Michael climbed out of his car and walked up the mountain to the pod chamber. It was a starry night and the air was still warm. Maria had been gone since last night and Tess had gone into a frenzy so he decided to sneak out for a while. As he was about to reach the top he saw something golden floating through the air. Maria, he thought and walked towards the girl. She was sitting on the edge of the mountain, her legs dangling in the air and with a distant look on her face. “Hey” “Hey” she answered without looking at him. Michael sat down beside her and saw that her hands were bloody and most of the skin on her knuckles gone. “Does it hurt?” Maria looked down on her hands and chuckled. “No, I’m almost used to it” “Tess is worried about you” “She shouldn’t be” Maria said quietly. “Well, she is…you managed to get us all worried” Michael said. Maria didn’t answer and they sat in silence for a couple of minutes before she turned and looked at him. “Sorry about the silly war thing, I didn’t really mean it” Michael nodded. “It’s okay and um…thanks…for saving us that day “You’re welcome” Maria said and offered him a small smile. “What’s it like to be immortal?” he asked. “I don’t know if I’d like to live forever without ever being able to die” “I can die” she answered distantly. “But it has to be done a special way in order to be able to kill me” Michael remembered yesterday’s argument. “Like when someone chops your head off?” “Yeah but the steel of that blade has to be made in a difficult way, only demons and us demon hunters possesses that knowledge” she answered and shrugged. “I guess you could say I’ve already died five times. If I wasn’t what I am I’d be dead” “I was a soldier in my past life” Michael said, not really understanding why he was telling Maria this. “Commander of a big army” She looked at him for a short while. “I can see you as a soldier, standing strong and brave to protect your kingdom. Tessa told me her name was Ava, what was yours?” “Rath” “Gotta admit I like Ava better” Maria smiled and became silent for a while. “Michael, you seem like the most alien of your friends…you’re always searching for a way to go home aren’t you?” “I just think there’s gotta be something better for me out there…a place where I’m not the outcast and alien” he said slowly. “Yesterday you said that you couldn’t get involved, what was that all about?” She sighed and rose to her feet. “It’s just as I said, I can’t get involved. I can’t afford to care about mortals and their personal battles, the price might be higher than anyone of you could ever imagine. Now, you gonna take me back to Tessa or do I have to walk?” “I’ll take you back” TBC |
