The story of the Horehounds by S. Lopez It all started out when I left the Nightcaps back in 1997, I was fed up with being the roadie/guitarist/some song singing/back up vocal/Zeke Zettner wannabe motherfucker! I would bring in new songs and ideas to Bobby just to get shot down each and every time. I wrote a shitload of songs that just got shot down all the time. I had enough material to have at least 5 Nightcaps albums or more, probably more!!! What can you do? I was a big threat to the band, actually Bobby. He wasn't writing songs like I was! But it had to end and I had pretty much quit rocknroll. I did rehearse with the Pimps for a short stint and actually played one show with them before I had even rehearsed with them. What a disaster that was!!! I practically did this as a joke! I had played with them until they told me how to play the guitar solos and that's when I left!!! Really, I was never in the band! I did attempt to start my own band and tried to call it, John Doe and the Nonames, this was with Bill England on bass and Steve Fedryk on drums. We had rehearsed a couple of times and then that all just ended. From there on, I had quit rocknroll for almost 4 years! I was still writing songs. I had graduated college in 1998, got a full time job and met some chick in 1999, got engaged, we broke up and I went into a big depression and started writing country songs because I was in a Hank Williams sr. mode of writing. Oh boy, was this depressing, it goes on... These country songs started into becoming rockabilly songs, I started getting in the roots of music such as Carl Perkins, early Elvis, Buddy Holly, Johnny Burnette trio, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and many others. Rockabilly was pretty much my thing! I slicked back my hair, had the two tone shoes, flame guitar, tuxedo jackets, etc. It did get kinda old after awhile. I needed really to rock out again. So I started buying music again, like the old punk rock and rocknroll music I had been rockin' out to for years. It was a release! I wanted to start a band, but I didn't know anybody! I didn't know where to start and I didn't have the motivation. The motivation was to kick in when I talked to Silas (Black Lung records) and he had told me that Barry Johnson(drummer from the Candy Snatchers) had passed away. Silas proceeded to tell me that Steve Baise (Devildogs) had moved to Virginia and was going to run Cybersounds studio in Chesapeake where I had first recorded with the Nightcaps. This motivated me alot! I was writing songs again. I had the writer's block for some time and I couldn't write rocknroll songs. Well, finally I started writing songs again, good songs, fun songs, rocknroll songs!!! I wrote songs and recorded them on 4 track. I had started hitting the bars again tryin' to talk some guys into playing in my band. I had seen the Shunts, this band that Witt was in and thought it was alright. I tried to talk him into it, he seemed into it, but I didn't quite know for sure. Then I talked to Erico and gave him a tape and suggested that I play rhythm guitar for him if his band backed me up. That was never to happen at all. It just seemed that if you're not in a band, nobody really gives a rat's fuckin' ass!!! Well, I finally talked Witt into doing this and he talked to his drummer, Ash and we tried to practice where he had practiced with the Shunts. That happened for awhile and then all of a sudden it didn't, so I put up adds for a drummer and bass player for a 3 piece rocknroll band. Witt had seen this and said some things to me. So I talked to an old friend of mine, Alex and he knew a drummer and we started jamming in this rehearsal place in Ocean View. The Nonames was starting and we only practiced 3 songs. I knew that this wouldn't work out because they wanted to play in churches. Ya see, Alex is a born again Christian, which I don't really know what the fuck that means!?! But he would look at my set list and question it and I really didn't really care what the fuck he thought! He would say stuff like, I hope you know we can't play yer song, "Big Fuckin' Tits" in a church! I would say back to him, "I know, my songs are for drunk chicks at the bars!!!" So, one day when we were rehearsing, Witt and Josh came by. They were both tore up and fucked up on dope or something or both of something. Witt grabbed a guitar and wanted to play. Yeah, Josh had been bugging me about playing bass and I didn't know he played bass, so I questioned it all the time. We had talked to Missy who played with the Strap-ons and she pretty much sucked on bass. Josh was the better choice. Yeah, he had been buggin' the shit outta me, callin' me on my cell phone, callin' me at home, callin' me at work! Geezus!!! But, it ended up being the best thing to happen to the band. Well, before anything had started happening, me, Josh and Witt had gotten together at Witt's place to learn the songs on guitars and bass. This really helped us alot and got us really tight even though Josh would forget everything!!! When we finally got to doing that, we started jamming with Ash at the rehearsal place in Ocean View. This was the birth of the Horehounds. Witt and Ash leaving the Shunts or pretty much the Shunts just breaking up was like Johnny and Jerry leaving the New York Dolls and forming the Heartbreakers!!! *footnote*Nonames to Horehounds It all happend one day when I was jamming with The Nonames, Alex on guitar/bass and Henry on drums. We were at Mindwerks jamming out in the summer of 2001. We were puttin' stuff down on 4track. I think I had mentioned to a friend where we would be jamming at and they actually came by. Josh and Witt! They were really both doped up! It was like they just busted in on our rehearsal. Which they did actually! We actually did some songs as a 5 piece band with me singing and everybody playin' instruments! It was cool! That was funny to me! And at that time, I knew that the Nonames wasn't gonna last! This was almost like a passing of the torch. Here I had 2 people who wanted to jam and then play songs at a church and then 2 junkies come in who I've known for years and they were into the music and could play. Well, I didn't know Josh could play bass, I knew Witt could play guitar! Witt obviously took me seriously! He learned the songs that I had given to him on tape and then it was his job to find me a drummer and bass player! He found a chick bass player, but she really wasn't a bass player due to the fact that she played for the add-ons and all you have to do is just show up with equipment or actually, the equipment is optional! Witt had his doubts about Josh, but we did practice a bunch and got the shit going! All we needed was a drummer! During this time, the dismay of the Shunts was here. I had gone to their rehearsals lookin' to recruit people. Ash was my first choice and it was convincing him and we would have a band. He was serious about the Shunts. The Shunts weren't too happy about me