DISCO PARTY

This is a picture by one of my friends, Aimee Alsterda. She created it in a program called Kid Pix Studio Deluxe.

I have many papers that I write for school. Here is one for an upcoming book report:

The book is called My Heart is on the Ground, the diary of Nannie Little Rose. This is Nannie's best friend, Lucy.

Hello! My name is Lucy Pretty Eagle. I came to the Carlisle Indian School, Pennsylvania on March 29th, 1880. I lived on the Sioux reservation. I was picked in a second bunch of Indians to come to this school. My friend, Little Rose, left before me in the first group with her brother.

When I came, the white men had us do everything different. We could not converse in our own languages, so we had to learn the white mans language. There were many kinds of Indians there. The Chippewa, the Cheyenne, and the Sioux are just a few of the many tribes at Carlisle Indian School. The teachers even made us pick new names! I picked Lucy, and Little Rose became Nannie.

When I lived at home on the reservation, I was being taught to fall into trances by Little Rose's grandmother. She has good medicine. I am afraid that the school might think that I have died, because during the trances, I often look like I am not breathing. BUT, I am still alive.

Nannie's father told Nannie to do one brave act, and she figured out that her brave act is caring for me. She never leaves to go on trips. I don't want her to be stuck inside even though she wants to complete her brave act. So, I urged her to go on the trip the school was hosting to see some caverns. It was a three day trip. I wrote her a note before I fell into my trance. I wrote: My friend, if I trance still when you return, do not get big with fear. I go make plea so my brother re-cov-er from sickness. He is much brave. I must be so, too. They will care for me here. Your dear friend always, Pretty Eagle. I fell into a trance the day she was coming home, and that's all I remember.

Epilogue

Lucy Pretty Eagle died on August 14, 1880. She may have still been alive when her teachers buried her. The teachers wrote to her father after she "died" that she had died. Her father responded that she died once before and came back to life. Someone kept violets on her grave until 1983. No one knows who left them.
