... I can't
believe it either... it was Scott, it was ALL Scott.
Logan had no part in any of this."
" He slept wi-"
" NO! No Ororo... he was tricked. My husband is...
WAS... a smart man. He used Logan's loneliness, he
wore Remy's clothes to confuse him." God, how she
hated to have to say this all again! Couldn't they
understand how it hurt her to have to repeat this over
and over?
Ro looked back at Remy, " He loves Logan so much. I
can not imagine how he felt when he saw..." She stood
and brushed back the long bangs that always hid his
beautiful eyes. " Go tell Logan that he may come in.
Remy would want Logan here with him, I will use the
time to shower and speak to the Goddess."
Jean let out a weary sigh and smiled, " Thank you Ro."
She left the tiny cubicle and walked slowly back to
Logan, "You can go in now."
His eyes shone with moisture before he blinked it
away, " Thanks Red, I owe ya."
Now that he had permission his feet wouldn't move.
What would he find behind that door? He had no clue
how badly Remy was hurt, or if there was any permanent
damage from the sick bastard's last attack. He felt
the rage start to grow again and closed his eyes, his
lover's empathy made him extremely sensitive to any
strong feelings. Logan took a few deep breaths and
opened his eyes again. He would project nothing but
peaceful feelings to his injured lover. He would let
nothing slip but the love he had for the boy.
He looked at Jean, " I'm ready now." And with those
soft, shaky words he took the first step toward making
it up to his lover.