being there. Ash actually recommended Barry to play drums! We would get up there and jam while they took breaks! From then on, the band just seemed to fold. Nobody was into it anymore! I pretty much got the scraps from that band, Witt on guitars and Ash on drums and Josh had said to me that he would play bass. I didn't know he could play bass and it goes back to the spring of 2001 when he approached me at a Nightcaps show. He wanted me to start up a band and he told me he would play bass. I didn't think much of it and then he kept calling me and buggin' the hell outta me. I finally found some people I thought would wanna play and it was after my 4 year break from rocknroll. I had been writing songs that whole time, but not much rocknroll! But the uprise of Steveland studios and the remnants of the Nonames which the new band didn't like and then I came of with The Horehounds, I was ready to start playing rocknroll again! It was a great feeling, but it was all up to me. If I wanted people to play my music, I needed someone to direct the music part which was Witt. He learned all the songs and parts and pretty much told people what to do! That was really good, because I didn't want any part of it! I was just there to sing and play guitar! And pick these fuckers up, drive them to the practice space, yada, yada, yada, we started playin' out after 4 rehearsals! The three without a drummer rehearsed religiously for awhile before the drummer showed up! But the rest is history! After 3 rehearsals, we had our first show with the Apostles and Runarounds at Cogan's! It was a great show. We started doing some shows even outta town, like Charlottesville with the Candy Snatchers and the Dirty Fingers. A whole lotta unpaid shit going on here! We had a show at Cogan's which was to be the last show with Witt. This was a bad night in all! Jones city!!! Well, I thought we sounded good, but the night was just so strange, full moon outside! But as the story goes, we got paid very little and the money was given to Witt and I had asked him outside the bar who had the money and he told me Josh had the money, so I went back into the bar and come to find out Witt had the money. I chased Witt for 3 blocks down Manteo and he just kept running. Then I proceeded to call his home phone to fire him from the band. Now we are a 3 piece band, my original plan from the start! We went into the studio to record 13 songs and $550 later, we still need to get a final mix of the songs so that we can git this shit on some vinyl! But I think it's gonna werk out as a 3 piece dinner here! Josh is writing songs and he and Ash are going to sing more! We just all need to learn how to harmonize like the Beatles and sing in the right key and then we'll git the shit together!!! The story goes on... Where is this shit going? To git somebody to put out a fawkin' record(s) for us!!! Rapid Pulse, RockinEBones and whoever the fuck has the money!!!!! To play shows to get some kinda income going and to pay my ass back for footin' all the cash in the studio and some other shit!!! Record more shit in the studio at Steveland! and git Phil Spector to produce the album!!! Get drunk, get paid and get laid!!! In that order!!! Sambonerocknrollmofo in ITALY!!! Bye GP From: UMedPunk@aol.com Date: Sun, 17 Feb 2002 07:12:52 EST Subject: Re: horehounds To: LopezSV@evmsmail.evms.edu Hi Sam, Sorry it took me awhile to get back to you. I like the cd alot! Very rocknroll. Reminds me a bit of the Mullens if you know them. I played it a few times when it arrrived and thought "this is pretty cool-not sure if I'd wanna put it out though". I put it to the side for a few days and when i went back to it I liked it even more. Most importantly I remembered all the songs. I can't tell you how many records I get that are really good- great sound and everything, but I'll play it five times and the sixth time would have a really tough time telling if I had heard it before or if it was an entirely new batch of songs. So yeah, I'd be up for a 7" if you are. Are all the songs available? Ideally I'd like to make it a 3 songer. One track on the A-side and 2 on the B. You probably know-the Birdman cover is listed, but not on the cd. I was thinking maybe song #1 or 2 as the A-side and 3 & 4 as the B. Ex-Sex Thing is probably my favorite. Whatever though. The only thing is that right now I am super busy. Getting the records done is no problem. However it would be a big help if you guys can do the artwork for the sleeves yourselves and just send me the disc or whatever and I'll get them printed up from that. If you can't do that it's not a problem. You can send me pictures or ideas that you have and I can work something up. That will probably take a lot longer though. Lemme know what you think. Jim Hey Sambone, Just got back from a week in L.A... In a shocking developement, the Horehounds record is completely sold out! I'll press up another 100 copies and they should be done in about a month. They should be a good bit cheaper this time as all I have to pay for is the vinyl. There's plenty of sleeves and labels left over from the first pressing. How many do you think you can use if they're about $1.25 each? Turbonegro are coming around here too. I have to find out about tickets today 'cause I think Queens of the Stoneage are pretty popular. I barely even know who they are.... Jim RP AtAll 18 : HORE HOUNDS Wow! Alright!! Another great east coast power trio that knows it's DEVIL DOGS, and struts around like it's got Andy G's cock and Steve Baise's nuts swingin' from it! Great solid catchy blasts of pure rocknroll for tainted minds like ours. Just when you think you've heard a great rebound-sex song, "The Ex-Sex Thing (is the next best thing)" sets you straight and locks in at 'classic' status. The HOREHOUNDS are here for you if you're needin' 'em. MRR - (JH) "No Time For You" starts off like a snotty DEAD BOYS tune, but quickly moves into a DEVIL DOGS inspired offerring (not surprising since Crazy Stevie stokes the keys on the tune). Actually, that whole Devil Dogs vibe runs throughout the disc, although they are a little tougher not nearly as suave. If The Devil Dogs weren't constantly getting laid (which they were...it's a fact), they probably would've sounded like this. Not too shabby. (MC) Amp Magazine Some of you Nawfuckians and other fuckfaces in general out there with muy bueno taste should be aware of Head Hound Sambone Rock 'N' Roll Motherfucker from his stint in Big Bobby And The Nightcaps. An excellent hybrid of The Pretty Things and The Real Kids, the 'Caps kept my pitcher pouring in at least five venues that are now defunct. Reassuming the role as a guitar great, Sam has added lead vocals to his repertoire in the 'Hounds. Along with bassist Josh and drummer Ash (who once was behind the kit for Buzz-Oven, if you can belee that), the band's three cuts here offer the controlled power of Radio Birdman, the sleaziness of The Devil Dogs (Steve Baise produced this slab), and the spare-change riffing of John E. Thunders. The Ex-Sex Thing (Is The Next Best Thing)Eis, in the words of Sambone, about fucking your ex-girlfriend.EOh YeahEcould be an invitation of sorts, but No Time For YouEis certainly RSVP for stay the hell away. (blankgeneration.com) blankgeneration.com back to main page RAPID PULSE RECORDS is the label started by Underground Medicine in the summer of '97. So far we have concentrated on our favorite format-The 7" 45 rpm record. We do mean 45's-33 rpms suck for 7"s! Even our lone lp spins at 45. In the future, we may do more full-lengths:lp's and cd's, but for now we're stickin' with singles. Just like the Ramones; we have always subscribed to the theory that less is more. 2 or 3 song singles are perfect. 