Update
on Colorado Fires

June 16th-It seems like a we have a curse, or, at least, a cloud following us wherever we go! We just finished cleaning up from the storms in Wilmette, and now we're visiting my brother in Colorado just in time for a couple of wild fires! We're staying in Evergreen, which is ~15 miles west of Denver. We arrived on Sunday June 11th. Two fires started on June 12th! We actually saw some lightning strikes on Monday, although we're not sure if that was the strike which started the fire. We're staying about 25 miles from the "Hi Meadow" fire, and watched the clouds of smoke billow up the first day. Since then, our hotel has been fully occupied with people displaced by the fire. We've talked to several people from the towns of Connifer and Pine Junction, most of whom didn't know whether their houses would be standing when they were allowed to return. It was amazing to watch the community of Evergreen come together to support their neighbors! The Quality Inn in Evergreen put people up at discount rates, provided donated drinks and snacks for the fire victims, and posted regular notices about how to get information. The stores in Evergreen all had collection barrels for the fire victims, lemonade stands to raise money for the victims, or collection points to donate drinks or other things for the volunteers fighting the fires! It gave us an incredible sense of pride to see so many people helping their neighbors. As of today (Friday), the winds have died down and it's actually raining a bit. We haven't heard a news update today, but the fire near us was 25% contained last night and today's weather can only help the process of containment. Here are a few links to more information:
June 18th Update-Well, we had a half inch of snow yesterday (Friday), which helped the fire fighters contain most of the fire! The cool moist air, along with actual moisture, was more help than all the slurry bombers! |
