Jim Martincic is a native of Chicago, Illinois. He has earned many degrees including the Doctor of Musical Arts in Trumpet Performance at the University of Missouri - Kansas City Conservatory of Music, the Master of Music in Trumpet Performance at Illinois State University , where he served as the Graduate Assistant in Jazz Studies & Music Technology, and the Bachelor of Music, in Trumpet Performance at DePaul University (IL).
Dr. Martincic believes in the value of education and has been a member of several educational assciations such as the International Trumpet Guild, College Music Society, International Association of Jazz, and the Music Educators National Conference. He has several reviews published in the International Trumpet Guild and publishes a Mouthpiece Comparison Guide for trumpet. Jim has received invitations to audition at many symphony orchestras and opera houses including Boston, Chicago, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Rockford (IL), St. Louis Symphony Orchestras and the Des Moines and Chicago Lyric Operas. One of the most notable accomplishments was being invited as one of 25 candidates worldwide to audition for the Principal Trumpet position with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in fall 2004. He also received invitations to audition for the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West, United States Marine Band "The President's Own" (Washington, D.C.) and the United States Navy Ceremonial/Concert Band Assignment - The White House (Washington D.C.).
Jim studied jazz under many fine trumpeters including: Niel Dunlap, Ron Modell, Kansas City jazz trumpet legend- Al Pearson and jazz arranging under internationally known Composer/Saxophonist Bobby Watson. His performance interests are very wide in scope, from classical to jazz to contemporary music. Jim's R&B and jazz performances have included such names / groups as: Fatbone, Eddie King & The Swamp Bees, Buddy Guy, and The Voodoo Blues. The classical side of the coin has seen him with several brass ensembles such as: 932-Degree Celsius (named for the melting point of brass), Gargoyle Brass, and Alesis Contemporary Ensemble. He has shared the stage with Dr. Edward Tarr, Marvin Stamm, Mike Vax, Rich Corpolongo, Vincent DiMartino, Doc Severinsen, Harry Connick, Jr., Nick Drozdoff (formerly w/Maynard Ferguson), , Rob Parton, and Jon Faddis. Some of his trumpet teachers have been Al Pearson, Dr. Mark Ponzo, Bill Adam, Nick Drozdoff, Ron Modell, and Niel Dunlap.
Jim's talents are not limited to performance but he aslo composed, recorded, and produced his own style of contemporary jazz with the Creative Arts Ensemble and Level 7. He is a recording artist for Lower Level Studio and Lion's Den Studio. Jim has performed recently with Chicago based ensembles such as - Brass Tracks Jazz Orchestra, Rob Parton's Jazz Tech Big Band, Alan Gresik's: Swing Shift, Bill Gilardon's Chicago Grandstand Big Band, and currently part of Phil Feo's Royal Trumpet Works, Jim Guter's Big Band.
