Gort is a medium sized market town on the Galway to Ennis Road, situated in a gap between the Slieve Aughty Mountains and the Burren to the south. The name in Irish is "An Gort", (The Field) or "Gort Inse Guaire", (Field of Guaire's Island).

To find your way to Gort from Galway city take the limerick road the N18 south.It is approximately 22 Miles (35 KM) south along this road.

From Shannon airport take the Ennis road N18 north. It is approximately 17 Miles (27 KM) south along this road.

And from Dublin take the N66 out of Loughrea heading straight for Gort.It is approximately 15 Miles (24 KM) south along this road.

Ideally located to explore the Burren and South Galway. Local places of interest include, famous Coole Park (Nature Reserve and Heritage Centre) formally the home of Lady Gregory and cradle of the Irish literary revival ; Thoor Ballylee ( Formally the home of the poet W B Yeats ) and a small museum at Kiltartan Old School , the Gregory Museum. The important monastic settlement of Kilmacduagh(one of the oldest in Europe) is 5 miles / 8 km away.

Gort has a large number of Bars and Restaurants, which are well known for their good food, hospitality and traditional Irish music.
