Things I do in the SCA

Being of a sometime crafty bent I picked up a couple of new ones when I joined in the SCA.

Eventing I will go! Updated 10 November, 2008

Illumination and calligraphy
... is the first of these new interests. Aros used to hold regular scriptoriums where those who want to get together and work on their projects. A thoroughly enjoyable time, the scriptorium has plenty of books for inspiration and other materials and paints for all to use. Each piece of work that comes out of there is colour-copied and kept on hand as a record of the (hopefully) good work that comes out of it.

Clothes
One major reason to join the SCA was to get to wear the pretty dresses. I admit it - it's a major reason for a lot of folks! Right now I don't have very many dresses or accessories so I will work on expanding my wardrobe and on my webpage you get to follow along on that endeavor. Aros bi-weekly sewing circle Saturdays are a must for me to attend, having a set time to get things done in helps me enormously and when I remember I bring my camera to document the process of fitting, pattern-drafting, gossip and tea-drinking.

Crafts
The other crafty bits I do are braiding, embroidery and beading. Extremely litle of either so far, but I find embroidery much like illumination, a very relaxing thing to do in small doses.

The SCA
The SCA, short for the Society for Creative Anachronism, is a society for people who like the middle ages. Roughly the SCA deals with the timeframe pre 17th century Western Europe, so it's a little more than just the middle ages. Actually, Western Europe is also modified to say 'and any cultures that pre 17th century Europeans knew about and had contact with'.

The SCA is a worldwide organization, there are people all over who have started local subgroups that are all a part of this wonderful society.

The hierarchy is basically from the worldwide group to the European subgroup which is The Kingdom of Drachenwald. Sweden is organized in a Principality, Nordmark, under the Kingdom and the group I am a member of in Uppsala, is the Shire of Aros.

For more information about what we do, check out any of those links, or take a glance at the SCA Demo website.
