What happens when someone has a special power? What if there were many people with special powers. What if people could do magic? What if all the things we thought were fantasy possible? Would we be accepting, or fearful? People fear what they don't understand. Magic itself is a mysterious thing, by definition alone. Is it then assumed that people who can do magic understand it? I think that we must understand that a person is not born with knowledge of what they are capable of. Everyone must learn what they can do and how to do it. This is true for normal things, like driving and math, and for things paranormal, like psycho kinesis or ESP. A great number of people have ESP but do not call it such. Can we say then that ESP is paranormal? |
Perhaps it is like sex; everyone has it, but experiences it in different ways. Some never have sex, some have little good sex, some have lots of bad sex, or some mix of these. There are sex therapists and prostitutes, and there are mystics and telephone psychics. |
There is a catch 22. Because we lack the technology to detect psychic energy, most evidence in personal reports. Sure we can wow the crowds, but so can coincidences. So how do we prove that what we feel is real, without becoming circus sideshows? Must we turn to each other? Must we become a subculture? But with power comes responsibility, and when one concentrates power, it can become corrupt. |
Do we become a cult of psychics, a subculture? Or should we fight for recognition like the queer community? Are we different enough? Do we even know that we are different? Perhaps it is all in our heads. Then again, philosophers agree that the world is only what we can perceive, so if a large enough number of us feel that magic and psychic ability exist, then it does. This is however a childish way to validate the turmoil we feel because we are different. I feel like I am patronizing myself. Don't worry, you?re not crazy, there are others like you. I would prefer the cold hard facts of science. It seems less human, but more comforting. Knowledge is power, and I fear that I have no power. |
Parapsychologists try to prove and disprove the existence of psychic ability. But they use the conventional research method they were taught. But do these methods allow for the temperamental nature of the human mind. We can study how an animal learns how to press a lever, or how stress affects the health of a cardiac patient, but how do we study precognition or telekinesis. Those that have these abilities know that sometimes it just doesn't do what you want it to do. Even when one proves their ability, such as Uri Geller, does it change what people believe? Is he one in 6 billion, or can others mimic his talents? |
Is then the job of the world's psychics to teach us what we can do, to teach us what is possible and how to accomplish what we thought was impossible? We shall see. |
