I guess I'll just take your glasses!

Collecting !

But, it might just work as the motto for some glasses collectors! Don't worry girls! For the most part, these guys aren't going to run up to you on the street and grab your glasses, but they may want to buy them from you when you get a new pair!

My Glasses?  Why?

Well, why does anyone collect anything? Actually, even though I don't collect myself, there are some neat reasons when it comes to glasses. Much like jewelry, glasses are unique and sometimes a work of art. Like snowflakes, no two pairs are quite the same. And then there is the personal part. For a short period, everything you see comes through those lenses. Boy, if glasses could talk!!  I remember back when I was a teen there was one pair I collected. It was my girlfriends. I noticed that one day she was wearing slightly different glasses. I asked her, "What did you do with your old pair?" She said, "I threw them out!" (She was having a fight with her parents who kept buying her the same style, but that's another story.) I was shocked!!  I quickly invited myself over that afternoon to do what I figured was a "Mission Impossible" style search of her house. As it turned out, I didn't have to look far, they were in a waste basket in her bedroom. I quickly slipped them in my pocket and smuggled them home. Several weeks later, after I had told her about my interest, I told her about the glasses. She laughed and told me it was ok just as long as I never brought them back, which was fine with me!

Now, on to professional collectors. Yep, professional. This takes the whole concept one big step further. You old glasses are worth money! This is not about recycling, this is about collecting. The more unusual your glasses are, in general the more they are worth.

Neat frames, unusual prescriptions, and glass lenses (very rare) all make a pair worth more. What you might think of as boring, someone else may find fascinating.  Collectors are quick to remind us that many of these "Charity" glasses donation boxes lead only to the smelting mill, where the frames are rendered for the metals they are made from. (A sacrilege to the collector!) If you are charity minded, you are better off selling the glasses to a collector and donating the money to the charity!

So, before you do what my Ex girlfriend did, and throw out your glasses, Think twice! You may be throwing out money!