4-songers are ok in certain circumstances, but beyond that-forget it! We try and stick with varying degrees of Punk RocknRoll. Some releases are a bit more pop or garage or whatever than others, but we try to keep them all infectious and pogo inducing! LATEST NEWS: Nikki Corvette madness is in full swing! The colored vinyl copies are long gone. If you really want one you'd better start checking ebay. Chances are it'll be pretty tough to come by, most of them went to our regular customers who wouldn't part with them at knifepoint! Now maybe if you hold your breath long enough, we'll be able to get her on the road... The Horehounds record is temporarily out of stock. We'll have a second pressing done in a month or two... There's a bunch of new reviews posted for Barse, Nikki, Saviors and Inversions so check 'em out... It looks like we'll have the Sleazies record ready for their May east coast tour. Where else can you go to hear some rocknroll fuckin' music with no soundman, yep, you gotta it, Cogan's! Anyways, first up we have Norfolk's own, as Larry says, "Norfolk's last hope for rocknroll!" The Horehounds! Okay, I'm in the fuckin' band, but I'm gonna review it as if I was actually watchin' the band! Well, I was watchin' the band and listening to them and they sounded like shit in my opinion! But for the amount of practice, NONE and the equipment they bring to the show, NONE, they pulled off the set list of some tunes off their upcoming ep on Rapid Pulse records and album coming out in cd format on DUI records and vinyl on Rockin' Bones records this summer! Enough of the band plug! Anyways, they did two songs that weren't on their usual set, but the boys were ready to play them and were very shocked and still managed to pull it off! Songs like "Used, Abused and confused" which they hadn't played in awhile and the Outsiders, "Time won't let me" which was kinda brutal. But for the amount of practice, NONE, that they have, they managed to pull off a mediocre set of rocknroll fuckin' tunes! Next off, we have all the way from North Cakalakey, The fuckin' Runarounds!!! They fuckin' rocked the fuckin' place as they always do anywheres!!! I just don't know how Johnny Psycho can see when he plays the guitar!!! He is truly amazing! And they have a new bass player added to the line-up, Johnny's girlfriend, Angela, who in my opinion fits the band better than Robert Katherman AKA Big Bobby or as Johnny refers to him as "Big Bopper!" Well, Angela can play her ass off and she's a whole lot easier to look at than Bobby!!! Short skirt, she's sooo hot!!! Lemme stop!!! The band played some tunes off their album, Easy action and rocked out some more new tunes I hadn't heard that also rocked the fuckin' place!!! I had heard a tune they recorded at Steveland called, "Out drinkin' again!" and I kept yellin' at Johnny to play this song and they did and I think beer sales went up about 20 percent!!! Actually, I think beer sales went up about 30 percent when the Horehounds got off the stage and Angela got up on stage!!!! The Runarounds then busted into the Ziggy Stardust tune, "Suffragette City" and it fuckin' rocked! This is all I have to say about the show as a whole, "Wham, bam, thank you, ma'am!!!!" This show gets a 2 thumbs up and a $30 bar tab!!! Fujiwar, The Horehounds and The Gonowheres @ Matt Malloy's in Virginia Beach, Virginia, May 11th, 2002 Alright, it's Saturday night, nothin' to do and there's a show in Virginia beach off of Virginia beach blvd behind some trailer park called Matt Malloy's formerly St. Pat's which was formerly O'leary's which will probably end up being a fuckin' Eckerd's someday if this name change keeps up! Well, I get to the bar and with this place I've never been to, there's no free beer or discounted beer for nobody! Which makes for a real shitty night, if you ask me! That really sucks! It should be complimentary for bands to get free beer! They had some cheap brew that they had in this refrigerator of all this imported shit that probably fell off a truck!!! Some beer called Shiner which looks like it from a different country, but it's made in Texas!!! It's got a label on there that tells you how to pour yer fuckin' beer!!! It's already sad that the bands ain't gonna make jack shit for cash in the first place and the splittin' the door between 3 bands and then ending up tryin' to split taco bell money to the band members! Anyways, let's get to the fuckin' music here! First off, we have this band from Nags Head, North Kacalacky, called Fujiwar. These guys were very tight and had their shit together. Real fast songs which reminded me of NOFX and other Fat Wrecks or Lookout bands. The lead singer and bass player were tradin' off on the vocals which in my opinion to play this kinda music, everybody should sing like the gang chorus parts for your back up vocals! They had many songs very short and very fast! I'm not really into their music, but it was very fast and tight and together! Then you have the Mighty ighty Horehounds from sewers of Norfolk! What can I say about this band? Well, many fuckin' things!!! Well, first off, the bass player shows up with nothing in his hands and jumps up on stage! This makes for NO loading and unloading of equipment! ROCK STAR!!! Well, at least the music sounded alright for a band that never practices! At least in my opinion! Well, the Horehounds didn't really fit the bill that night due to the fact that most of the crowd was there to see the band, Fujiwar! It just didn't fit, Punk, then Rocknroll, and then Punk again! But for what it was, hey, what the fuck can you do? Yeah, it was hard tryin' to work the crowd and nobody really seemed into it when the Horehounds were up on stage, except for this guy who comes out to see the Horehounds pretty much all the time and he's right up front stage rockin' out at every show!!! But the show was recorded live on tape and hopefully it comes out! Oh well!?! Last, but not least, the Gonowheres from their hometown of Virginia Beach! Well, these guys I've never heard before, but on a compilation put out by Steveland whereby they performed the song called 'Super V8'! I waitin' through their whole set to hear this song! They band kinda reminded