DISCLAIMER:  I DO NOT own these characters of “ER”.  Even though I do
share a lot of Lucy’s qualities and have her knack when it comes to
children, these characters belong to Warner Bros and NBC.

A Knight for Secrets

It had been about two and a half days since Lucy had been admitted due
to her life-threatening attack by one of her psyche patients.  She was
still in a LOT of pain, but she was over the shock of what had happened
for the most part.  Abby had been up to visit her nearly every day since
she had been admitted.  Sometimes staying for hours on end.  And when
this happened often enough, assistance in the ER became harder and
harder to find.
“So how are you feeling, Luce?”  Abby asked as she looked out the window
at the empty streets of Chicago.  “Not so hot, huh?”
Lucy nodded, as she looked the other way.  “I guess you can say that.
My ankle is still hurting like hell, and I’m sore in places I never even
knew it was possible for a person to have pain.”
Abby gave her a sympathetic look and patted her on the shoulder.
“You’re gonna be okay.  Trust me.  It’ll all work out.”
Lucy nodded as Abby tucked her in and made sure that her IV was okay.
After putting a little more morphine into the IV to help with the pain,
she turned toward the door.  “I’ll come back and check on you later,
okay?”
“Hmm-hmm.”  Lucy replied.  “That sounds good.”
“And you better be asleep, young lady,”  Abby replied with a smile as
she bent down and gave Lucy a hug.
Lucy nodded as she watched Abby leave the room.  It felt good to know
that someone cared about her and would stick by her side no matter
what.  Abby was a very good friend.  And as far as Lucy was concerned,
she was the kind of friend that she needed at the present time.

“I discharged the asthmatic in curtain 5, and I sent the GI bleed up to
surgery with Dr. Benton’s consent.”  Abby replied as she put a chart
down on the desk and attached it to the board.
“Good job, Abby,”  Kerry replied.  “That’s what I like to hear.  How’s
Lucy doing by the way?”
“She says she’ fine, but I think there’s something more than what she’s
telling me.”
“Maybe she doesn’t feel like discussing it right now.  You should try
talking to her a little later.  You are going up to see her after you
take care of your last two patients, aren’t you?”
Abby nodded.
“Good.  She needs a good friend right now.”
Abby smiled to herself as she watched Dr. Weaver leave to take a break.
Lucy had always been very nice and sweet to her, and she was just
returning the favor.
“There’s a double trauma at the back door,”  Luka Kovac replied.
“What’s the ETA?”  Abby asked, jumping to attention.
 “Six minutes out.”

“All right,”  Luka replied.  “On my count.  1, 2, 3 and lift!”
As they lifted the young man onto the gurney, Luka noticed that he was
beginning to bleed out.  He gasped.  “All right, get four units of O-Neg
goin’ and two grams of eppy!  Come on you guys, let’s move!”
“I need something to put pressure on this abdominal wound,”  Jing-Mei
replied urgently as she noticed that the blood was pouring out of the
young man’s abdominal area at top-speed.
“Get about twenty sponges from the supply closet,”  Dr. Greene
ordered.  “And two suction monitors, now!”

Meanwhile, up on the third floor, Lucy was trying desperately to fall
asleep  But it seemed like whatever she did, wouldn’t work to her favor.

Just as she flickered off the light and was about to turn over, she
heard a voice.  “Hey, Luce, are you awake?”
Lucy froze and squinted to see who was at the door.  As she got a
glimpse of the person walking toward her, she breathed a sigh of
relief.  It was only Abby.
“Yeah,”   Lucy replied.  “I’m awake.”
“Well, you shouldn’t be.”  Abby replied with a smile as she took a seat
near Lucy’s bedside.  “You should be fast asleep by now.”
Lucy sighed.  “I know.  It’s just that I can’t seem to be able to shut
my eyes and go to sleep.”
Abby nodded.  “Still thinkin’ about what happened with that psyche
patient of yours?”
Lucy shook her head, trying to not look Abby dead in the eye.
“You can’t fib to me,”  Abby replied.  “I know you too well.”
“It’s just that….”  Lucy replied, her voice trailing off as a couple of
tears ran down her face,  “everytime I shut my eyes, I keep seeing the
attack happening again.  And it feels so real.”
Abby nodded as she put her arm around her friend, and let Lucy lay her
head on her shoulder.  “Shh, it’s okay.  You don’t have to be
embarrassed that you’re still a little scared about what happened.
Nobody expects you to be over it in six or seven days.”
“I know,”  Lucy replied through her tears.  “But it’s just that everyone
keeps asking me if I’m okay, and I couldn’t bring myself to tell them
how unsure and terrified I felt.  The truth is, I don’t  know if I’m
ready to go back to work in three months.  I really don’t.”
“Shh,”  Abby soothed, rocking Lucy back and forth in her arms and
stroking her hair gently.  “Shh, it’s okay, Luce.  It’s normal to feel
scared and unsure after going through major trauma like you just
experienced.  It really is.”
As Lucy tried to calm down, she whispered softly through her tears,  “I
don’t think I can get back in the race.”
“Don’t say that,”  Abby replied firmly.  “Look at me, right now.”
Lucy lifted her head and stared up at Abby.  Eyes stained with tears.
“You are gonna get back in that race, and you are going to be as sharp
as you ever were.  You understand me?”
Lucy nodded as Abby helped her to lie back down.
“And I’m gonna help you do it.”
“Thanks,”  Lucy whispered gratefully as she closed her eyes.  “That
really means a lot.”
“No problem.  Now, you get some rest, okay?”
Lucy nodded as Abby bent down and gave her a small hug and a pat on the
shoulder.
“I’ll come back and check on you later.”
“Okay,”  Lucy whispered as she drifted off to sleep.
Abby nodded as she left the room to help out with the trauma that had
just arrived.
As Lucy let her eyes close, she knew that the road to recovery was going
to be a bumpy one.  She also knew that she would have friends like Abby
and Carter to help though the tough times.  And right at the present
time, it was just what the doctor had ordered.
