Cats the Musical | ||||||||||
Plot Conlcuded | ||||||||||
The cats resent Grizzabella for making yet another uninvited appearance. They shun her as usual, pull away curious younger cats, hiss at her and slink away. But Old Deuteronomy gestures for them to hear what she has to say. Grizzabella limps to the center of the stage where she sings of holding on to hope, of the joy that awaits her in finding a new life. And she "mustn't give in." She falls to her face on the stage, begging for someone, anyone, to touch her in kindness, to show her some pity. She rises again and places her paw behind her back, hoping someone will give her the fond nudge which we see between the cats throughout the play: the affectionate nudge of paw to paw. As Grizzabella closes her eyes and waits, and as the other cats watch, Victoria appraoches unhindered and lovingly rubs her paw against Grizabella's. Grizabella smiles her relief. Moved by Victoria's kindness, the other cats move in to touch Grizabella in sympathy and to ask her forgiveness. Old Deut. then moves in, and taking Grizzabella under his arm, he guides her to the giant tire. The tire lifts toward a sparkling stair. Grizzabella steps upon the stair and enters cat heaven as the other cats sing "The mystical divnity of unashamed felinity!" With the Jellice Choice made and the other cats standing proudly before Old Deut., their leader makes a last address to the crowd on how to address a cat. "First your memory I'll jog and say a cat is not a dog. You bow and taking off your hat, address him as 'O! Cat!'" And here the play ends. |