me of the Supersuckers with the bass player singing the songs! Great songs and the band was tight and altogether! All in all, it sounded to me like that first and last band actually have rehearsal space and practice alot and have equipment! The Horehounds, The Dirty Fingers, and The Candy Snatchers @ Swingers, Richmond, Virginia on Saturday, June 1st, 2002 Ok, big city Richmond, the fuckin' capital of Norfolk, I mean, Virginia! Who gives a fuck!?! Trendy town, USA! How do you get a fuckin' beer here if you ain't got a tattoo on yer neck or yer fuckin' scrotum sack pierced!?! Who cares, right? Well, there was a cooler filled with some Milwaukee's Beast awaiting my arrival! Ok, there was a Nashville Pussy show going on around Richmond at the same time! Ya know, a band with this name and a hot redhead chick with big boobs, hey, where is everyone gonna be at? Who knows?!?! First up we have the Horehounds out of Norfolk, Virginia playin' the first set! Yes, this night was better than the night before at Bennigans with a fried PA system! The only difference tonight, we had some beer, free beer unlike that of Bennigans (Batterson's, if you ain't got the clue yet!) 3 beers per band! That's so fucked up! Anyways, the Horehounds blasted into a 3 song medley of with the opening song sung by Josh, the Stalker, the song! And then immediately going into the 2 songs off of their brand new fuckin' single on Rapid Pulse Records! The set was quick and to the point due to the fact that the soundman was so fuckin' lazy and horsedickin' around with his own mic like he was gonna start rappin' with the fuckin' bands or something! All in all, the set was quick and to the fuckin' point and honest rocknfuckin' roll! Second, we have the Dirty Fingers out of Charlottesville, Virginia! This show for them was a redemption song of some sorts due to the fact that they played the night before at Bennigans with no PA! Their set seemed to be really short as well, but I especially like the songs I've heard before Suck as 'She's a slut' and 'Only perverts'! Now, these songs are like anthems to my fuckin' life! Because only perverts dig rocknroll! I remember back in the day when Scotto, the guitar player, was first startin' out on guitar And now he's a bad motherfucker! Last but not least, we have the Candy Snatchers of Norfolk/ Virginia Beach, Virginia! These guys usually put on a great show and they did! It's always nice to see the band in the most original form as it will ever become with Willy Johns back on bass! And of course, the back beat beatnik on the drugs, I mean, drums, pounding away a beat and then lookin' like he's gonna pass out from heat exhaustion! Great show, I think whenever the Candy Snatchers play, the beer sales go up about 15%! All in all, the show was great and it was a great bill to have these 3 rocknroll bands last night! I'd also like to mention that there were many hot Richmond chicks last night as well! WHOO HOO! Boobies!!! Cobra Spa, The Horehounds, The Strap-ons @ The Seaman's club, Norfolk, June 7, 2002! Ok, it's Friday night and there's no Cogan's and we've gotta go out to the Seaman's Club and hear a band play, just as they would at Cogan's! Well, it was like we were in another country like in south east asia and some chick was gonna serve me up a beer in a rickshaw!?! But it was a great show due to the fact that it wasn't like Cogan's, but there still wasn't a sound man! What can you do? Pretty much nothing!!! Oh fuckin' well!!!! First up, we have the local band, Cobra Spa, led by what I've been told, 'Rocknroll Joe', but I don't think he even likes to be called that! But there was alotta original rock songs with some wah pedals reminding me of some Supersuckers to my mind! It looked to me that the drummer was sitting very high on his stool and like he was just too big for his drum kit almost like Collin Coates on a K&K toy drum kit!!! But they rocked out some original tunes as a Norfuck band should!!! It would be better to hear some vocals on a better level, but they still rocked! Second up, we have the lone lost los Horehounds from Norfolk, fuckin' Virginia! This band never practices, but still manages to pull off tunes from their up coming album and 45 release on Rapid Pulse records which can be found and purchased at Skinnies records in Norfolk. These guys can belt out shit like it's going outta style and still have time to suck down some fuckin' beers and sound alright in their set!!! The all time kicker was the dedication song to the late Great Dee Dee Ramone, known to his mother as Douglas Colvin! The band played 'Chinese Rocks' in honor of the only reason why the Ramones ever fuckin' existed in the first fuckin' place! Oh well. 'Chinese rocks' is a fuckin' hard song to screw up, but we had the Apostles' choir and Vic Demise and even Fresh Rags' hardcore Holly on the vocals with the tribute to the king, Dee Dee king that is! Last but not least, we have the Strap-ons featuring Ash Horehound on drums due to the fact that the Strap-ons own drummer or drummer(s) flaked out on them at a show! Pretty fucked up if you ask me!!! How can you have 2 drummers and not one of those loser motherfuckers can show up to a show!??!??!?!?! What are they the fuckin' grateful fuckin' dead or something? Who the fuck knows? Ash pulled it off as he does with all his drumming! But Kate was lookin' good!! I must say!!! OOOHH WEEEEE! The Horehounds No time for you 45 Okay, I play in this band too! Well, this is my first attempt at rocknroll since I left the Nightcaps! Well, all three songs are about my ex- and 1 was written while I was in the Nightcaps! But I had Steve Baise play piano on No time for youEbecause we had many people tryinEto figure out the piano in the studio! What a mess! But the songs rock and its on wax, so check it the fuck out!!! Steveland Compilation Vol. 2 This is a compilation with more bands such as the Tinglers from Michigan, The Jet Boys from Japan, The Horehounds from Norfolk, The Dirty Fingers from Charlottesville, Virginia, and many more!!! Check it out! conversation about the Candy Snatchers! ScreamApp: too much rock, too less roll Horehounds: I hear ya! ScreamApp: and I dont like the singers voice Horehounds: wow, he's got a great voice, sounds like Rick Sims of the Didjits! ScreamApp: dont like his voice either. Sorry, man Horehounds: I hear ya! Horehounds: what about mine? ScreamApp: Yours is AWESOME!!!! LOL No, yours is pretty cool. I like it! anyway, gotta go. Talk to you soon Horehounds: laters! The Horehounds, The Dirty Fingers, & The Candy Snatchers @ The Tokyo Rose, Charlottesville, Virginia, October 2001 Okay, back up to Charlottesville to the Tokyo Rose! This time I rented a car and we drove up in style! I had to take the Scorehounds up to the U of VA to play a show! Well, we got there and I played my clear Ventura Dan Armstrong Copy! It sounded killer! We pulled off some old songs I used to do with the Nightcaps, such as "My First Car" and "Big