Time Period-1550-1600

The age of Shakespeare was called the Elizabeth Era; it was a great time in English history. England was emerging as the leading naval and commercial power of the Western world. It secured its position with the defeat of the Spanish Armada. The Church of England was also established. Many colonists were sent eastward in search of profit. In trade, art, and power, England prospered.
London soon became known as the "heart" of England; it was the center of rising culture and booming commerce. Among the leading literary artists of the day were dramatists and poets. Even the poplulation saw some changes. It grew 400% from 1500-1600. New dramas and comedies were produced in the London theatre; the style: blank verse.
