In their essays, both Amy Tan and Tanya Barrientos describe growing
up in America as children of immigrants from other countries. One of the
most important aspects of their identities as "hyphenated" Americans is
the use of English by both themselves and their parents.
Write an essay in which you compare and contrast the relationship
between English and the language of one's heritage in these two essays.
Be as specific as possible in your discussion of these essays, including
in them specific quotes from the essays themselves to support your claims.
Some questions you could ask yourself to generate some ideas:
-
How do Barriento’s parents view the concept of acculturation? How does
their view compare with Tan’s mother’s?
-
How did Barrientos, as a child, view speaking Spanish? How does
this view compare with Tan’s childhood view of speaking Chinese?
-
Why does Barrientos decide to learn Spanish?
-
How does Barrientos view her parents’ decision to speak only English
in the house during her childhood? How does this perspective compare with
Tan’s views of her mother’s use of English?
-
Papers must be typed, double-spaced, and include an outline (which does
not count toward the 500-word minimum).
-
Be sure your thesis is clear and precise and that your supporting evidence
is adequate and effective.
-
Also be sure to eliminate all mechanical errors and to use spellcheck,
both with your computer and your own eyes.