Fuckin' Tits"! Next off, we have The Dirty Fingers, Goose, a former Nightcap who formed a band with Scotto Blotto who played with the Halfways of Richmond, Josh from the Hillbilly Werewolf and Tony from Richmond! They pulled off a great set! They did an encore of the same set as well! Lastly, we have the Candy Snatchers! Steve Baise filled in on the bass! They pulled off the Stones like Rocknroll as they do every time they play! They even did, 'Jumpin' Jack Flash'! Let's get to the after hours party, shall we!!! Well, here we are drunk in a city in virginia and in a rental car following some people to a party by which the chicks in the house wouldn't let all these fuckin' guys in the house! There were many people outside and it was fuckin' cold as shit outside! GEEZUS! I said, 'Fuck this!' Me and Ash just fell asleep in the car! Hours later, everybody was fuckin' gone! Here we are, in fuckin' Charlottesville and drunk in a rental car and we don't know where the fuck we are! So fuckin' Josh calls me on my cell phone cussin' me out for leavin' him in Charlottesville! We finally come to Goose and Creepy Scott's house and pick up those losers! So we leave and we're approachin' Richmond and we're all hungry and I agreed to take the Scorehounds to, where else? THE GOLDEN CORRAL!!! Yeah, we got there at 7am and we were like the first fuckin' people to get there! So were all eatin' there and I had to take a shit real bad and Ash sez, "Where are you going? to take a shit?" And I said to him, "You ain't never been to a buffet before?" The Factory Playboys, The Horehounds, & The Candy Snatchers @ CRUZERS, Norfolk, Virginia, Friday, July 26, 2002 Friday in hot ass July, but it wasn't really that hot that night! On the Cruzers flyer for Friday night, July 26th, Factory Playboys, Horehounds + Guest! Any fuckin' ways, this place was formerly called the Seaman's club! Now it's called Cruzers! Whatever the fuck that means!?!?!? I don't care, my beers were free and I got drunk!!! And dude, I'm not even into asian chicks and I was totally diggin' the Asian persuasion chicas!!!! Oh yeah! First up, we have the Factory Playboys, 2 of them of which were part of Big Bobby's flyin' circus and formed this stint. Actually, come to fuckin' think of it, every fuckin' band that played tonight had 2 nightcaps!!! But in this band, you have the original nightcap, Gordo and the rhythm guitar player, Jim Buck! They have hooked up the two guitar attack with many many many covers such as my favorite Sonics song, "Dirty Robber" taught to them by, of course, Big Bobby! They also pulled off many Kinks covers as well as a Chocolate Watchband song, "Are you gonna be there (at the Drive in?)". It was cool to hear that song! It was amazing to see Gordo with a pedal board of effects for his guitar sound when Big Bobby used to tell me stories on how he would never even step on the Fuzzface pedal that Bobby purchased for him! Well, the chick from Quang-T came up to me and told me that she liked the review of the show they did one time and I put 2 and 2 together and came to realize that her man who plays bass for Quang-T also plays drums for the Playboys! Well, when I saw Quang-T, he was playin' guitar because their guitar player quit and they were lookin' for a guitar player and then Collin quit on drums! But I do think they're still lettin' this thing go on, sound familiar to you? Sounds like the fuckin' Strap-ons carnival of freaks! Nobody stays in that band! You try it, you get on the webpage and then you quit! Like a bad habit! Secondly, we have the Sambone and the Diabetics, I mean, The Horehounds! Okay, hey, I'm in this band and I'm reviewing the show! Hey, I'm a blind motherfucker and I couldn't see shit! Well, I was also a drunk motherfucker and I couldn't play worth a shit as well! But what can you do? I don't know, yer askin' the wrong person! Hey, I was there to get drunk, play music and have a great fuckin' time as I do every time I go out and play music!!! We had Greg Unapostlebomber on the back-up vocals especially on his jam, "Rock out" and "She's all mine! Hey you guys, The Horehounds single is out on Rapid Pulse records, go out and buy the motherfucker, it's at Skinnies Records store on 21st street in Norfolk! Or if yer a cheap motherfucker, I'll make you a tape and if you want a burnt cd, just ask me and I'll hook you up for a small fee of course!!! Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that Ash played drums for the Nightcaps! Finally, we have The Candy Snatchers and before I forget, Matt played Guitar in the Nightcaps after I left and Serge was the original drummer for the Nightcaps! Okay, "we the people from Norfuck, have no equipment, we borrow and share equipment, drink to get drunk, play music and rock the fuck out!!!!" It was fuckin' cool to see Matt play his double neck Danelectro! It was like fuckin' seein' Jimmy Page play 'Stairway to heaven'!?! It was cool! Light a fuckin' lighter! It looked to me that fuckin' Serge was dyin' on the skins! But they pulled it off! I think they did some new songs as well, I couldn't tell, the PA wasn't that loud at all! It's great to have Willy Johns back on the bass! Now they are about 3 quarters the original band! All in all, the show was great! I had a great time! I played, got drunk and made it home alive! And I woke up this morning and had a fuckin' headache from hell and that only means that I had a great fuckin' time the night before!!!! WHOOO!!!!!! The Horehounds, The GoNoWheres, The Unabombers @ Cruzers, Norfolk, Virginia, Friday, August 2, 2002 Alrighty, I had a bad week at werk, actually at both jobs! One job was just kinda shitty and the other job fuckin' cut my hours because they hired some new motherfuckers who'll end up fuckin' quitin' anyfuckin' ways! Oh fuckin' well! But I get home on Thursday due to the fact that I didn't have to work the part time night job and I go to take a nap and my phone rings off the hook and I didn't answer it because I didn't wanna get charged for usin' my cell phone because I get some free time after 7pm! Ok, cheap, no, I'm poor! There's a fuckin' diffrence between cheap and poor, poor means you ain't got the fuckin' money to begin with and cheap means you've got the fuckin' money, but yer cheap ass don't wanna spend it!!! So I get the call from the drummer and he tells me we're playin' this show at Cruzers with the Unabombers and the Grownohairs! Well, originally, Lostribe was suppose to play the show, but I guess they cancelled! They would've fit right in at Cruzers! Okay, first up we have Norfolk's own, The Horehounds! I'm in the band, once again and I'm reviewin' this band and show, why, because I'm in the band and because it's for the zine, my zine and because I can, fawk it!!! Well, it was a proud day, night, rather for the Horehounds, because this was the fuckin' best I've heard 'em sound in years and it's like the year anniversary of this band and we've stopped practicing in February 