Plot Cont.
Macavity shows up yet again and the cats flee in panic. Munkustrap remains behind to protect Old Deuteronomy. As things quiet down, the cats slowly return and begin again the Jellicle Ball. The males flirt with the females and brag and show off. The females have a dance led by saucy Bombalurina.  Just as things are winding  down and the cats are settling down to sleep until the Choosing at dawn, Grizzalbella is sensed by the psychic twins and the cats burst into a frenzy of dancing. Grizzabella will not be frightened away. She makes her second appearance and sings. The other cats show the usual unkindess with the exception of the sincerely empatic few, and Grizabella limps off. Old Deut. rises and looks after her, sincerely concerned, and the cats sing The Moments of Happiness, gazing off at the moon as they all meditate on the meaning of life.

Then Gus the theater cat is led on stage by Jellylorum, an older female cat who looks after the kittens. She sings of how brillirant Gus once was and believes he should be chosen to go to the Heaviside Layer.  The old cats show Gus true affection as they rub against him and smile at him. He sings of his days in the theatre, then hobbles off stage, his paws shaking from pausy.

With Gus's departure we see a sleeping cat in the corner. He is bright ginger with yellow stripes and green eyes. He continues to sleep as the cats enthusiastically sing of him until they shout "Where is Skimble!" and he suddenly wakes in a fluster. Skimble is described as a cat who runs the rail way "more of less" because the humans there see him as so necessary and important. He is an older cat and a friend of Aparagus, the younger version of Gus.

With Skimble's song over, lights flash and Macavity makes yet another appearance. The stage is filled with evil laughter and the cats flee to its corners in terror, hiding amidst the old furniture in the junk yard. Demeter comes forward with Bombalurina and the two scan the stage, sniffing for Macavity. Once they percieve he's not there, the two begin a song of how bad and yet glorious a cat Macavity is, as if they've both had past romances with him.  It is my belief that they have, considering that Bombalurina seems to have a thing for bad boys (she goes after Rum Tum Tugger on several occasions and calls him with a sensual snarl "a beast") and that she seems to admire criminal female cats such as Griddlebone. As for Demeter,  throughout the play she seems quiet and very mysterious, as if she was haunted by something in her past. And her sudden need to describe Macavity with such admiration reveals what haunts her. Further more, when the female duo ends their song of praise for the "Napoeleon of crime," Macavity appears and tries to kidnap Demeter.

Macavity is a ginger cat with very jagged lightning strips, nasty long nails, and sunken eyes.  The sight of him is monsterous as he grabs Demeter's legs and drags her away.

Munkustrap steps in to rescue Demeter and battles Macavity.  He is wounded and rolls to the edge of the stage, where the female cats meow over him. Munkustrap's secondhand man, Alonzo,  steps in to fight Macavity but is also failed.  The rest of the cats leap forward and swipe at Macavity, driving him away.  Badly wounded, Macavity leaps to the top of the stage and slams two cords together, blowing out the electricity.

Frightened and hovering in the dark, the cats chorus sadly, "We have to find Old Deuteronnomy . . . ." for their large leader has been taken in the struggle. One light, however, has been saved and we can see Munkustrap and Demeter sharing an affectionate encounter.

After a moment, we hear Rum Tum Tugger's voice, "You ought to ask Mr. Mistoffelees, the Orignal Conjuring Cat -- there can be no doubt about that." The single light on the stage swivels onto the Tugger, who is reclining at the top of the stage among the garbage. He goes on, "Please, listen to me and don't scoff. All his inventions are off his own bat." The Tugger leaps down to continue singing of Mistoffelees, whose manner is "vague and aloof and you would think there was no body shyer, but his voice could be heard on a roof!" Mistoffelees, the small gentle black and white tom cat we've watched and loved throughout the play,  lowers onto the stage from a magic rope which disappears in golden dust with a flick of his hand.

As Tugger continues to sing about Mistoffelees, the Conjuring Cat lights up not only the darkened stage but his crush and heartthrob, the white cat Victoria. I say this because he is often seen with Victoria through out the play and this display of affection when he lights her up only confirms my suspiscions.

Mistoffelees then performs a magic trick using the sleek black cat Cassandra as his assistant. The trick successfully brings a bewildered Old Deuteronomy back. The cats are overjoyed and Deuteronomy embraces Mistoffelees as the Rum Tum Tugger continues to sing his praises.

Munkustrap appraoches Old Deut and asks his forgiveness with a gentle jesture of paw to paw. He has failed to protect their leader, after all. When he is forgiven, Munkustrap  then annouces
it is now time for Old Deut to make the Jellice Choice. The cats flock to their leader and reach to him imploringly. Old Deut is confused. He's not sure who to choose. Then Grizabella makes her last appearance.
