There are many types of
discipline and discipline relationships.
The following definitions are offered to facilitate understanding and
discussion, especially on the LovingSwats Yahoo List.
Please feel free to ask for
clarification or to suggest your own terms and definitions. This may be done either directly with LD or
as an onlist discussion.

Abuse (Noun) 1. corrupt practice or custom; 2. improper
or excessive use or treatment (misuse); 3. language
that condemns or vilifies unjustly, intemperately, and/or angrily; 4. physical maltreatment.

Bottom (Noun) 1. underside, support of something; 2. posterior
end, buttocks, rump; 3. lowest part of something.

Note:
1. Bottom as a description of the passive/receiving partner during sex applies
to any gender pairing. This is a fairly
recent extension of the meaning.

The term "bottom" is often capitalized on BDSM sites. It is "submissive" (small ‘s')that is generally not capitalized, e.g.

Bottom (Verb) 1. to furnish with a bottom; 2. to
provide a foundation for; 3. to reach a point where
decline is halted.

relationship.
Brat (Noun)
1. a
child, an ill-mannered child; 2. an ill mannered,
immature person; 3. the child of a person in a
specified career (military brat).

(LS Noun) denotes ‘junior partner' in a discipline partnership: takes an active
part in deciding what rules and consequences will govern Discipline Partnership
(DP), is equal to the Top in all respects, but defers to his judgment 24/7.
Note: The term "Brat" is never used as a
derogatory term and is not interchangeable with "bottom" or
"sub". However, it can be used to express affection, sometimes tinged
with exasperation and/or amusement.

(Other Noun) bottom in sexual activity or relationship or submissive (sub) to
Dominant (Dom) in BDSM activity or relationship, usually a man (sometimes a
woman).

"Bratting" falls between serious misbehavior and flirting and teasing

Fic or bratfic (LS, Other Noun) a sub category of fiction concerning DR
couples: often very stylized with
incorrigible "sweet" or "smart" or "holy terror"
brat transgressing in some ridiculous way requiring top to spank (and love)
him. Usually involves M/M, but can
involve M/F, and perhaps other combinations.
Challenge -
(Verb) 1. to
demand as due or deserved; 2. to order to halt and
prove identity; 3. to dispute, e.g. as outmoded or
invalid; 4. to question formally he legality or legal
qualifications of, e.g. a juror; 5. to confront or
defy boldly: Dare; b. to call out to duel or combat; c. to invite into
competition; 6. to arouse or stimulate, esp. by presenting with difficulties;
8. to make or present a challenge.
*Challenge
(LS, Other Verb) to request a creative effort of some kind, either for a story
or other written work, sometimes on a specified theme or including some
specified element, from all members on the list. Can be made by the List Members
individually or in combination, or by the administrators of the list (on LS,
the LD or List Dictator).
Challenge (Noun) 1a. Summons that is often threatening,
provocative, stimulating, or inciting; b. invitation to compete in a sport; 2a. A calling to account or into question:
Protest; b. and exception made to a juror; c. a sentry's call to prove
identity; d. a questioning of the right of a vote or voter; 3. a stimulating task or problem; 4. the act of
testing by provoking.

(LS, Other Noun) a specific request for written list activity, such as writing a story
on the theme of Fall.

Time (LS, Other Noun) tool for discipline of brat or person in DR, requires
person to stand in literal corner (or designated spot) for a period of time
specified by top.

*Daddy/boy
(LS, Other Noun) primarily a leather community term for a power exchange
relationship that involves a lesser degree of Domination/submission than a
Master/slave relationship, it refers to an m/m relationship incorporating
respect, obedience, long term commitment, and care. Though a Daddy may be
younger than his boy, a Daddy is usually a care giver and mentor. The two men
create a durable family unit, but both Daddy and boy may elect to form closer
romantic and sexual relationships with others and live separate lives, while
still depending on the commitment and support of their Daddy/boy relationship.
Discipline (Noun) 1. punishment; 2. instruction; 3. a field of study; 4. training that
corrects, molds, or perfects mental faculties or moral character; 5. control gained by enforcing obedience or order; 6. orderly or
prescribed conduct or pattern of behavior; 7. self-control;
8. a rule or system of rules governing conduct or
activity.
*Discipline
(LS Noun) punishment for the purpose of training or correction, including, but
not limited to corporal punishment such as spanking or paddling: can include learning or writing lines, corner
time, extra chores, grounding, timeouts, and loss of privileges.
Note: Extreme punishments that cause lasting marks
(for more than 24 hours) or excessive emotional distress are considered abuse.
Discipline (Verb) 1. to punish or penalize for the sake of discipline; 2.to train
or develop by instruction and exercise, esp. in self control; 3. to bring a group under control; 4. to
impose order upon.