2002! The songs sounded great, very few mistakes, but I'm totally pleased with this fuckin' show! I didn't get totally shitfaced like I did last friday! Good job, Horehounds! Secondly, we have The GoNoWheres, from Virginia Beach, as I have heard them called the Grownohairs and the lead singer/bassist called them, The Gonadhairs! Well, they pulled off a great set! Songs were very tight and the drummer sounded like he needed to get some frustrations out because he was beatin' on the drum set like he was tryin' to kill somebody! I especially like the song, 'Super V8' because it's the only recorded song of theirs that I've heard and it's catchy, "Super V8, Super V8"!!! Lastly, we have the Unabombers from P-town, I take it! They pulled off a great set as well! The best part was hearing the in-between-songs dialog! It killed me when they went into the whole 'Vinnie Barbarino' stint! That was great! And they went into an oldies tune, 'Tears on my pillow' which was in my opinion, pretty cool! Did I mention that Greg Wise sang backup vocals with the Horehounds on the song, 'Rock out'? Well, he did and I'll quote him on this matter, Duuuuuuuuuuuuude, 'Rock out' is my jam!" Well, I wrote 'Rock out' because I was tired of hearin' this chick at work sayin' 'Rock on' all the time like she fuckin' had a Beta tape of Wayne's World shoved up her fuckin' ass and it made her cool!?! All in all, it was a good night for me and I hope for anyone else! Rock on, I mean, Rock out motherfuckers! Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude!!!!! JRSS, The Horehounds, The Dirty Fingers @ Cruzers, Norfolk, Virginia, Friday, August 30, 2002, The Dirty Fingers Record Release Party! Alright now, its Friday, its raining and it sucks, but at least it wasnt scorchinEhot for the next to last day of August! Who gives a rats ass!?! Anyways, we have the another show at the Cruzers which I have dubbed, Cruzers is for boozers!Eamp;nbsp; Another night at the flip bar and suckinEdown some free beer as I was DJing, if thats what you wanna call it due to the fact that the regular DJEwas outta town! My first experience at this shit! I guess it was alright, I played some good rocknroll from my burnt cd collection as usual! Well, this night was suppose to be special due to the fact that it was the record release party for the Dirty Fingers from Charlottesville! It was also the one year anniversary for the Horehounds and it keeps getting worse with time! And also, we had the JRSS debuting their first show ever with the comeback of ex-band members of the Strap-ons, GoNoWheres, Nightcaps and Secrets, fuck, lets put the Devildogs, Vikings, Pearl Schwartz, Waldos, Sonny Vincent, and the GoToHells! Anyways, first up, we have the debut band from Norfolk and Virginia Beach which was my lead singing debut and this band practices in Chesapeake! Thats a happy medium!?! Hey, what do you expect? Rocknfuckinroll baby, thats what you get! We have Justin on the Fender Jazz Bass and Rich on the Pearl export drum kit, Stevie on the Hot Pink Gibson SG thru a Marshall Lead Series 100 watt head and then theres Sam on the vocals and maracas!!! There was a song dedication to the dead Ramones, Joey and Dee Dee called The End of the RamonesEwhich the lyrics also happen to be in the first issue of The DIRT! The cover of the Dead Boys tune, Caught with the meat in your mouthEwas also a crowd pleaser as well! Due to the poor lighting at Cruzers, the guitar player, Stevie had to use a lighter to help him see his tuner as his guitar went outta tune and he had to tune up!!! The JRSS finished up with a song dedicated to every chick who is a golddigger, hence the song, GolddiggerE Maracas were used in this song, but probably not heard at all! Hey, the good thing about this show, I just so happened to record the song on my 4track and so far it sounds pretty good for using one mic! Next up in the Cruz joint, we have the Scorehounds from Norfolk and I also had to play with these guys! I dont have much to say, NO PRACTICE = SHITTY PERFORMANCE!!! Nuff said!!! Last, but not least, we have the Dirty Fingers from Charlottesville! They put on a great show! They did a cool cover of the Joneses song, PillboxE Youve got the badass bass player, Goose and Scotto on the gits which by the way, he has come a long way, he fuckinErocks, Josh on the drums keepinEthe fuckinEbeat and Tony on the vocals and bottlebreakinE My two favorite songs they do will always have to be, Only PervertsEand Shes a slutE!! Their debut single is on Black Lung records, go buy it!!! The Final Fiasco, The Unabombers, The Horehounds, Thee Apostles and The Candy Snatchers @ Chichos, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Monday, September 3, 2002. Alright, Chichos, Monday night, last show rocknroll show!!! I aint too crazy about Crazy Charlies meathead mansion takeover for beach meathead/college/ surferduuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuudes! Fawk that!!! Im really gonna miss the beer and pizza and the pushed up bra boobies of the waitresses!!! WHOO! In this event, I was callinEaround to see who had any equipment due to the fact that my amp was at Steveland Studios! So I was callinEaround to Erico and Larry to see what the deal was and to no avail!!! I was told by Larry that the Gonowheres, Apostles, Unabombers, Horehounds and Snatchers were on the bill! Yeah, fuckinEright?!? There were no GoNowheres and we were all waiting there patiently for some equipment and whoo, let there be drums!!! Youve got 3 drum whores in the area and nobody communicates, but to some avail, geezus karyst, Serge had a drumkit! Holy fawkinEgawd! Every guitar player played thru the Unabombers equipment! Thanks, Trey and Greg and Greg! First up, we have from P-Town, the Unabombers playinEa tight set with the Tears on my pillowEsong played and also a tribute to the dead Ramones, Blitzkrieg BopE You cant go wrong with some Ramones!!!! Secondly, we have the Horehounds playinEa couple tunes off their EP on Rapid Pulse records! A better set after the Cruzers chaos!!! Thirdly, from the sewers of Nawfuck, Thee Apostles with Greg Wise on the skins again previously on the Unabombers set! Greg is a hard hitter with so much soul and passion with every drum he beats!!!! Erico was playinEsome cool slide guitar and its been a long time since Ive seen the Three Apostles! They still fuckinEhave it!!! Whens that Black Jesus reunion show happeninEErico??? Lastly, we have the band of the hour, the Candy Snatchers playinEa rockinEset as expected! They played many songs and rocked Chichos as every band did before them!!! Matt with the Double neck Danelectro behind the head was fuckinEgreat! They played a StonesEsong, JumpinEJack FlashEand I had to tell Willy that it was in the key of B! Anyways, goodbye to Chichos! Goodbye to the pizza, Goodbye to the free beer, goodbye to the fuckinEmeatheads that run the fuckinEjoint and goodbye to rocknroll because the fuckinEbeach aint gonna see or hear