The Burren
This unique limestone plateau covering 116 sq miles is the home to over 400
forts from the iron age (between 500 BC and 500 AD). There are also stone
age tombs, domains and cairns that date back as far as 3000 BC.Signposted
walking trails meander through the burren which is especially beautiful in
spring when its awash with colourful wildflowers.
Aliwee Caves
The melt waters of a prehistoric ice age formed this stunning creation of
nature over 2 million years ago. The tunnel some ¾ of a mile in length is
filled with stalagmites and stalactites and an illuminated underground river
and waterfall. There are many other explendid examples of formations in the
cave including "wasps nest", "Praying hands" and the "Carrots".
Dunguaire Castle
This castle, which overlooks Galway, is a 16th century castle. From April
to September the castles colourful past of skirmishes, battles and sieges
are portrayed in a nightly medieval banquet, music and entertainment based
on songs, poems and extracts from great Irish writers. The castle has a crafts
shop and visitors shop.
Cliffs of Moher
These impressive cliffs rise to a height of 700ft above the wild Atlantic
waves and stretch for a distance of about 5 miles along the coast. These cliffs
exhibit some of the most dramatic and breathtaking costal scenery in Ireland.
Kilmacdaugh
One of Irelands most unique monastic ruins dating all the way back to the
7th century, featuring the highest round tower in Ireland, which was founded
by St. Coleman in the year 610.
Coole Park Visitor
Centre
Former home of Lady Gregory, one of the great founders and directors of Irelands
Abbey Theatre. Area includes exhibition area which depicts the natural and
literary of the site, restaurant, picnic and play area and the famous autograph
tree with carved signatures of John Masefield, George Bernard Shaw, Sean O'
Casey, John Millington Synge and Douglas Hyde, Ireland's first president.
The grounds include some of the finest examples of Irish woodland, and a nature
trail.
Thoor Ballylee
Former home to the famous Irish poet W.B Yeats in the 1920's with Ballylee
Mill. Well worth a visit for literary and scienic value.
Galway City
Otherwise known as the "City of the Tribes" offers a splendid mixture of the
old and new. It is a medieval city rich in culture. It is also a University
City, which is partly responsible for its vibrancy and love for the arts.
It has much to offer visitors, both young and old. There are several good
pubs and many cafes and restaurants, catering for every taste and budget.
