I Got You

Chapter 48

“NO! MEL!!!!” Nick yelled as he tried to run to her. Mr. Barnes was right there with him.

“Keep them back.” Officer Garner told two officers as they kept Nick and Mr. Barnes behind the police cars.

“THAT’S IT, WE ARE GOING IN!” Officer Garner yelled to the other officers. They surrounded the warehouse and then broke down the door.

Mrs. Barnes fell to the ground sobbing as tears took over her body. Mr. Barnes held her close to him. If he couldn’t be there for his daughter, he was going to be there for his wife.

Jonathon held a shaking Julie as he tried to not lose control of his emotions. He couldn’t lose his best friend; life wouldn’t be the same without Melissa.

Officer Garner entered first, praying he wasn’t going to find Melissa’s dead body. Instead he saw something else, something that scared him more. He saw Melissa holding the gun and pointing it at Adam. He laid on the floor bleeding from his leg. She had a busted lip, some bruises and cuts.

“Melissa, put the gun down. You don’t want to do that.” Officer Garner stated to her.

The other officers formed a line behind Melissa with their guns ready to fire.

“Don’t worry officer, she won’t shoot me. She doesn’t have the guts.” Adam said with that same cocky smile that made Melissa hate him even more.

“That’s where you’re wrong, Adam.” She pulled back on the safety. “After the hell you put my family and me through, I have it in me to shoot you.”

“Melissa, don’t do it. Put the gun down.” Officer Garner said again.

“Do it then Mel. Shoot me, end my reign of terror.”

“Melissa, please put down the gun. He isn’t worth it.” Officer Garner stated stepping closer to her.

“I can’t do that Officer Garner. He has tried to kill my father, Jonathon, and me. I can’t let this asshole get away with that.”

“He won’t Melissa, I promise. Let him rot in prison. Don’t ruin your life over him.” He stood next to her. “Your family, your friends, Nick, they are all outside waiting for you. Give me the gun then go and see your family.”

“Nick.” She whispered as tears started to flow.

“Yes, Nick. He is so worried about you. Go to him, go to your family.”

Melissa closed her eyes and then took a deep breath. She opened her eyes and with her free hand, she wiped away her tears. Slowly she placed the safety back on the gun, but still had the gun pointing at Adam.

“I knew you couldn’t do it.”

“No, I could shoot you Adam. But I won’t stoop to your miserable pathetic level. I want to see you in prison for the rest of your life. And I’m going to be at your trial testifying, making sure you never see the light of day.”

Adam’s cocky smiled faded as he listened to her. She kneeled in front of him.

“Who has the control now Adam?!”

She stood up and then handed the gun to Officer Garner. “I want to see Nick and my family.”

Officer Garner smiled at her and then nodded.

“I’m the one in control!” Adam whispered and then lunged at Melissa.

Officer Garner saw movement out of the corner of his eye and raised his gun firing.

Adam fell to the ground, bleeding from his head. Melissa tried to catch her breath after seeing Adam being shot.

“Not anymore!”

“We have one down. I repeat we have one down, send in paramedics.” Officer Garner replied into his radio. He checked for a pulse and found none. “He’s dead.”

Melissa took deep and slow breaths. It was finally over. Adam was dead. He couldn’t hurt her or her family anymore. She couldn’t catch her breath and she started to feel lightheaded.

“Melissa?” Officer Garner asked, noticing she looked pale.

“Nick, I need Nick.” She said before the world turned black. He quickly grabbed her before she fell.

“Melissa, Melissa, wake up! I need help over here!” He yelled to the paramedics.

“We have one down. I repeat we have one down, send in paramedics.”

Nick heard over the officer’s radio. The paramedics had rushed into the warehouse.

“God, please let Mel be okay. I need her, I need my Angel.” He whispered to himself as he held her necklace in his hands.

Two paramedics came out of the building with a stretcher that was carrying a body bag.

“Oh my god, please don’t be my daughter!” Mrs. Barnes begged. Mr. Barnes held onto his fragile wife, praying the body wasn’t his daughter.

As the body came closer, they realized it was Adam.

“Thank you God!” Mr. Barnes cried. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

Just then Officer Garner came out with two other paramedics.

“She just passed out.” The officer told them.

