Joe Lieberman:Senator Lieberman has a good record on Taiwan/China related issues, but there are too many unanswered questions. As early as 1992, Lieberman supported Taiwan's entry into the UN and other interntional agencies. However, he has been quiet on Taiwan since. Does he support Taiwan's independence and/or self-determination? He has been quiet on this issue. He has been in favor of taking a tough line on China in the past, for example on issues of human rights and copywrite protection. However, what is unknown is will be take the tougher measure of regarding China as an adversary like the U.S.S.R., or would he continue to give the Chicoms kid gloves treatment like many presidents past.

Dick Gephardt:Gephardt has a history of being tough on China. He voted no on Permanent Normal Trade Relations and believes that free trade will not change totalitarians. Of course, on this he is right. It only empowers them. Gephardt supports the sale of advanced weapons systems to Taiwan, including the AEGIS anti-missile cruisers. However, during the Clinton administration, he was quiet when Clinton was betraying the free people of Asia to the brutal Chinese.

John Kerry: Kerry's record on China is weak. He opposed liking Most Favored Nation Trade Status with China to human rights in 1994, just five years following the butchery at Tian'anmen in Beijing. His record on Taiwan is just as abysmal. He stated that the U.S. has no obligation to help Taiwan and that it is long held U.S. policy that Taiwan is a part of China. Of course, this latter part is factually incorrect. He even stated that the U.S. should not sell more weapons to Taiwan in response to the recon plane travesty back in 2001.

John Edwards: Edwards record on China is poor. He voted to give China normalized trade relations and voted to kill a bill that would mandate sanctions on China should it sell illicit Weapons of Mass Destruction. To his credit, he did send a letter protesting the arrest of an American citizen in China who was a practitioner of Falun Gong. However, this is pretty routine and he shouldn't get much credit for this one. Edwards has been quiet on Taiwan. No policy positions have been found on Taiwan to this point.