Brat's Top) when rules of Discipline Relationship are broken; 2. to train or exercise Brat (by Brat's Top); 3. to bring Brat under Top's control; 4. to
impose order upon Brat's life 24/7 (by Brat's Top).

Partnership (LS Noun) or "DP" relationship similar to marriage
between two or more (rare to include more than two) people (Top and Brat) who
are equals; along with love and commitment, incorporates the interrelating
needs of Top and Brat; the Top to be ‘in charge'--the head of the
household--responsible for all decisions and the discipline by the Top (or
Tops) of one or more partners for 24/7, and the Brat to agree to be disciplined
and submit to the Top 24/7 according to the terms each partnership agrees upon
together.
Note: Rules and possible consequences (including
physical) are discussed and negotiated in advance, and all persons are free to
end the relationship at any time. No one
can compel another person to stay in any type of relationship, and, just as in
all relationships, all persons in a DP are free to re-define and renegotiate
the relationship at any time.

Relationship (LS Noun) or "DR" relationship of two or more people
that includes discipline as one of its primary components.
Note: a DP is a DR, but a DR is not
necessarily a DP.
Dom (Noun)
abbreviation. 1. domestic, 2. dominant, 3. dominion.

(LS, Other Noun) abbreviation for Dominant, that is, senior person in
relationship of two or more persons with the other person or persons being
submissive. Dom is capitalized. Most often used in BDSM type relationship.
Dominance
(Noun) fact or state of being dominant especially in a social hierarchy.
Dominant (Adjective) 1. commanding, controlling, or prevailing over all others; 2. very important, powerful, or successful; 3. exerting a marked influence; 4. applies
to an element or factor or person whose influence outweighs all others.

(Noun) Dominant individual in a social hierarchy.
*Dominant
(LS, Other Noun) refers to the senior person in a relationship of two or more persons,
the one who makes the decisions for the group.
Not necessarily capitalized.

process to the original, controlling source, the information so transmitted.

(LS, Other Noun) abbreviation for amateur works of fiction created for internet publication; usually written in an area of specific
interest, e.g. concerning Discipline Relationships or using characters created
for a specific television or movie universe.

denoting non-sexual relationship.
Ground
(Verb) 1. to
bring to or place on the ground; 2. to restrict to the
ground (a pilot); 3. to prohibit from taking part in
some usual activities…

Kink (Noun) 1. a short tight twist or curl caused by a doubling or winding
of something upon itself; 2. a mental or physical

Marriage
(Noun) 1. a. the state of being united to a person of
the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship
recognized by law; b. the state of being united to a person of the same sex in
a relationship like that of a traditional marriage (same-sex marriage); c. the
mutual relation of married persons (wedlock); d. institution whereby
individuals are joined in marriage; e. wedding ceremony and attendant
festivities; f.

original character in fiction.
Partner (Noun) 1. one associated with another, especially in action
(associate, colleague; 2. either of two people who dance together; 3. one or
more people who play together in a game against an opposing side; 4. a person
with whom one shares an intimate relationship, one member of a couple; 5. one
member of a business partnership.

(LS, Other Noun) any member of a committed, long term relationship of two (a
couple) or more sharing sexual and domestic needs together. Usually refers to
men, but can include M/W and W/W; includes people in marriage and DP
relationships.

people: intended to embarrass or
humiliate Brat as further punishment. Note: Not acceptable in a DP.

needs a halt in punishment to discuss the situation or feelings.

that includes a Dominant. More often used when discussing BDSM relationships, usually not

(Noun) 1. the
act of submitting something for consideration or inspection; 2. the condition of being submissive, humble or compliant; 3. submitting to the control or the authority of another.

Dominant person. Most often used in
discussing BDSM relationships.
Top (Noun) 1. highest point,
level or part of something: summit, crown; 2. a fitted, integral, or attached
part of unit serving as an upper piece, lid, or covering; 3. the highest degree
or pitch conceivable or attained: acme, pinnacle; 4. the highest position as in rank or
achievement; 5. the choicest part: cream, pick; 6. a person in control, informed
about (on top of his job); 7. person in position of
eminent success, happiness, or fame.

(LS Noun) partner and decision maker in discipline partnership; decides when
rules have been broken, what the consequences will be, and how to carry out the
discipline.
