The Assignment: Application of Hughes's "Cowards from
the Colleges"to Ellison's Invisible Man
-
To what extent does the narrator's college experience demonstrate the
characteristics Hughes associates with the historically black colleges
he describes in his essay? Does Ellison present these characteristics
in the same way as Hughes? Is he equally critical of the historically black
college environment? Identify specific passages in both Ellison's and Hughes's
works that support the claims you introduce. Potential figures to
discuss include the Founder, Norton, and Bledsoe.
-
You may find some more interesting material in the section (98-150)
that includes Homer Barbee's Founder's Day speech.
-
Be sure to refer to specific passages, using direct quotes and parenthetical
