Frankenstein: Smith Essay
Quote Incorporation Exercise
Read over the following paragraph. Select two quotes from the “‘Cooped
Up’ with ‘Sad Trash’” (F 313-33) and place them in the paragraph
where they would best support the claims being made. Be prepared
to explain the reasons behind the choices you make.
The female character who suffers the most from the views toward
women in Genevan society is Justine Moritz. Unlike the characters of Elizabeth
and Caroline, Justine cannot rely on her socioeconomic status to alleviate
some of the problems of being a woman. She is expected to bear a
substantial portion of the domestic responsibilities in the Frankenstein
household, and is subsequently more susceptible to the negative judgement
of society when William Frankestein’s body is found, thus indicating, at
the very least, her failure to fulfill her role as maternal protectress.
As a result, she is less able to defend herself at her own trial. When
faced with the circumstance of the locket found in her possession, she
admits, “I have no power of explaining it” (Shelley 81), and she ultimately
validates her conviction, at least in the eyes of the agents of the law,
when she confesses shortly afterwards (83). Thus it is the combination
of class and gender that determines her unfortunate fate.
