"The future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of sixty minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is." - C.S. Lewis
Time … I’ve been thinking a lot about time lately. Time is something that is common among us - we all are given a finite amount of it. What differs between us is our perception of it (it’s speed, it’s significance, etc.) and also what we choose to do with it.
My thoughts of time stem from the news of my latest MRI (on July 24). Once again, my scan was read as “Stable disease”! The scan looks the same as it did for the last 3 MRI’s – in April, January and October of last year – no enhancements and still no visible sign of tumor. What a blessing! I have been given another 3 months in the clear, so to speak! My next appointment will be in October.
I then thought about the other elements of time that have been significant in my brain tumor journey since my last update. On June 14, I “celebrated” my “tumor-versary” – 5 years since my diagnosis; July 7th was 1 year since my second brain surgery (a gross total resection) and I have been off of any treatment (chemotherapy) since January (a blissful 7 months!!)
While I was physically going through the past 5 years - the surgical recoveries, the 20+ months of chemotherapy, the hundreds of medications and their side-effects, and the dozens of MRI’s to track the tumor’s status ~ occasionally the fear and uncertainty of my situation would cause me to feel like time was dragging along and that I would never emerge from the other side of this “new” reality of my life intact and unchanged.
Well, here I am 5 years later, INTACT, but certainly not unchanged, but in many ways for the better! My perception of the last five years has changed in that it seems to have gone by quickly; filled with so many moments of great love and beauty (stemming from the support of my family and friends, the joy of numerous wonderful occasions and celebrations; and the peacefulness and pride that comes from having helped someone else in their journey through this maze of life.) My perception of time has also changed because I am encouraged by news of the many inroads that are being made in cancer research in the past 5 years and is my greatest wish/hope/prayer that they will continue.
In terms of our life in general, these same thoughts apply. As sleep-deprived parents of a newborn baby, we wonder when the endless nights of waking up times too numerous to count will finally end and when will these helpless babies start becoming more self-sufficient. But looking back (9 ½ years later, with Erica for example), you wonder where in the world that time went and will the next 9 ½ years until her high school graduation go just as quickly?!?! You wonder, with incredulity, how you can possibly be celebrating your 15 year college reunion this summer, your 20 year high school reunion next year or celebrating your 12th wedding anniversary with the love of your life.
I’m sharing a few of the quotes about time that I’ve come across lately in regards to time …
Time is a companion that goes with us on a journey. It reminds us to cherish each moment, because it will never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we have lived.
played by Patrick Stewart, from the film "Star Trek: Generations"
“Don’t count every hour in the day, make every hour in the day count.
I am also including some of our much awaited Disney photos and other Lohan family photos of our “moments in time”.
May God bless all your moments, big or small, and thank you again for being a part of my life!