rocknroll again!?! My memories of Chichos -I remember one night I went to see a band there, I think the B-Movie Rats to be exact and I bought a slice of pizza. I took a bite and it was fuckinEhot as hell, you know, the cheese and the sauce burns the fuckinEroof of yer mouth and the skin on the roof of yer mouth fuckinEbubbles and blisters and you end up poppinEit later to have a mouthful of puss! Well, I remember takinEa bite and my friend, Ali saw me take a bite and saw my reaction and then she wanted a bite and bit into it and had the same reaction and Ash saw the same thing happen and so he took a bite and we all got our fuckinEmouths burnt from this fuckinEpizza! At that point, being as drunk as I was, I was unaware that my piece of fuckinEpizza was a communal cuisine!?! -I just know that if Larry books you a show at Chichos, youve gotta make sure hes DJing! If he aint there, its gonna be doubled booked and all fuckinEhell breaks fuckinEloose! -Dont ever park behind Chichos, yer car will be towed! -Chichos has like fuckinE20 beach meathead bouncers, no wonder they cant afford to pay the bands jack! -One night, the Horehounds were playinEand everyone who got on the mic would say while lookinEat Josh, Paul Schaeffer, Ladies and Gentlemen!E#060;br> -Another night, Holly told me that she saw Josh with the Horehounds and he had a comb in his back pocket! The Horehounds update! What the fuck do you wanna know about this fuckin' band!?!?! It was fun while supplies lasted! For a limited time only! NO, NO, NO, NO, NO! We were pretty much in Larry May's words, 'Norfolk's last hope for rocknroll!' Which translates as, 'Dude, we don't have a band tonight, would you like to open?' or 'Norfolk's opening act!' or my best line, 'Man, thee Apostles couldn't make it, do you wanna play?' The whole story on this band was that it started in mid-August of 2001 and died in late August of 2002! One record, an EP on Rapid Pulse record which was released in late June of 2002, pretty much sold out 500 copies in 8 months! Not bad at all, 6 months the band wasn't even playin', the record was still sellin' and sold out, the record that is! A man from Italy wanted (s) to put out the long awaited Horehounds album on vinyl which he told me he wanted to do that in February of 2002 and he told me that it would be due out in early spring 2003! We'll see what happens! Is it over for the Horehounds? 'Nothing is over! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?' No, I would still like to do something with this band minus the original lineup, you know who you are! But I want to wait until there is actually an album whether it be vinyl or cd or both! We'll just have to wait and fuckin' see!!! The Horehounds at Chicho's, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Fall 2001 This was a fuckin' disaster! The key is, never play a show booked by Larry if he ain't gonna be at the show dj'ing! It was sketchy to begin with! We get in there and it's dark as fuck! Mucho beach meatheads! And it was early, like 9pm! I knew it was a bad scene when I didn't even see Larry there and when the multitude of beach meatheads outweighed a possibility of like at least one person I would know! Well, the Strap-ons were gonna play, but they discovered the same shit! So they stayed for the show, but they backed out of playing! The other bands were fuckin' rap bands with band behind them! It was kinda weird playin' behind them! We got up there and every time we finished a song, it was either quiet in the whole fuckin' bar or there were like fuckin' golf claps! It was pathetic! On top of that, I had parked my truck behind the bar because I was going to park in a lot whereby I would pay the fee and the chick in the lot told me I could park behind the bar! Fuckin' whore! My truck got towed and my friend's truck got towed! Yeah, we borrowed this chick's truck because it was a 4runner and it was rainin' like cats and fuckin' dogs! So we had to get money outta the bank and get out cars outta hock! I was furious as well! The tow truck guy was tryin' to do the paper work and I was tellin' him shit like, 'I bet yer gonna have a great fuckin' meal tomorrow, towin' all the fuckin' cars! I gave you the money and you need to move this fuckin' tow truck motherfucker!!!' I was pissed! I swore never to play Chicho's again! Or the Beach for that matter! Horehounds' Update Is this fuckin' necessary? Yes, it fuckin' is necessary! Rapid Pulse records has repressed the first Horehounds' EP in Limited Edition Green Vinyl! There are enough copies to go around, so if you want one, ask me or go thru Rapid Pulse Records. The first pressing are all gone! You can find 'em somewheres, I have a couple left, but I don't know where else you can git 'em! There are probably a couple left at Skinnies in Norfuck! As for the album! I don't know what the fuck is the fuckin' deal with this fuckin' shit! There were 2 labels who wanted to put out a cd and a record! One label was in Michigan called DUI records and the other one is outta Italy called Rockin' Bones! Let's start with the label from Michigan! I sent DUI records a CD last year and he told me he wanted to put out a CD version of the album. Then he told me that he never received it for many weeks! Then I didn't hear from the fucker! I email him to tell him the EP sold out and is being repressed and then he tells me that he wanted to try and do something again and then I never hear from the fucker again! Maybe the motherfucker is payin' for DUI's! I don't fuckin' know! Fuckin' flakey motherfucker!!!! As for the Rockin' Bones label! This is outta Italy, so I have no control over anything! Talkin' and doin' are two fuckin' diffrent things! Last year he wanted to put it out and then I never heard a gotdam thing! Then this year, he tells some of my friends in France that it should be out in spring 2003! Hey, it's fuckin' Summer now and summer is almost fuckin' over! No fuckin' album yet! I don't know what to fuckin' think! I have long made some cdr copies for people and had a cover made up and just gave them out! I have long remixed the fuckin' album! The copy that this guy has is a rough mix, probably not even a mix with added guitars, vocals, and other shit! But he keeps tellin' me that the record is being pressed right now! It's in the factory! We'll fuckin' see when it is out! Anyways, there are no Horehounds! There is no Horehounds' band! I would however like to regroup this trash if a record every does fuckin' come out! But like I said, we'll fuckin' see!!!!!