The Assignment: Ellison's Invisible Man
-
Over the course of the novel, the Narrator makes a number of speeches
in a variety of contexts:
-
Battle Royal Speech (29ff)
-
Eviction Speech (276ff)
-
Arena Speech (341ff)
-
Clifton's Eulogy (454ff)
-
Which of these speeches is the most important? You can interpret "important"
in many ways, but be sure it is clear in your discussion why exactly it
is important: Is it the most effective? Is it the most revealing
of the Narrator's true identity or position? Does it raise the most valid
points? Is it the most persuasive?
-
It would be useful to explain the speech within the context of the larger
novel, not just in terms of what is happening right at the moment that
the speech occurs.
-
DO NOT SIMPLY SUMMARIZE THE SPEECH !
-
Be sure to refer to specific passages, using direct quotes and parenthetical
