Alice Through the Looking Glass

Eye-dentified! Spacegirl, from Spacegirl.orgCome Hither

For me, it all probably started in the second or third grade. I had a childhood crush on this girl named Pam. We were talking in class and we were both "sent into the hall." This was a kind of punishment you would get in elementary school for being bad. For me, it was life-changing! Pam, was quite myopic. While we continued to chat in the hall, I couldn't help but notice her glasses, it was the first real close look I had gotten. Remember, this is from an 8 year old's perspective. Her lenses made the whole world look different... Tiny ! To me it was like she was seeing the world through some type of kaleidoscope! Boy, she must be lucky! As I grew up, I learned what was really going on, but, too late! I was hooked! I cannot explain why this fascination only occurs with regards to girls with glasses, as compared to all glasses. I wear glasses myself, and find them a bother, yet to this day, the fascination with GWG's continues! To me, a girl without glasses looks downright boring!

In my teens I dated a girl who was as you might figure, nearsighted. This romance lasted into my early twenties before we parted company. It was about a year before I told her about my interest in her glasses, and probably quite a while longer before she believed me! At the time, she was having a huge argument with her parents because she didn't like the glasses style they had chosen for her, but that's another story. As with any teen romance, there were many precious moments that I remember to this day, many to do with glasses. I fondly remember a cold winter walk in the moonlight starry sky. The whole universe was compressed into a sparkling miniature through her lenses. I kissed her, and then took a deep breath and exhaled on her glasses. Instantly, they frosted over! My arm was black and blue for weeks from the knuckle pounding it took!

When she finally realized that I was not putting her on about the glasses, she began to use them as a tease. Whenever we were in public, and I was being too serious, she would start to play with them, knowing that I would not be able to focus on anything else!

Years went by, we parted, and later I married a woman who was 20/20. This was by pure chance, proving that ultimately, the heart rules who you end up with. For me though, the fascination with negative (nearsighted) lenses, and the girls that wear them, will always be part of my life. My wife just shakes her head.
