It seemed like a month had passed by the time the lawyer called on thursday and told Nick that the results where in and we needed to come into the office.
“Okay, Ms. Johnson, we have the results back. While Alex’s samples where in testing, Mr. McLean was also tested against the sample. It seems that you were correct. Alex is Mr. McLean’s child.” I nodded. It wasn’t a shock to me.
“Okay so what now?”
“Now we have to find as much information on Mr. McLean as we can. I have already started my team on this. Now this could take as long as a week or as short as a few days. But we need to have as much information on him as we can. What we find will determine how we handle this case.” I nodded again and looked at Nick.
“Okay William, be honest with me.” Nick said staring at the lawyer, “How good of a chance does she have right now?”
“Well, Ms. Johnson, do you have a steady job?”
“Yes, I’ve been a history teacher in Orlando City Schools for 5 years.”
“Okay, that is good. Do you have any money or equity saved up?”
“Of course. I have my house, that I own, the land that it is built on, and a trust fund from my grandmother.”
“Okay how much is the trust fund?”
“I’ve never touched it. It was at 50 thousand the last time I checked the interest.”
“Okay, well to be honest, Mr. Carter. She has a good chance. Seeing that she is a responsible adult, she has a very good chance. The biggest problem will be proving to the judge that she can provide the same quality of life to the child as Mr. McLean can.” Nick nodded and looked at me. “Now like I said, I have my team working on pulling up the information on Mr. McLean. When I believe that we have enough information on him I will call you to set you another appointment. I have been informed that Mr. McLean is also asking to have more time with the child.”
“He sees him every day. What more can he ask for?”
“He wants Alex to spend time with him alone.”
“You mean he wants Alex to spend the night with him?” I asked my heart racing.
“Yes.”
“He’s never been away from me for more than 6 hours.”
“I understand your hesitation, but he does have a right to spend this length of time with the child.”
“Well I know that. I’m not saying I will keep him from seeing his child. Since he has known about Alex, I’ve never kept AJ from him.”
“I understand that. But you have to make sure that you seem as if you are willing to do this. It will show the judge that you are willing to work with him. It’s more for show than it is for his rights.” I nodded but didn’t speak.
“When does he want him?” Nick asked the question that I couldn’t force myself to ask.
“This weekend.”
“Okay. Thank you again William and we will be expecting your call.” The lawyer nodded as we left.
“Nick, I can’t do this.” I said to him as we drove toward his house.
“Yes you can. You will be fine. Alex will be okay. You heard what the lawyer said, you have to do this to make a good show for the judge.”
“I know but what if Alex needs me?”
“Then Aj will call. Everything will be fine.” I nodded but I didn’t believe it.
