January and February, 2003

In late January we went for a hike up Mt Gardner with Taliesin's Auntie Andrea. Unfortunately, about 10 minutes from the top of this small mountain we begun to get wet from the mists, which were so thick they blocked our view. Taliesin was getting cold, and grumpy, so we decided to go back down instead of finish the hike. Still, we had a wonderful time. Thanks to all of our families, who made this happen financially, we went to Europe in February! Taliesin got to meet his 3 great-grandmothers, there, and all his aunts, uncles, and second-cousins. He was unfortunately quite sick for the first week, while we were in the Netherlands, but most people managed to come visit us where we were staying at Grootmoeder's house. Then, just in time for Germany, he started to feel better. He seemed to have special "clapping communication" with Omi (Markus' maternal grandmother), and she was thrilled, of course. He also learned to wave while we were there. In Bavaria, while visiting ur-grossmutti and Gerhard and Elisabeth, we made the last part of a pilgrimage to a place called Andechs, and there on top of the hill outside the church, Taliesin sampled his first beer and pretzel. Now he can proudly claim his Bavarian heritage!
