o Name: Shaharin A. Sulaiman o Hometown: Ipoh, Perak o Date of Birth: 17 November 1970 o
Born in Johor Bahru and stayed in Singapura until 1973 as father was a Navy. Moved and
grown in Johor Bahru for the next 2 years. In Johor Bahru, stayed at 67A Jalan Padang
Satu, Kg. Melayu, Setulang Baru. Mother got sick and the whole family return to parents'
hometown, the great Ipoh. Had primary education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Cator Avenue. The
went to Anderson School, but just a few months. In July 1983, went to enroll in Maktab
Rendah Sains MARA Terendak, Melaka. Some remarkable memories in this boarding school were
climbing gunung Ledang, hiking from Terendak to Kuala Linggi (scouting days), playing
guitar in a band called Stormbringer and being the best student for Bahasa Malaysia.
Completed study in 1987 with Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia. Got an 8. After school, spent a
month travelling around Kelantan, Kedah, Pulau Pinang and Perlis. Later, at home, wash
cars as a temporary job at a Shell Petrol pump station at Jalan Maxwell. Sponsored by MARA
to do Marine Engineering oversea. So they sent for an intensive english course in Maktab
Sains MARA Kuala Lumpur. Later, taken sponsorship by Petronas, and changed major to
Mechanical Engineering. Studied in Maktab Sains MARA Kuantan under the American Associate
Degree (AAD) for two years. The remaining years of study were spent at Iowa State
University, Ames in the United States. That was between August 1990 until December 1993.
Life in the United States was wonderful with lots of fun. Had travelled to a lot of places
all over the USA, Canada and Mexico. Returned to Malaysia in January 1994. Unforunately
Petronas had no job available at that time. Found job with YTL Corporation. Suddenly
dumped into a construction life.

Joined YTL or Syarikat Pembenaan Yeoh Tiong Lay since June 1994 as an Mechanical &
Electrical (M&E) Engineer. The first six months was some office works, especially
tender biddings, including KLIA, Selangor Medical Centre, Petronas Office in Kota Kinabalu
and Petronas Research Institute in Bangi. January 1995, worked full time at site
constructing the 13 storey Institut Profesional Baitulmal in Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur.
fter completing the first project, was sent to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah for the construction
of the 11 storey Menara Petronas. Had some interesting life in Sabah where the people were
nice and polite. Being stationed in Borneo, took the chance to travel all around Sabah,
Brunei, Sarawak, Kalimantan and Sulawesi. Returned to Peninsular in August 1997 and got
involved in the disasterous Pularek works at Tanjung Pengelih. Yes, YTL was involved,
under Seri Yakin Sdn Bhd, but they were not one of the contractors involved in the damages
reported lately. After the completion of Pularek, the company sent out to Ipoh for the
construction of 25 storey PKNPk Tower at Taman Meru, Jelapang.

Got married while working in Ipoh. Family arranged one, upon request. Wife, Rokiah. A very
nice, sweet and lovely lady. Wedding ceremony was held in Sungai Siput on 13 September
1998, and in Ipoh on the next day. Went for honeymoon to Pangkor Laut, Melaka and Mersing.
A month later, got an offer from Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Tronoh to become a trainee
lecturer. Would have to complete a Master degree program before they could employ as a
lecturer. Officially quit from YTL to join the new academic life. Went to the
University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) to do MSc in Thermal
Power and Fluids Engineering (1999-2000). Returned back to Malaysia to serve as a lecturer in UTP. Currently in Leeds, England since October 2003 for PhD study.
