It was formerly, a saddler's shop, extra barracks and, more recently, a trades shop. In 1995, the building was converted to a library, the Learning Resource Centre. The main floor of the two-storey building houses the book, journal, reference, and topic collections, the reference desk, computers, photocopiers, a reading room, a telephone for local calling, and washrooms. The second floor contains the video collection, library staff offices, computers, video equipment, a user-pay telephone for long distance calls, and a boardroom which can be split in two to accommodate group study. The library is open
24 hours a day, 7 days per week. Staff are on site only from 7:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, except holidays.
New cadets are introduced to the Resource Centre as part of their program. Library staff members conduct an orientation to introduce Cadets to the Resource Centre’s facilities and services. Cadets use the facilities to conduct research and complete assignments. Books and Reports - The main collection includes Canadian criminal cases, statutes, reports and books on subjects related to policing. It is classified using the Library of Congress classification system, an alpha-numeric subject code. Journals and Magazines - The periodical collection is made up of journals, magazines, newspapers and newsletters on a variety of topics. Current magazines are displayed in the reading room. Online Resources - The Resource Centre has licences for access to several electronic information databases. Click here to see the Research Databases list. Reference Collection - The reference collection includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, directories, telephone books, and other quick look-up publications. These do not circulate. Topic Files - These are also referred to as vertical files and are available only during staffed hours. Click here to view the list of Topic Files. Videos - The Resource Centre has an extensive selection of videos related to policing. Each computer workstation on the second floor is also a video viewing station. Click here to view the video list. The Catalogue - The library uses an electronic catalogue called Voyager. You can search for books in the collection by author, title, subject and keyword. It is accessible via the Internet. Click here to see the catalogue. Videos and items in topic files are not currently included on Voyager. Lists are available on this site. Click to visit Video Catalogue or Topic Files list. The card catalogue on the main floor was closed in 1989 but is still useful for locating older books and subject areas for browsing the shelves. Staff in the reference room on the main floor help cadets and other library users find the information they need to conduct research and complete assignments. Click here for contact information. Cadets and other RCMP library users can borrow books for two weeks. The reference collection does not circulate. Library users are encouraged to view videos at the Resource Centre. Topic Files can be used on site only. Much of the material in the Resource Centre is copyrighted. Library users may make photocopies provided they comply with copyright laws. Two copiers are available in the reference room on the main floor. The Resource Centre participates in interlibrary loan and document delivery processes with other libraries. This allows the Centre to obtain books on loan from other libraries for its users. The Centre also lends its items to other libraries on a limited basis. A reciprocal borrowing agreement allows RCMP Cadets and other staff access to University of Regina Library services. The library encourages cadets to use the online resources of other libraries and to visit local libraries including the University of Regina and the Regina Public Library. To see a list of Internet library sites, click here. The Resource Centre is making the transition to the electronic environment, including access to electronic Research Databases. In order to facilitate access to the diverse collection of electronic resources now available, the centre provides computer terminals for its users. Main Floor

Internet machines print to the second floor printer. RCMP account machines print to the photocopier-printers in the reference room on the main floor. The Resource Centre provides a drop fax service for Cadets. Fax cover sheets, envelopes and “To Be Sent” and “Received/Completed” in-baskets can be found on top of the Topic File cabinets in the reference room (main floor). Faxes are sent out twice daily. Urgent items can be accommodated during staffed hours. Instructions:
Completed faxes and faxes received for cadets can be picked up from the “Received/Completed” basket. Cadets can obtain student loan applications in the library. They are kept in a filing cabinet by the main collection on the main floor. Student loan information and applications
are also available electronically.
A telephone on the main floor is provided for local calls. It is located between the two Inernet computers in the reference room. Cadets typically use this phone for making appointments, making hotel reservations, and planning graduation ceremonies. It can also be used for 1-800 calls designated for this region. The telephone on the second floor is for long distance calls. It takes phone cards and credit cards. It also has data jacks for laptops. Long distance charges may apply depending on the service provider used. ©RCMP-GRC 2002
