Lines from Oz
The Poetry of Brian Langley
On a recent trip to distant parts of our vast land and having been woken early once again, this little verse popped into my head. It is intended to be said with some emphasis on the "bloody" word, however I realise that this word, "the great Australian adjective" is unacceptable in some cultures and so I have included another version of my poem which omits it. The "clean" version follows the original.
I have purposely kept it short, knowing that I could have also included trains, aeroplanes, barking dogs, cattle and sheep, crying children, etc. etc. etc.
Also, reference is made here to lorikeets. These very noise small parrots are found in much of our country. If you want to substitute another three syllable bird name, that's fine by me
Morning Noises
Why is it when you travel,
No matter where you stay
There's bloody noises wake you up
before the break of day.
If it's not crows or seagulls
or lorikeets or ducks,
It's sliding doors on Kombi Vans
or bloody diesel trucks.
Or folks who get up early
and chatter as they pass.
Or the bloody council workers
who have to mow the grass.
Now if I had my druthers,
I'd rather sleep till late.
If only there was silence
till half past bloody eight.

Morning Noises (version 2)
Why is it when you travel,
No matter where you stay
There's always noises wake you up
before the break of day.
If it's not crows or seagulls
or lorikeets or ducks,
It's sliding doors on Kombi Vans
or brakes on diesel trucks.
Or folks who get up early
and chatter as they pass.
Or the council roadside workers
who have to mow the grass.
Now if I had my druthers,
I'd rather sleep till late.
If only there was silence
till almost half past eight.
