Relevant Quotes

Wilkinson says to Fales "They hate the cans! Stay away from the
cans!" This was a line from the movie The Jerk.. Wilkinson said this because they
were being shot at. This quote is relevant too the text because it shows that the
men don't have to be serious all the time. Sometimes they can mess around and
be stupid, even though something serious is happenning to them.

Howe thinks to himself, and says "The very idea of adhering to the
rules of engagement
at this point was preposterous." What he's saying I at that point in the
war following the rules of engagement, don't shoot unless you're being shot at,
was impossible. This is relevant to the text because it shows how intense the
fighting is now. They were severely outnumbered. At this point if you didn't shoot people, you
would be shot.

An old platoon leader told Stebbins, "When war start, a solider
wants like hell to be there, but once he's there, he wants like hell to come home."
This was true of a lot of soldiers, especially Stebbbins. He desperately wanted in the
war, and once he was there he desperately wanted to come home. This is relevant
to the text because it shows how most of the ssoldiers are feeling.

After Wilkinson runs across a streeet with massive amounts of shooting
going on and returns unhurt one of the D-boys says "Man, God really loves
medics." This is important because it shows how brave some soldiers are.
Wilkinson went across that street so many times, just so he could try to save
someone's life.

Wilkinson said to Stebbins "As your health care professional, I
feel I should warn you that narcotics and firearms doon't mix." Stebbins had just
gotten wounded and was given Percocet, a drug for painn. He was also guarding a door with a
riffle. This
is important to the text because it shows that the men still have a sense of humor, even though
they were wounded and hurting.

Garrison thinks to himself "It seemed like everybody in the city
wanted suddenly to help kill Americans" This is relevant to the text
because it shows how the people at the command center were reacting and feeling.

Howe thinks, "There was just too much going on" this is relevant
to the text because it also shows how the soldiers were feeling. They had so
many things to do all at once. It was confusing.<
8. Perino thought about Smith
and said, "he has begun to make peace with dying." This is important to
the text because it shows the worst parts of war. It shows the part when the men are
dying, and other men are losing their friends. These parts of war, although
unpleasant are unavoidable.

Schmid thinks about Smith dying and says " He wansn't certain of
it, but that was his gut feeling" he was saying he thought he could have
saved Smith if they had gotten him back to the base. This is relevant to the
text because it shows how hard it was for some of the soldiers to cope with death.
10. One of the wounded men was crying,
starting to freak out and he said, "We're going to die here! We're never going
home!" This is important to the text because it shows how the soldiers act when
one of them just cracks and flips out.