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?! Horehounds update This just fuckinEin. I got an email from the RockinEBones label in Italy and he tells me that hes still fuckinEwaitinEon the record to be pressed or its being fuckinEpressed. I dont fuckinEknow what the fuck is going on! But thats the fuckinEnews on that. Yeah, I started the band in fuckinE2001, got an EP in June, 2002, then band became defunct in August of the same year, then I got word that the EP sold out in Feb of 2003 and it has been repressed, Horehounds are on a Black Lung compilation that just came out called Urine stains across virginiaE Now, Im just tryinEto find other labels who might wanna put out a single or cd or album of the new remixes! I dont know what to think of the rockinEBones label! I will be on a Thunders tribute comp playinEguitar with Frances Freddy Lynxx and Steve Baise. That is due out this fall! As for the HorehoundsE Ill keep you postedE. More Horehounds Updates! Non horehounds music news. I got news that Ash (Paco Horehound) is going to be a father in about 2.5 months. He and his girlfriend, (or the mother of his kid) are expecting in this amount of time. There was a Witt update. He is now just ridinEaround with some dealers or something scoring here and there. Not really an update! There was a Stalker sighting, actually he was seen at Todds house on July 4th. I spoke to him and he told me hes goinEto Juneau, Alaska. Im currently tryinEto put together either an MC5 tribute band and/or a ThundersEtribute band, playinEmore stuff like off of LAMF, dolls and solos material. I am also recording some Sambone solo songs at Steveland studio. Horehounds update Yeah, why is this necessary? I don't fuckin' know! Anyways, I've been sendin' out some cd's of the new Horehounds' album mix to some labels! I emailt like fuckin' 30 labels, half of 'em were like fuckin' defunct and the other half wanted me to send them a copy! Hopefully, someone will pick this shit up and put something out! I still don't know what the fuck is going on with Rockin' Bones! I guess it's just a waiting game right now! There's one guy in the netherlands who seems to be really into the Virginia scene rocknroll! So hopefully something can happen! We'll just have to wait and see! Another Horehounds update Did we really need one of these again? Yes, you did! I have recently been contacting some record labels around the world, tryin' to get them to put out this fuckin' HOrehounds album! I have 2 labels one in Japan and one in Texas who want to use one song for a cd compilation! I guess that's cool and better than nothing. I'm still waiting as well as the rest of the world for Rockin' Bones to put out the vinyl version of the Horehounds album. Another Horehounds Update Nothing much to update about. I just got in contact with a couple of labels and so far, 2 of them want to put a Horehounds' song on a compilation. One label is 1+2 records out of Japan and the other label is out of Texas. Not bad. We'll see who else wants to do something! I know I contacted someone in France and he wants to do something, but probably not until next year sometime. We'll see what happens! What ever happened to.... Yeah, whatever happend to Stevie and the Secrets? I don't know! All of a sudden, Ash was playin' some shows with them and then they were gone! Nothing was ever to be heard about them. What about Ash? What happend to him? Well, when the Horehounds took a hiatus, Ash played with some other bands here and there and then hit rock bottom, lost his girlfriend, wasn't workin', pawned pretty much everything and was just gone. The latest on him is that he's gonna be a daddy to Girl Ashley's kid! What about Josh? What happend to him? Or do we care? I don't know! Sorta the same as Ash, pretty much he had jobs, lost jobs and the latest is that he's moving to Alaska! What about Big Bobby? Well, he relocated from NC to Richmond, his wife is having a kid sometime next year and he's doing some odd gigs here and there. Another Horehounds update Probably, by now or very soon, The Ashleys will have their newborn kid! Ex-drummer, Ash will be a dad! I don't know what's going on with the other Horehounds! Haven't heard much from them. I spoke with some record labels all over the world and there's a label in Holland who wants to put out a 10" with 2 horehounds songs + some other bands! More like an America VS. Europe comp 10"! That sounds pretty cool! That's all I know for now! Stay tuned! Horehounds Update! -----Original Message----- From: Rockin' Bones (Our bands rock!) There were only a limited run of 200 repressed copies on green vinyl and I have 50 and I dont really have 50 anymore. I have a couple left! Im not sure how many there are left at Rapid Pulse records! So you can get it from me! And the Urine Stains across Virginia 7Ecomp is available on Black Lung records. We have a song on that record along with other local bands. I have a few copies of that as well! There were only 500 copies of the Horehounds album and I got 100 copies and have sold about 10 in the first week Ive had them! I dont know how much faster I will be selling these records, but if you want a copy, just contact me! Just check out the ad in this issue of The DIRT. The Horehounds The band that started in August of 2001, with 3 junkies and Sambone. It was my comeback project from a 4 year absense in the Rocknroll scene in this area. After a couple of shows and shows the band did at Chichos because Larry called us at 10pm due to the fact a band cancelled, The Horehounds were on their way to something! I dont know what that something was, but it was something. Due to the departure of the second guitar player over $30 bucks, the Horehounds became a 3-piece band a week before entering Steveland Studios for a grueling session for the upcoming album. I had figured that we knew the songs enough that we could record all of them! And why not!?! So we did! We pretty much recorded 13 songs in one day! We got the guitars good, the drums good, and the bass good! Thats all we need, well, actually, just the drums! The guitars and bass could be fixed anytime! It was a very tough time! Studio work is very demanding, you have to be perfect or very close to perfect! On stage, you sound like shit because yer drunk or smacked out! But after $1000 of studio time and shit I sent out to mucho labels all over the fuckinEworld the end result wasnt really bad at all. After 10 months with this band, an EP with 3 songs was put out by Rapid Pulse Records. 2 months later, the band just folded. 6 months later, the EP sold out all the copies which was pretty cool considering the fact that the band wasnt even playinEor existed for 8 months! After a year and a half of waiting and waiting, I was told in February of 2002, that RockinEBones wanted to put out the album on vinyl and it finally became a reality in August of 2003. Also in mid-2003, the Horehounds were featured on the Urine stains across VirginiaE7Ecompilation. They were also featured on the Steveland Studio comp in 2002. Not bad, for a band that was mostly heroin-induced and one guy tryinEto make a comeback on the scene. But its not over yet! With this album, I plan to reform a version of the Horehounds and do a record release party. I also want to take this band to Europe to do a 2 week tour. These goals are all possible and hopefully, it can all be a reality!!!! Stay tuned!
