Building History:
In November 1931 when T L Bivens bought from W M Fergerson the northeast corner lot, [5-1] and [5-2], of Ann St and Main St there were two existing structures, both two story wooden frames buildings [PS: Nov 12, 31].
The one nearest Ann St was probably the one erected by Dan F Sutherland and Ben M Griffin in 1892. The next one eastward was probably that of John T Lewis & Son erected by Whitcomb A Palmer in 1894 [JM: PCT 177].
In May 1933 T L Bivens build 2 brick store on this site, the corner lot for a filling station, site [5-1] and the adjoining lot for a store room, site [5-2A] [PS: May 18, 33].
Service station was demolished and replaced with Haskett Realty in 1978.

* Keowee Pharmacy established 1909, Dr R E Lewis was pharmacist till about 1934. The Pickens water works and sewer system was upgraded and improved in 1921 and a "standpipe" was located at rear of Keowee Pharmacy [PS: Jun 16, 21]. Keowee Pharmacy was sold by Mrs R E Lewis in 1934 to McLesky & Todd and became known as Keowee Cut Rate Drug Store [PS: Oct 18, 34]. Dr Ruhl Cannon had an interest in Keowee Cut Rate till he sold it. He moved to the new Cannon Clinic of his son Dr Gaines Cannon on Pendleton St and opened Prescription Shop [PS: Jun 6, 1946]. Carl Alexander bought Keowee Cut Rate and sold only patented and packaged drugs along with sandwiches by Mrs Horace Davie [PS: Jun 13, 46]. Albert & Wallace Finley bought the business and assumed management in 1948 [PS: Jan 8, 48]. Keowee Pharmacy moved to [site 5-6] in January 1950 [PS: Jan 5, 50].

Up to 1928 was probably a wooden structure used by Reece's Barbershop. [PS: May 26, 26]
One story brick structured erected by O S Stewart in late 1928 for a drug store [PS: Nov 8, 28].
Business History:
* Reece's Barbershop till about 1928 when brick structure was erected, he may have moved to back part of Pickens Bank. [DG Interview]
* Darsey Dry Goods. [PS: Feb 15, 34]
* Yongue's Drug Store. At least from Feb 1934 to Sep 1949 based on [PS: Feb 15, 34] which noted that Dr J D Yongue was in Stewart building formerly occupied by Darsey Dry Goods next door to Post Office. Dr Yongue was previously with Easley Drug Company and had 25 years experience in pharamcy.
Dr Yongue had building erected on site [5-15] in Summer of 1949 [PS: Mar 24, 49] which was between Welborn Jewelers and Gulf Station. He moved in during September [PS: Sep 1, 49].
* Keowee Cut Rate Drug Store moved in the following January [PS: Jan 5, 50] and remained in this location till about 1968 [HCD 1957-88].