“She could have internal bleeding by the looks of these bruises, but we won’t know till we get her to the hospital.” A paramedic said as they loaded her into an ambulance.

“MEL!” Nick yelled as he broke past the two officers. He saw her laying on the stretcher and all of his memories from the night she was drugged came back. “Is she okay?”

“She passed out.” Officer Garner told him. “Go with her, she asked for you before she passed out.”

“Thank you.” Nick quickly shook his hand and then got into the ambulance.

They all waited at the hospital while doctors ran tests on Melissa to find out if she had any internal bleeding. Everyone was sitting as Nick walked back and forth.

“I really hate hospital.” Jonathon mumbled to Julie.

“I do too, honey. But it is all over, Adam is dead. He can’t hurt Mel anymore.”

“I hope that true Jules. I really do.” He held her hand.

“Where is the doctor? How long could running some tests take?” Nick asked pacing back and forth.

Mr. and Mrs. Barnes smiled at Nick. They knew how much Nick loved their daughter and his actions right now proved it. He was so worried about her.

“Honey, I think Mel has a new protector in her life.” Mrs. Barnes smiled at her husband.

“I think you are right. He loves our daughter so much; our daughter picked the perfect man for herself.”

“Mr. and Mrs. Barnes, I’m Dr. Williams. I treated your daughter.” He offered his hand to them. They shook his hand.

“How is our daughter?”

“Test results show no sign of internal bleeding. She has a busted lip, two bruised ribs, and she is dehydrated. Besides that she is healthy.”

“How long does she have to stay in the hospital?” Nick asked.

“Not long, I like to get her hydrated again and then I’ll send her home.”

“Can we see her?” Julie asked wanting to see for herself that Melissa was okay.

“Sure, she’s in room 512. Excuse me I have other patients to see.” Dr. Williams disappeared down the hall.

Melissa woke up to someone caressing her cheek. She slowly opened her eyes and smiled once she saw him.

“Hey you.”

“Hey, how are you feeling?” Nick asked sitting on her bed.

Melissa took a deep sigh. “Sore, why how bad do I look?”

“You look beautiful.”

“Well, you are bias Mr. Carter.” Nick laughed and brushed her hair out of her face.

“Really, how are you?” He asked wanting an honest answer.

“Nick, really, I’m okay. Other than being a little uncomfortable, I’m fine.”

“Yeah, I bet having bruised ribs is very uncomfortable.” He watched her move, trying to get comfortable.

“I guess I’ll have to ask Jonathon how he dealt with it.” She once again moved, but this time Nick helped her. Finally in a position that wasn’t unbearable, she focused on him.

“How did you bruise your ribs?”

“I got free and Adam found me. He got angry and I defended myself by hitting him. It only pissed him off more and then he slugged me in my stomach. I guess he had bad aim.” Melissa watched as Nick’s anger grew. She reached for his hand. “Hey, I’m okay. It’s all over, he’s gone. He can’t hurt anyone anymore.”

“I know it’s just the thought of him putting his hands on you. I just get so angry.”

“Nick, I understand, but please don’t let that consume you. He isn’t worth it, focus on something more important.”

He just smiled at her. “I’ll focus on my bride to be.”

“I like that idea. What did you have in mind?”

“How about this?” Nick leaned in and softly kissed her.

“I liked that.”

“Good because there is more to come of that.”

“Hey, I have something of yours.” Nick reached into his pocket and pulled out her necklace.

“My necklace.”

“I had with me ever since I found it on the floor. I promised myself that I would bring you home and place it back around your necklace.”

Melissa leaned forward and Nick placed it around her necklace. “How does it look?”

“Perfect.” He placed his hand on her cheek. Melissa closed her eyes as she leaned into his touch. “I love you Angel.”

“I love you.” Nick kissed her again, but this time a little bit longer. Once they broke apart, they rested against each other foreheads.

“I hear my parents are in town.”

“Yeah, they are downstairs. They wanted me to have some time alone with you.”

“I don’t know why I’m surprised. The doctors told my father not to travel, so what does he do? He gets on a plane.”

“He was worried about you honey.”

“I know, but sometimes he can be so stubborn.”

“Like father, like daughter.”

“Hey, you aren’t the most reasonable person either.” Nick laughed at her comment.

“Are you up for some more visitors?”
