In his essay "Literacy Behind Bars," Malcolm X describes the process
by which he learned to read while in prison. In his discussion, he describes
this period of his life as one during which was was most "truly free" and
suggests that he learned more in prison than he would have in a university.
What learning processes have you experienced that may have involved
non-traditional experiences like those described by Malcolm X? What obstacles
to your achievement existed? What strategies did you utilize to overcome
those obstacles? Be as specific as possible in your discussion.
You may also feel free to use a quote from Malcolm X's essay in
your introduction as a way of setting a foundation.