From Jane Boroughs Morris' book "Pickens First Baptist Church and Town", [JM: PCT], there's a picture which shows the new Freeman Building [site 5-10] and old frame Masonic Lodge building [site 5-11] circa 1905, there's no building [site 5-9] West of the Freeman Building. From Pickens Sentinel issue May 27, 1926 [PS: May 27, 1926] there's a picture of the Pickens Drug Company [site 5-10A] with building on site 5-9.
Building was constructed between 1905 and 1926. Frank E Alexander died in 1921 [PS: Sep 1, 1921] a year or so after acquiring the property in 1920 DB[HHH-85]. He could have had the building erected or an existing building was then known as the Alexander building after he died.
Business History:
* Alexander 5, 10 & 25 Cent Store had ads in [PS: Apr 12, 1928 and Dec 13, 1928] but site location is not know, it doesnt appear to fit here.
* Alexander Theatre in the rear portion of the second floor with enterance at the back. Earliest ad [PS: Sep 8, 1921]. Improvement made [PS: Jul 28, 1927], air conditioning, new screen added eariler, Mr Matheney is operator. T L Bivens constructed new building next to Alexander Theatre for Pickens Motor Company according to [PS: Nov 8, 1928]. Last ad before [PS: Oct 15, 1931] when the Jefferson Theatre was constructed.
* Katz's Dry Goods [site 5-9A] had ads and going out off business notices in Pickens Sentinell issues from Nov 25, 1926 to Jan 3, 1931.
* Black's 5, 10, 25 Cent Store [site 5-9A] opens as new business in building formerly occupied by Katz [PS: Oct 1, 1931].
* Hall's 5 & 10 Cent Store [site 5-9A]. Lawerance Hall buys stock of Jones Variety Store [PS: Nov 30, 1933]. Moved to building formerly occupied by Black's 5 & 10 & 25 Cent Store [PS: Mar 17, 38].
* Pickens Furniture Company [site 5-9B], new business operated by G D Cureton opens next to Finley Market {PS: Oct 28, 1926].
* Dixie Home #8 [site 5-9B], also known as Dixie Stores #8 predecessor of Winn-Dixie, swaps store rooms with Pickens Furniture Company, two businesses inbetween them [PS: Jun 30, 1927]. Dixie Home came to Pickens in 1925 and previous location is not known, E W Smith was manager [PS: Aug 13, 1931]. There was an attempted robbery, 2nd in five months, [PS: Oct 22, 1936]. Business History:
* Pickens Bank moved from a small brick building on [site 9-14] (old Lovell Shoe Shop) to here in 1910 [PS: Apr 11, 40]. Pickens Bank was bought by South Carolina National Bank in 1931, J H Bruce retired after 17 years with the bank and Frank McFall, with 20 years service, replaced him as president [PS: Jun 2, 31]. The bank was robbed of $26,000 in July 1932 and about two years later Frank McFall, W E Finley and Dr Earle travel to Asheville to identify a suspects being held in connection with a Charolette mail robbery [PS: Jul 28, 32; May 24, 34]. Pickens Bank offically becomes South Carolina National Bank in 1935 [PS: Jan, 35]. Frank McFall, son of W T McFall jr died in March 1938 [PS: Mar 10, 38].
South Carolina National merged with Wachovia in ____ and continued buisness at this site till August 1998 when it moved their offices to the branch building on West side of US 178 just across Town Creek.

Cannon Memorial Hosiptal
Building History:
Built in 1945. Demolished 1980s.
History:
The Pickens County Grand Jury recommended building a hospital for Pickens in 1943 [PS: Sep 30, 43]. In March 1945 contracts were let for the construction of a nine room clinic with four more to be added. Dr E Gaines Cannon opened clinic here in November 1945 and his offices were completed in May 1945 [PS: Nov 22, 45; May 31, 45]. Dr Ruhl Cannon opened a pharamcy here in June 1946, The Prescription Shop [PS: Jun 6,46]. A two story addition was added on the South side in 1947 [PS: Nov 27, 47]. Another addition was planned for the rear of the building [PS: Oct 14, 48]. Dr PJ Moore, surgeon located here in January 1949 [PS: Jan 6, 49]. Dr Reese Alexander Allgood returned to Pickens and join the Cannon Clinic in November 1953 [PS: Nov 3, 53]. Hospital Auxilary organized in 1955 [PS: May 5, 55]. Dr John M Harden had offices here from 1957 to about 1961; he opened offices on W Cedar Rock St by 1962 [HCD]. Dr Albert J Reinovsky also had offices here till he moved to Garvin Street by 1962 [HCD].
Cannon Memorial farther south on Pendleton St about 1983. The building remained vacant for several years and was demolished.

Two story wooden frame structure erected 1869 for James M McFall and John Lewis Thornley and was the corner lot of Main and Pendleton [JM PTFBC: picture caption]. It was supposedly the second building erected in Pickens. Structure lasted till 1929 when it was replaced by a brick building. At time of removal it was the oldest building on Main Street known as Col Hollingsworth building [PS: Jun 6, 29; Jul 4, 29].

Heath - Bruce - Morrow, partially demolished 1935
Building History:
Two story building erected in 1900 by Heath - Bruce - Morrow, a group from Charlotte NC, the largest store on Main St, 90 x 90 foot with 3 store rooms, on corner of Main St and Court St. This site remained vacant after the 1893 fire which destroyed provious structures one of which was Col Hollingsworth
Business History:
* Heath-Bruce-Morrow general merchantile, in 1903 B Lewis was manager of hardware section and Mrs Tirzah Hughes was milliner.
* In 1933 the building housed Southern Public Utilitites (predecessor of Duke Power), a poolroom and Clayton Furniture. Southern Public Utilities purchased Pickens Light & Power which was the city's electrical power source in April 1930. The Utility became known as Duke Power Company in July 1935. * Pickens Furniture Company from before 1933 to when FV Clayton opened opened his furniture business which was renamed to Pickens County Furniture in October 1934. [PS: Jan 26, 33] [PS:Oct 4, 34]
* JH Bruce and JC Carey leased property to a gas and oil company in Octobor 1935 and the front 3/4 was demolished for a service station.

In October 1935, JH Bruce and JP Carey leased this part of the Old Big Store site to Sinclair Oil Company. The front 3/4 of the building was demolished and a service station erected [PS: Oct 10, 35].

Site was part of John L Thornley stables bought by AM Morris. AM Morris and Ben Frank Freeman sold it to Hovey Nealy who operated it till he became Chief of Police. Arthur Gravely then took charge of it. Freeman and WT Bates had stables were Roper Motor Company was in 1933. [PS Sep 14 33, thirty years ago 1903].
There was a public well in middle of Main St in front of this site [PS Sep 6, 33].
James P Carey built two story brick building in 1926 with two store fronts. [PS Mar 25, 26].

Building History:
Residence of M R Hester, used as a boarding house [GW map 1963].
One hundred and fifty seats were added in January 1948 and the rear extended by 40 feet [PS Jan 8, 48].
Movie theater with stone verner and 500 seats built by Mrs Myrtle Stevenson on site of old M F Hester's residence. S J Nalley were the contractors and Netwon Brothers to do the stone work [PS Sep 5, 35].
The stone verner building was demolished between 1975-79 and the Western Auto building constructed [HCD 1955-88].

Theater leased to Strain & Sparks company from Georgia with C R Strain, Henry Strain and W F Sparks mangers [Oct 3, 35]. Theatre call Jefferson Theatre after Jefferson D Holder, father of Myrtle Stevenson [Oct 10, 35].
Pickens Sentinel had special issue for the theater's opening. "Confidential" with E Valyn Knap & Donald Cook shows Nov 11-12, a gangster and g-men movie. "The Man from Gwentown" with Tim McCoy shows Sat Nov 9; "Lonesome Trailer" a comedy; "China Seas" with Clark Gable, Jean Harlo, Wallace Beart; "Dream Walking" and "Travel Walk", Popeye cartoons Nov 14-15; "Range Warare" with Rob Russell and Rebel the Marvel Horse; "Tickets Please" comedy; "Hook Lighting" spotlight were other opening showings [PS Nov 7, 35].
There were amateur performance nights weekly on Thursday night at the Jefferson Theatre which starts county wide program at schools [PS Mar 5, 36].
The theater was closed in May 1936 while Mrs Myrtle Stevenson looked for new leasee [PS May 14, 36]. The theater had new owners, George Wilby & Associates of Atlanta Geogia, in November 1937. W S Stevenson continued as manager [PS Nov 4, 37]. H W Kimbro was manger in October 1940 [PS Oct 31, 40], John E Stillman manager in June 1944 [PS Jun 29, 44].
The Jefferson & Roxie Theatre was sold to Marthis Theatres by Duncan & Richards in Sepember 1944. Roy F Stipe was manager [PS Sep 7, 44]. It was bought by Mr Jacob B Smith & Mrs Robert Stephens in December 1945 [PS Dec 13, 45]. Star Theatre bought the Jefferson Theater in September 1947. SD Mitchell was manager and C Haywood was president [PS Sep 18, 47].
It as the PIC Theater by April 1949 [PS Apr 7, 49].
There was a storm in June 1953 and trees fell against it while patrons waited inside during the storm. There was no power for the projector or lights [PS Jun 25, 53].
The PIC Theater was listed in Hill's City Directory as vacant from 1962 onward [HCD 1957-88].
